CentOS 5.3 - OpenJDK vs. Sun JDK
What have people's experiences with CentOS 5.3 and OpenJDK for server
apps (e.g. Tomcat) been so far? Has anyone found they've had to install
the Sun JDK? If so, what was broken?
Thanks,
Sean

Tomcat 4 on Centos 4.1
I use OpenNMS and this is how I install it. So far it's worked every time
(6 installs). Make sure you open up your IPTables as needed. Let me know
how it goes.

Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool
A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and
coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-)
Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending
an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex
things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking
for, but we just want a simple

Migrating away from Nagios
I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time
to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios
endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project.
I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might
work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix?
Anyone have experience in

java
Someone on the opennms mail list just mentioned that RHEL up2date now
provides sun java. Is that a possibility for the Centos repositories?

how to push the bounds and get newer packages for centos 5.4?
i've just started looking after a (virtual) centos 5.4 server that's
hosted at rackspace and, unsurprisingly, it was set up with all the
standard defaults. part of the work i'll be doing involves php and,
as i read it, the standard php version with centos 5.4 is php-5.1.
if i *wanted* to move up to a more recent version (say, php-5.3),
obviously, i'd need to go outside the

another odd centos 4 issue
while in firefox if i use arrow keys in text fields, it acts very oddly.
starting at the beginning of the line it works fine for a few characters
and then jumps to the end of the line. backarrow jumps backwards from the
end of line to within a few chars of the beginning.
anyone else seeing this?

40 second delay on automounts with 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 kernel
after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on
automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to
autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel.
i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has
jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm
not alone

clasificacion support vector machines (package e1071)
Hola a todos,
Estoy iniciandome en R y la verdad es que aun estoy muy muy verde....
Estoy
intentando clasificar unos datos con support vector machines, pero me
da fallo al usar la funcion predict. El código que uso es el siguiente:
calibrate<-read.table("calibration.txt", header=TRUE)
calibrate$calibration<-as.factor(calibrate$calibration)

NMS Opinions
A recent post that mentioned Zabbix inspired me to have a look at them again
while I was waiting on something as it?s been a while since I looked at them.
Currently, I was using Nagios but had to start using Munin to add some functionality
I needed and don?t want to continue down this road of supporting umpteen different
packages.
Between Zabbix, Pandora and HyperIQ, what would anyone familiar

macintosh file clutter on samba filesystems.
I have a client who has a bunch of macs accessing some samba shares, and
they write these ._filename and .DS_STORE files all over the place, he
would perfer it to not write these files at all. Anyone ran into this
issue? what would be the best way to prevent these files from getting
written onto the shares? veto?
