Lightweight MTA for XEN CentOS guests
All,
For a production environment, I'd like to setup CentOS XEN guests as
lightweight as possible. I'd like the XEN guests to be able to send
nightly email as all CentOS servers do, but there is no reason to run
a mail server as the CentOS Dom0 already has an email server running
that can act as an email smart host.
The options that seem most appealing to me are either ssmtp or

Strange XEN on CentOS HWaddr Address Issue
Ran into a strange issue with XEN on CentOS that I think is specific
to CentOS, which is why I'm starting by posting to this list first,
I'll post on the XEN list depending on responses. My sense is this
issue has something to do with how CentOS handles network setup on
first boot of the XEN kernel.
- Installed a brand new CentOS 5.3 server with minimal packages.
- Installed XEN,

SSH slow
Hi All,
All of my systems are running 5.4 x64. The are all AMD x64 processors with at least 2gb of RAM in each.
I am running SSH on a non standard port.
When I SSH into ANY of my systems, I get prompted for my password right away, but after entering, it takes 30+ seconds to get logged in and get a prompt so I can work.
I dont quite know what to look for here
Does anyone have thoughts?

init 6 works inconsistently in XEN
I am using Centos 5.2 as both my XEN host and guests. Both the XEN
host and each XEN guest are up-to-date with the latest CentOS 5.2
updates.
I've noticed over time that sometimes using init 6 (or init 0) in the
guest works flawlessly and other times the guest will reach
"Restarting System"/"System Halted" and hang. When this hang occurs
the only way to finish the

Log Monitoring Recomendation
Given my experience in Linux is limited currently, what do you guys use to monitor logs such as 'messages' on your centos servers? I had a hardware failure that happened in between me manually looking (of course...). I would hope it might have a some features to email critical issues etc...
Thanks!

CentOS 5 Dual Drive Confusion
I performed a test install of CentOS Beta 5 on a system with two ~60
GB drives. When installing CentOS 4 on this system, I normally work
thru setting up Software RAID with identically sized partitions on
each drive.
For my test, the CentOS installer only presented a single drive. I
took the default of letting it do what it wanted. After looking over
the system I have verified that /boot is

logwatch reporting
I just launched a new mailserver that is using dovecot. My previous
mailserver used courier-mail. I am expecting better things with this
new server, but I was use to some login information in logwatch that I
am not seeing now. For example I would get:

FTPS setup problem
Hi!
I'm trying to figure out what's going wrong with a "simple" FTPS setup
and VSFTPD.
I saw references on Google and tried, and tried, and tried... without
success.
I'll start by explaining my situation: I have a WEB development server
behind a firewall. It's currently only for the intranet. We now have
an external company that will have to do a new website

How to tell if I've been hacked?
There is a lot of talk about the vulnerable Linux kernel. I'm simply
wondering the telltale signs if a given system has been hacked?
What, specifically, does a person look for?
Thanks.

SSH question
On my logwatch that I have emailed to me,
I see a line where I'm showed logging in via a known
ip address, and when I log in from my laptop through
my EV-DO card wirelessly, the computer show log in as
ok, but it can not translate the ip from the aircard
and marks the log in as a possible hack attempt.
How do you go in and set a network subnet as a valid
ip block and not an attack attempt?

CentOS 5 Minimal Install
Performing a test install of CentOS 5, I no longer have the capability
of requesting a minimal install as their was in CentOS 4. Is there
any possibility this could added back in before final release?
Thank you,

logwatch customization question
Logwatch is installed, and I am assuming by how empty /etc/logwatch is
that it is running from defaults, which I find in
/usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/services
I want to customize ONE service. dovecot.
Do I copy /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/services/dovecot.conf
to
/etc/logwatch/conf/services
and edit it there,
or do I have to copy ALL default.conf/services/* there and modify

Centos 8 and logwatch
Hello
I am trying to get logwatch working on CentOS 8. System is fully updated.
Usually install minimal version and then add only necessary with yum.
On CentOS 7: install logwatch and get daily logwatch report on mail.
On CentOS 8: install logwatch but no way to get mail.
Am I doing something wrong? Or miss something?
Thanks in advance

CentOS-6 - LogWatch
The Logwatch imapd service script distributed with CentOS-6 does not
generate anything when I run logwatch --service all on a cyrus-imapd
host. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a separate script for
cyrus-imapd or are their configuration options required to get the
existing script to work.
I have found an ancient (2004) logwatch service script for cyrus-imapd
but I was sort of hoping that

CentOS-6 Logwatch 7.3.6 behaviour
After some experimenting I have observed that overriding settings from
/usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf in
/etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf does not produce consistent results.
For example, if I replace the default detail configuration in
etc/logwatch/conf/logwatch.conf with:
Detail = High
It does indeed change the level of detail from the default Low set in

Logwatch and System uptime
CentOS-6.6
Can logwatch be configured to display the system uptime as part of the
reporting prologue? If not then what would be the recommended way of
including this information in a daily logwatch report?
