possible bug in packageVersion()?
Hi,
I received a bug report from a French user who told me there was
something wrong with the function packageVersion(), but
packageDescription() worked well. Below is the session info; I'm not
sure if other French users can reproduce the error message:

LC_COLLATE variable?
Hi,
I'm running my CentOS 7 desktop in french. LANG is set to fr_FR.UTF-8.
In GNOME 3, the menu entries are listed in alphabetical order.
Unfortunately, entries beginning with an accented character (like
"?diteur de texte") appear at the bottom of the list.
I know that in order to correct this, I have to set the LC_COLLATE
variable to fr_FR.UTF-8. What would be a sensible place

Hello colleagues,
I am a novice with R and am stuck with an analysis I am trying to conduct.
Any suggestions or feedback would be very much appreciated.

around the documentation and other online resources and cannot find how I

Dead keys on Wine
Hello,
I use wine (release 20010824) for Lotus Notes R5 and sometimes Winzip. It works
fine with some customizations and in desktop mode instead of managed window
mode.
My problem is that I am French and I cannot use dead keys which is very annoying
with french language.
For example a 'e' with a circumflex accent is usually obtained by typing
successively '^' and 'e'. In

Dear R-users,
Some hours ago I successfully installed R 1.7.1 on my Linux computer
(SuSE 8.1). Now I am trying to get my scripts work which I have written
for R/Windows.
* While with Windows I was able to use the vowels with the accents
present in the Hungarian language:

some upper case letters with accent don't appear in file names
I have a backup server (Linux Debian 3.1) that connects to several Windows
2000 and 2003 servers shares with smbmount 3.0.14a. This is how I mount the
shares:
smbmount "\\\\win2000\\inetpubd" /mnt/win2000/ -o
username=backups,password=mypwd
If I list items with accents, this is a sample of how they appear on the
mounted share:

Correctly displaying different charsets in Gnome-Terminal
Hi,
I'm using CentOS 5.0 with GNOME on almost all my desktops. My system is
in french, so the default charset ($LANG) is fr_FR.UTF-8.
I'm in charge of our public library database server, running Debian
Sarge. It's mainly running a LAMP server with a few extra PHP modules,
and it's hosting our library management software. Since the app refuses
to work correctly with UTF-8, I

Conversion from Centos 5 to Centos 7 & mailx changes
Stephen and Kenneth,
Thank you very much for your help.
I tried 'MAILRC=/dev/nul' which I put in /etc/mail.rc as
'set MAILRC=/dev/null'
But I did not identify that this changed any behavior.
The link below was very helpful Stephen thank you for your kindness in digging this out for
me.

Possible buglet (wart ?) of odfWeave 0.7.6 (with workaround)
Dear List,
I have had problems inserting some (not all !) figures via odfWeave
(using print(someLatticeFunction)...). The figure was correctly
displayed in a R device window but the resulting ODF document displayed
the correct space for the figure and an empty frame with a "broken
image" icon and a "read error" mention.
Exploration of the odf (.odt, in my case) file showed

Having less languages in Firefox (hunspell dictionaries provide too many locales)
Hello,
on CentOS 6, I am routinely writing mails in English, German and
French and using the related hunspell dictionaries for the spelling in
Firefox (I'm using Google Apps).
This works fine but the problem is that languages are added for all
the possible locales (English US, UK, Philippines, Bostwana, Trinidad

Setting a different LANG variable for a single GTK application?
Hi,
I just installed GtkCDLabel, a nifty little app to create CD covers in a matter
of minutes, if not seconds, and which I've been using on a daily basis on
Slackware (previous system).
I've encountered some encoding issues. Whenever my CD text contains french
special characters like ?, ?, ? and ?, the resulting .ps file displays martian
characters instead.
'printenv' shows me

Set LANG on CentOS 6 server
Hi,
I'm having a weird problem on a CentOS 6 server. I installed the machine
in french, so I have LANG=fr_FR.UTF8 defined.
I'd like to define en_US.UTF8, because some output is better readable in
english, like chkconfig --list.
I replaced fr_FR.UTF8 in /etc/sysconfig/i18n and /boot/grub/grub.conf.
Unfortunately, when I reboot the system, I still get this:
# echo $LANG
fr_FR.UTF-8
