LoginEngine vs. LoginGenerator?
I just saw a mention here of LoginEngine, which I hadn''t heard of
before. Last week when I was digging for user-account sample code for
my web-app, I instead found the LoginGenerator and started using that:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/LoginGenerator
Is one of these preferred over the other? From skimming the API docs,
it does seem that LoginEngine has more features,

LoginGenerator - multiple user types...
I have been looking at the LoginGenerator gem. Looks great and can be
easily modified. However in my app I have two places where people can
login, one is for in my case "employees" the other is for "users". They
are seperate tables in my database and have many different fields.
I have an admin area located at ./sysadmin/ where only "employees" can
login, they

Authenticate with an IP address : LoginGenerator
Is there a way to authenticate with an IP address? I''m using the
LoginGenerator, but would like to bypass the "before_filter
:login_required
" if a user is in a correct IP range...
Anyone know of a solution?
Thanks!

State of the Art in Login?
Hi folks,
I''ve got an older project I''ve used LoginGenerator for. It works pretty
well, but lacks password resetting, etc.
Now I''ve got a new project for a client that''s going to need login
capabilities as well. I''ve been looking at the Salted Login Generator
and the Login Engine, and have taken quick stabs at running through the

Authentication & ACL
Hey,
Would you guys recommend just coding your own authentication and ACL system,
or is it best just to use one of acts_as_authenticated, LoginGenerator and
alike. There''s a good example in Rails Recipies and Agile Web Development
with Rails 2nd Edition that I can base it on also.
What would you suggest.... and why?

Beating the authentication horse (dead yet?)
Guys,
I''m frankly overwhelmed by the number of Rails authentication options(?)
out there...from ActiveRBAC to acts_as_authenticated to LoginEngine and
so on...so many options, yet on resource I''ve found really distinguishes
between each.
This is sad, as authentication and user management is really an area
where some Rails simplicity pixie dust could be a real boon to

Question about Salted Hash Login Generator
Hi,
I am using salted hash login generator to create my login page. In the
user_environment.rb file, I saw that there is a comment saying should
NOT include the email field in the changeable user fields array. Does
anyone know why?
> # Add all changeable user fields to this array.

How to restrict access to admin part of the page?
Hi!
What is the easiest way to restrict access to some part of the page?
In php i just put .htaccess and .htpasswd files in /admin folder and it
worked.
Now i''ve got one admin folder for controllers, one for views, public
folder and i''m not really sure if it''s still possible. So what is the
easiest way? I don''t have any user logging features on my site,

Engine Not Starting
I''ve used login_engine successfully before with webrick, and now using a
provider that uses fcgi. login_engine doesn''t seem to start up, in the
development log file, I get only routing errors for the page requested.
The login_engine unit tests pass fine.
My question is if an engine is not loaded, not in a path, etc, how is
this indicated in rails? None of the log files even

How painful is the 1.0 -> 1.1 upgrade going to be?
Does anyone have a sense for how painful the 1.0 -> 1.1 upgrade is
going to be for existing apps? I''m finishing up my first real RoR
application with Rails 1.0. I can live with it staying at that level,
but I really want to use the has_many :through attribute to clean up
some of my code.
I''m not particularly interested in edge Rails, mainly because the

Single id column
Is it true that Rails needs a single column to uniquely identify a row
in table? If yes, doesn''t this limit the database design and disables
the use of Rails for legacy databases?
