C:\WINDOWS\system32 vs ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
I am a new user to Ubuntu and wine, and I need to copy some files from C:\WINDOWS\system32 to my ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32. Ubuntu is my sole OS.
So my question... where in the world do I find the C:\ folder if Ubuntu does not sort directories that way? Also, is there something more than a FAQ, maybe a for-dummies part of the site I can look at to answer questions like this? I've had a

In WineXO, how to change drive_c location?
Hi, people!
Because XO-1 has a little "disk" space, it will be nice if
the location of drive_c can be moved to a SD card.
Here in Uruguay, we do not have root permissions in our XO-1.
We log in as user olpc an can change permissions only in some
directories.
And can create links to files but not hard links to directories.
The SD card is mounted in /media/label_of_sd_card.
I appreciate

Chroot of SCP and SFTP-server
Hi,
I was thinking about the difficulties and complexities of using chroot in
scp or sftp-server, in order to limit the user in which files they can
access.
I've seen a lot of arguments about how it is pointless to try and secure scp
or sftp (also from a logging perspective) because if we allow SSH access,
the user can simply provide their own scp or sftp binary, that does not do

Worms Armageddon: cant open Worms Armageddon folder on fake ../drive_c/Team17/Worms Armageddon
Hi, this is my first attempt at using Wine.
After installing wine I tried to install Worms Armageddon with
wine e:/Install/install.exe
at first I got a lot of....
fixme:ntdll:FILE_GetNtStatus Converting errno 38 to STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
around 50 lines, then the installer appeared and I installed as on
windows except to c:/Team17 rather than program files. I then went

Can't create folders in .wine/drive_c/users/public/App Data/...
OK, so I don't know what's going on. (even with tinyproxy/firehol off the
following occurs).
Unless wine is run by root, when WoW is first loaded and trying to login,
WoW creates a Cache folder and a bunch of folders under cache for login
purposes. The Cache folder exists in: <wine profile
dir>/drive_c/users/Public/Applicatoin data/Blizzard
Entertainment/Battle.net. Now it can

How to fix Wine menu fonts that are too small
I just installed WINE and got it working to some extent, but the menu
and dialog box fonts are too small. See an example at this URL:
http://www.fixaim.com/temp/winecfg.jpg
After searching winehq.org and Google groups and various other places,
the only remedies that have been suggested have not worked.
One suggestion was to copy the fonts found in such places as
/usr/share/fonts/ttf and

Trouble with restricting access and ads
We are migrating old FreeBSD machines to Redhat EL 5.
On FreeBSD, we have previously used "valid users =" with sucess.
"valid users" was never a group, but always a list of user names like:
valid users = david joe henry
Moving to Redhat Enterprise 5, I used the system authentication GUI
to set up Winbind and Kerberos and pam and nsswitch.conf.
We authenticate off AD, and do

dll override basic question
Hi Folks,
I'm new to Wine and have some basic questions that I couldn't find answer to in the FAQ or forums.
Some posts talk about dropping in native dlls into the .wine/.../system32 directory to get apps working, while some posts (and the FAQ) talk about using the wine configuration tool.
In order to properly override a DLL, do I install a copy from an MS-windows installation AND

toolbar button icons appear washed out
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get MetaTrader working and am almost there except for the toolbar buttons showing up incorrectly. They appear white with some light blue features.
I've turned on palette tracing with WINEDEBUG, and ran strace on wine to see if there was any sort of palette data being accessed, but haven't found anything.
Is there a method to discover what is causing this to

How to remove read access to / and my $HOME
Hi,
New wine user here. Installed Wine with IES4Linux and was totally amazed
at how well it worked and how simple it was! Excellent!
The problem I have is I want to restrict IE6 from being able to access my
entire Linux file system and just allow it to access (for instance)
~/.wine/drive_c.
I haven't found out how to do that yet. Is it possible?
More detail: In IE6 under Wine,

Samba + AD Authentication: Restricting access to shares
Because most of our servers are restricted to specific user groups and
the AD domain covers the entire university, I need to find a way to

I want to do something like:

path = /EMdata

wine cannot find L "c:/windows/system32/plugplay.exe
I'm running Wine1.2.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). In my file manager, I can get to the /.wine/drive_c folder, so I know it exists in my file system. However, when I open the Wine Configuration window (either via apps/wine/configuration or via terminal (winecfg), on the Drives tab it shows
C: ../drive_c

drive_c directory on another HDD
Hi there,
I just installed Wine on Ubuntu 10.10, and I'd like to have some information. I have 2 harddrives in my system, a SSD and a normal HDD. Wine is installed on the SSD, but I want my virtual C:\ station to be installed on the HDD. Can I just move these directories (.wine/dosdevices and .wine/drive_c) to my HDD, or do I have to do something with the configuration?
Thanks for the help,

Drive Designation
I keep reading on this list where drive C: is referred to as "~/.wine/drive_c"
but on my system (due to no special smarts on my part that would be
"~/.wine/dosdevices/c:" instead. Why this difference? Are the ones who post
basing their operation on an older way of doing things? The ability to use "c:"
rather than "drive_c" seems nicer IMNSHO. FWIW,

Mechwarrior 2 under wine
Hi folks
I"ve downloaded and installed wine on RedHat 8, kernel 2.4.19 (and 20)
The install for Mechwarrior 2 has run without errors.
When I give it:
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Activision/Mech2/MECH2.EXE
I get an error window saying:
"You must insert the MECHWARRIOR 2 CD into your CD-ROM drive."
Of course, its already there and the drive was mounted with the command
