How to make Rails send a file that is being written
I''m trying to build a simple proxy to Amazon S3 that would allow a
client to request a url that gets mapped to a S3 Object by Rails and
streamed back to the client.
For S3 integration, I use the highly recommended gem AWS::S3
(http://amazon.rubyforge.org/), and to send a file, I simply use the
send_file function.
The concept works BUT the I can''t get the file to be sent as

how to send mp3 inline?
hey all,
I''m trying to do a:
send_file @file, :type => ''audio/mp3'', :disposition => ''inline'' ,:stream=>true
I tried with all browsers and it always asks me to download the file
or open it with a player. Is there a way to make it open in the
embeded player (QT,Windows media player,Mplayer etc)? Only with
konqueror if I open in new tab then I

Safely Allow Embedded Media on User Pages
Hi,
I''m working on allowing users of my website to embed media from places
like YouTube, Flickr, Google Video, Slide.com, etc. into their home
pages, but I wanted to know if anyone had suggestions or links to good
articles about how to make sure the embedded content is cleaned / safe.
One thing that came to mind was to regular expression check against each
type of embedded media.

I put this code block in files_controller.rb
def send_file(path, options = {}) #:doc:
raise MissingFile, "Cannot read file #{path}" unless
File.file?(path) and File.readable?(path)
options[:length] ||= File.size(path)

sysread error in "net" library?
Hi,
I am reading RSS feeds and quite often I get the following error in the
"net" library. Anybody had such error before?
Any info would be very useful?
Thanks, Hari

Connection Reset Exceptions?
Does anyone else get these?
A Errno::ECONNRESET occurred in
facebook#index:
Connection reset by peer /usr/lib64/ruby/1.8/net/protocol.rb:133:in

Today it was on a user.populate call... I am wondering if it makes sense to
catch and retry for this exception.

Ugly patch to openssh-1.2pre15
Hi,
I am behind a firewall which does not permit connections to port 22, so I
run my ssh server on port 23. :-) Unfortunately, the stupid firewall
prints a few lines of junk when you make a connection to port 23 before
actually starting the connection. This confuses ssh.
Attached is an (ugly) patch against openssh-1.2pre15 which makes it ignore
a configurable number of lines while looking for

ActionMailer EOFError (sometimes)
I''m having problems sending emails sometimes using ActionMailer. Looks
like some emails are never sent because something breaks when sending
it. It is a small quantity but can''t even have one drop. Browsing
through the list I saw that one person had the same error as I did but
in his case he couldn''t send any emails and in the end he needed no
authentication at all.

2005 a send_file odyssey (or Rails and Apache don''t always play well)...
Hi,
I''m developing a Rails application that (amongst other things)
lets users download media files. These files range in size
from a few kilobytes up to several gigabytes.
All this development is taking place with Rails 1.0 on a
Solaris host with Ruby 1.8.2 and Rails mode set to
"development".
I''m using the Rails send_file method to send each file with

Strange send_file problem
Or perhaps I am stumbling in newbie fashion (tho I have active_merchant
and a store site basically up and running in development mode - still I
don''t feel I always understand what is going on.)
So, when I have
send_file(filename, :type => ''application/x-zip'')
redirect :action => index
the send_file seems to hang, rather than complete. I''m deducing

HP-UX/AIX sendfile patches.
I have a fix for the sendfile.c code for HP-UX - length not properly
specified prior to call.
I've also added code to support the AIX send_file() function and
configure.in code to check for AIX specific send_file API and sets
AIX_SENDFILE_API if successful.
Could you consider this patch for 3.0.11?
I also sent a web/cgi.c patch for "struct var" last week with respect to

send_file and locking files after download?
Hello,
I''m working on a download service which grants users a one-time-download
access to files. The idea is to write an entry to a database table after
a successful download that "locks" the download link for the user.
After doing some quick tests with send_file I noticed that send_file
does not block until the user has downloaded the full file, but proceeds

send_file doesn't work with Apache?...
Hi,
I''ve been using send_file in my Rails application with
WEBrick happily to send files of various sizes and
kinds.
The same code fails to send anything but a 500 error
when run under Apache, and a log file message
"warning: syswrite for buffered IO".
Looking back through the mailing list archives I see that
there have been send_file bugs in the past. Can some

Deleting files after they are sent via send_file
Hello guys,
I am having the option to download certain folders on my app in zip
format. So every time a user requests one I''m doing a system call to
zip the folder (ex: system(''cd ''+path+'' && zip ...) and then the
send_file method to send it.
What happens is that I''m keeping track of disk space so I need to
delete the zip immediately. I was
