Does anyone have any recommendations for working with zip code distance
ranges? I need to calculate the distances between US zip codes.
Thanks!

YubNub makes Slashdot
Way to go YubNub! It''ll be interesting to see:
1) What so many people have to say and
2) How your rails app holds up to the slashdotting.
Great work!

help cannot put multiple chart Stacked Bar (from PerformanceAnalysis library) in a single plot
Hi
I'm having problems displaying multiple chart.StackedBar from
PerformanceAnalysis library on a single plot. I've tried using
par(mfrow=c(2,1)) but that doesn't work.
If I do it with barplot(), it works fine and I see both plots on a single plot.
> plot(mfrow=c(2,1))
> barplot(blahblah)
> barplot(blahblah)
However if I try to use chart.StackedBar, the second entry

Gruff Stacked Bar order of data
I am making a stacked bar graph in Gruff. Could anyone help me by
telling me how I can change the order in which the data is stacked. No
matter what order I put the data in, I get the same result on the png
picure. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Gruff with PDF::Writer
Hello all
Has anyone managed to embed gruff graphs into a PDF document using
pdf::writer?
The easy way (as far as I can see) would be to just save the gruff graph
as a temporary file then read that file in pdf::writer. I was wondering
if anyone had managed to get them working together directly?

Stacked Area Plot
Hi:
I've searched the archives and the Internet for hours but have yet to find a way to do stacked area plots (like the kind in Excel) in R. I think that polygon may work but it would require a bit of manipulation of my data. I was hoping for an easier way.
An example of what I'm trying to do can be found here:

Thanks,

Using RoR to produce .xhtml files
How can I manipulate RoR to produce an .xhtml file from the view
template(s)? I see how I can use layouts and paritals to efficiently
produce the content and tags that I need, but how can I get the actual
file that''s produced to be named with the .xhtml suffix, (rather than
*.htm, as it currently is)? [Note: I never thought the suffix was all
that important, but evidenly Mozilla

What is has_many :through really buying you over HABTM?
So having just learned how to do has_many :through as opposed to HABTM,
and then, being concerned that I wouldn''t get it to work, I started
thinking about these two approaches.
It seems to me that the _only_ problem that the HM:T (has_many :through)
approach solves that HABTM doesn''t is the issue of the potential
collision of id columns between your join table and one of

OT: US city proximity search
Does anyone know where I might be able to download/purchase a database of US
cities and their longitude/latitude coordinates? I''d like to provide a
search option on a website that allows users to search by city but include
cities in the surrounding area.
Thanks,

How to protect images from public?
Hi,
I''m trying to figure out the best way to protect images uploaded by
users who may wish to keep them private.
For example, if they are uploaded in the default file_column location
(/public/blah/blah/1/) then someone can simply type the URL
http://www.blah.com/blah/blah/1 and get the image.
I can store the images in a non-public directory in the rails app (ie:
/railsapp/images/X/)

gruff send_data
Hi,
for those with experience of Gruff module: suppose I want to send
image from server straight to the browser (as example on gruff web
site):
send_data(g.to_blob,
:disposition => ''inline'',
:type => ''image/png'',
:filename => "gruff.png")
the server seems sending this binary data ok, but I am having

Can''t use Gruff with Rails
Hello list,
I''m having a problem getting Gruff working with Rails on a Windows XP box.
I installed RMagick, then Gruff via the win32 gem, and it seemed to go
OK. From irb, I can do the following
- require ''rubygems'' ##### This returns ''false'', but seems to work OK
- require ''gruff'' ####### Ditto
- g = Gruff::Bar.new
etc., and I get

Time to split the list?
I hope no one gets offended by my asking, but I wonder what others think about the possibility of splitting the list into two or three focal areas. Personally, I think I''d like to see three seperate lists: 1) newbie development (e.g., help working through tutorials, etc.) 2) more advanced development topics, 3) environment setup / admin.. What do you think?
Best regards,
Bill

Help, Gruff is killing me
Hi all,
I hope somebody can help me out here, since the issue has been killing
me for the last three days. Here is the issue:
It seems that gruff kills rails/webrick whenever it''s used on win32. I
installed gruff per instructions and it seems to be working. The
sample controller generates a nice grpah with send_data and all. The
issue started once I try to use any other

TextDrive complaints
Hi all,
I have deployed my Ruby On Rails application on TextDrive.
At first everything seamed to be fine. However, lately, response time of my
application is incredible slow.
Worse, lately there is also a lot of downtime.
I have contacted their support desk, however, they do not respond (at all,
or very, very late).
Has anyone else these experiences with TextDrive?
And if so, what did you do

I''ve come across a confusing problem when attempting to run unit tests

I''m receiving the following error:

This is also confusing because I can''t figure out how the error
appeared. When I revert back to previous revisions,

Gruff gives font-related error
Hello Railslist,
I''m trying to get Gruff running on OSX Tiger (intel) with edge Rails.
I''ve installed ImageMagick, Rmagick, FreeType and all their
dependencies, or so I believe. (I''ve compiled them from source mostly,
following a recent tutorial for Rails and ImageMagick on Intel Macs)
While following the sample on the Gruff downloadpage (the one with the
fruit), Rails
