[PATCH] (with benchmarks) binary patching of paravirt_ops call sites
Hi all,
Sorry for the delay. This implements binary patching of call sites for
interrupt-related paravirt ops, since no-doubt Andi wasn't the only one
to believe this approach is slow.
The benchmarks were done on a UP 3GHz Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM.
2.6.17-rc4 vs 2.6.17-rc4 with CONFIG_PARAVIRT=y vs 2.6.17-rc4
CONFIG_PARAVIRT=y with patch. Summary: with binary patching, the
difference

[patch 0/6] Various cleanups
Hi Andi,
Here's a little batch of cleanups:
- re-enable VDSO when PARAVIRT is enabled
- make the parainstructions symbols match the
other altinstructions naming convention
- add kernel command-line options to disable altinstructions for
smp and pv_ops
Oh, and I'm mailing your noreplacement patch back at you, for no
particularly good reason.

Section mismatch in parainstructions
Is it OK for section .parainstructions to reference
exit.text?
I'm seeing:

[PATCH] x86_64 paravirt_ops port
Hi all,
I've been working on a port of paravirt_ops for the x86_64 architectures
for a couple of days. Here's the result so far. I'm posting it soon for
early cooments. The more, the better.
It's obviously based on the previous work for i386, with the needed
modifications. By now, I'm able to boot a bare metal kernel, but there
are still some known issues, that are in my TODO

- Simplify interfaces
- Put related macros together
- Improve whitespace

[PATCH 11/13] x86/paravirt: Add paravirt alternatives infrastructure
With CONFIG_PARAVIRT, the kernel .text is littered with a bunch of calls
to pv_irq_ops function pointers, like:
callq *0xffffffff81e3a400 (pv_irq_ops.save_fl)
In non-Xen paravirt environments -- including native, KVM, Hyper-V, and
VMware -- the above code gets patched by native_patch() to look like
this instead:
pushfq
pop %rax
nopl 0x0(%rax,%rax,1)
So in most scenarios,

[PATCH v3 04/12] Revert "x86/paravirt: Work around GCC inlining bugs when compiling paravirt ops"
This reverts commit 494b5168f2de009eb80f198f668da374295098dd.
The in-kernel workarounds will be replaced with GCC's new
"asm inline" syntax.

[RFC PATCH 0/3] x86/paravirt: Get rid of paravirt patching
This is a small series getting rid of paravirt patching by switching
completely to alternative patching for the same functionality.
The basic idea is to add the capability to switch from indirect to
direct calls via a special alternative patching option.
This removes _some_ of the paravirt macro maze, but most of it needs
to stay due to the need of hiding the call instructions from the
compiler
