proc:::exit not firing
I have a funny issue whereby when a application exits the proc:::exit probe doesn''t seem to be firing. A customer has written a dtrace script that outputs some info whenever proc:::exit fires but on occasion (random, no pattern in behaviour) dtrace exits without outputting the data. They are running dtrace via ''dtrace -s exit_trace.d -p <pid>'' Can anyone think

Trying to grasp the difference between local variables and instance variables/
Hi: Would it be fair to say (or completely out to lunch) that a local variable is local to a method and an instance variable is local to an object. Thus an instance variable is a sort of limited global variable or super-powered local variable. Its scope is larger than a local but smaller than a global. Or that it is a global within a limited domain (the object). or is it a whole lot

ALERT: Tiresome security hole in "xosview", RedHat5.1?
Hi, I am bemused. After some security auditing on RH5.0, I was curious as to what new suid binaries and daemons shipped with RH5.1. The first one I noticed was "xosview". God knows why it needs to be SUID; it probably doesn''t but the makefile just makes the binary suid by default. Linux has /proc which has enough information that ferreting around in /dev/kmem using root privs

Running MS's "Signtool" app from Wine
Hi, just joined today. I'm wondering, has anyone tried to run MS's "Signtool.exe" under Wine? My boss wants me to investigate doing just that so we don't have to use Windows for our driver signing. I've created a test certificate, etc., and have no troubles signing it in Windows and Cygwin. However, when I try Wine I get an error from Signtool - something about it

link_to file
Hi, This is probably the stupidest question that I''m ever going to ask, but how do I create a link to a file? To be more clear, I simply want to create a link to a file that I am storing in the /public directory, say file.pdf. So, I upload the file to /public/ and then I would like to be able to do something like, link_to( image_tag(''image.jpg''),

BIO-ENV procedure
I've been unable to find a R package that provides the means of performing Clarke & Ainsworth's BIO-ENV procedure or something comparable. Briefly, they describe a method for comparing two separate sample ordinations, one from species data and the second from environmental data. The analysis includes selection of the 'best' subset of environmental variables for explaining

Heckle rake task
Fellow hecklers, Just spent a while getting this working. Turns out heckle will heckle a whole module and sub-modules with one call, so with a bit of string matching, you can build a nice tool to heckle your whole app and report any failures. Was going to post to the list, as the first version was about 4 lines long, but I''ve embellished it slightly (I got carried away), so

New launcher in Gnome
Hi! In Centos 5, when I add a launcher to the desktop, it doesn't allow me to choose an icon for the launcher. After creating it, right-click/properties also has no way to choose an icon. It seems to assign one itself, and the one i get looks like a small terminal window, or something. How can I pick the icon for a desktop launcher myself? My old Centos 4.5 installation allowed me to pick
