Syslinux & DiskonChip 2000 boo error.
Good afternoon. I am trying to make a 32M DiskonChip2000 boot Linux (kernel version 2.2.20) but I'm having difficulty. It begins fine, loading most of the kernel, but halts immediately after the "Freeing unused kernel memory: 52K freed." step. The implication seems to be that my ramdisk is not being mounted/executed properly. My syslinux.cfg file is as follows: timeout=0

svm.formula versus svm.default - different results
Dear community, I'm performing svm-regression with svm at library e1071. As I wrote in another post: "svm e1071 call - different results", I get different results if I use the svm.default rather than the svm.formula, being better the ones at svm.formula I've debugged both options. While debugging the svm.formula, I've seen that when I reach the call: ret <-

barplot fill patterns
Dear R-helpers, I will like to know if there is a way to generate a stacked column graph using both patterns and colors to fill the bars. I have many categories for the number of color available in R, so I will like R to start with solid colors and then use patterns an colors. I have been using barplot and some code that I found in the archives, but I am still having bars with the

the problem of buying and selling
I own a lot to the folks on r-help list, especially arun who answered every of my question and was never wrong. I am disinclined to once again ask this question, since it is more arithmatic than technical. But, having worked 2 days on it, I realized my brain is just not juicy enough.... Here is the problem. Trust not for freedom to the Franks--- They have a king who buys and sells. -

UNC windows path beginning with backslashes: normalizePath bug??
Hi, Back in June I posted the message below, but had no replies. I've made a little progress since then so this is to update anyone interested (!) and to ask for comments. Brief problem statement: Under Windows, some parts of R don't handle UNC paths beginning with backslashes. Specifically a) Sys.glob() fails to find some files breaking (e.g.) Rcmdr plugins

Help! OT: Blackberry IMAP client suggestions/experience needed
The CFO of our college, a most formidable man, had decided to go Blackberry and Something Functional Must Be Done. We've had some users who we've not supported (and things got better for them when we switched from UWIMAP to Dovecot). BB, of course, has their half-baked sorta-IMAP-compliant client (and we do NOT want the BB Enterprise Server) that persistently keeps grabbing the

Samba 3.0 and ETA?
After reading the scattered documentation and FAQs, it appears that a current release 2.2.4 Samba server can not be a BDC. Furthermore, it appears that the Samba PDC does not implement enough of a true Windows PDC to replace a Windows NT PDC as relates to NT client/server security needs. Will 3.0 Samba servers be a drop in replacement for Windows NT domain servers or can this not be

analyzing suvival data using splines (a.k.a., piecewise log-hazard-ratio models)
I'm looking for software that makes plots such as fig 4 (a)-(e), fig 5 anf fig 7 of Gray, Robert, "Flexible Methods for Analyzing Survival Data Using Splines, with Applications to Breast Cancer Prognosis," 1992, J Am Stat Assoc, pp 942-51. In other words, I'm looking for software that takes survival data and a continuous covariate as input and computes a curve giving log hazard

PBX hacked: why hundred of calls to the same number ?
Hi, Someone reported me that from a PBX on which someone gained fraudulent access, he could observe hundreds of calls to the same destination number. For curiosity's sake, I'm wondering why would this happen (dialing the same number over and over) ? Some special numbers generate here and there revenues for callees (and not for callers). Beside sharing interests with the callee that get

Mongrel Now Recommended Setup?
I see that the RubyOnRails.com site has migrated to Mongrel with Apache as a front-end proxy. Is that now the/a recommended setup for Rails apps? We''re still using FCGI but I''m always interested to learn more about other folk''s successful deployment choices. Across all of our sites we''re pumping out about 300k pages per day so anything that saves memory or has
