Rails / ActionPack thread safety
Hi all, Both the rails book (1st Ed) and the docs on the rails site (*and* the Mongrel FAQ) tell me that rails (& ActionPack /ActiveRecord) is not threadsafe. Since I need lots of worker threads in the app I''m working on (details at the end of this mail) this poses quite a problem for me. Is the lack of thread safety a conscious design decision (kind of understandable for rails

Inheritance in helpers? Or should I do it all in a completely diffrent way?
Hi there. In the process of learning Rails I''m displaying data from my model in an HTML table. The view template got really messy so I decided to build a class to tidy things up and help me with the table generation. I started out putting it in the controller. But then I thought that the right place for it (following the MVC pattern and Rails orthodoxy) would be in a view helper. But

Autocompleting InPlaceEditor
Hi, I''ve created some extensions to script.aculo.us InPlaceEditor, allowing the use of either server-driven, or local autocompletion. I''ve also created new helper methods in Rails for this functionality. My question is, is there any interest that I package this and make it available as a plugin, or something like that? Timezone support?
This is a follow-up to the thread ending with: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/vpim-talk/2008/000120.html I too am in search of some ruby parser for icalendar which properly handles timezones on the datetimes in the icalendar RFC. As I understand it there are actually three types of times. 1) UTC times with a string form of yyyymmddThhmmssZ note the trailing Z indicates zulu time aka utc. 2)

rsync for PDAs?
I've been working for the past few months with open-source solutions for syncing Palm PDAs (Coldsync, mostly). I've been becoming increasingly annoyed with Palm's Desktop Link Protocol and the sync mechanism, and am considering replacing it with a third-party application for the Palm. Since I've had good luck with rsync in the past, its seemed an obvious choice. I've

Call popups with Thunderbird (and potentially other PIMs)
Some of you may be interested in a project I've been keeping myself busy with whilst convalescing - or rather, two closely related projects. callPopPy is an incoming call popup notifier written in Python. It's probably most useful to Linux users, but was written to be portable and has been tested on Windows XP. It uses the starPy library to interact with Asterisk's AMI. callPopPy

Vorbis suitable for PDAs?
As Linux is starting to apperar on handhelds the tought of having a portable Vorbis-player is everpresent in my mind. However, one things worries me... A user running linux on his (ipaq?) PDA reported skipping and halted playback using mpeg123. Apparently this was caused by lack of processor resources because mpeg123 was programmed for a FPU-enabled CPU. (Thus performing very poor on a

Speex hardware requirements?
Compared to todays PDAs the GameBoy Advance (GBA) is low spec. it has a 16MHz ARM7tdmi RISC processor. 32-bit but it can handle 16-bit instructions in a mode that resembles "bytecode" (a 32-bit instruction is executed using a 16-bit instruction). I got a feeling that the GBA would need a FPU. For more information on the GBA visit this info page:

Markdown and the hCal microformat
Hi, I've got a suggestion for adding something to Markdown's syntax. I'm new to the list, so I don't know if this is likely to be received well - I'm aware that it's not all that common (yet) to want to do something like this, and I don't know where everyone here stands on if or how to make markup more meaningful. I'd like to generate some microformated

Loading flat-file data into multiple tables
I have a CSV export file with 11 columns that I need to ''split'' into three related tables (some columns go into each table). Departments (have many projects) Projects (have many audiences) Audiences (have many projects) I understand the model relationships, and have those built. I am using FasterCSV for file importing and have that iterating through the CSV rows using a

using ActiveRecord with flat files
For the application I''m working on I would like to not save the uploaded files in the database as I have done previously. It seems more "natural" to simply store them in a directory. Now I''m thinking that it would be nice to be able to take advantage of ActiveRecord anyway - override a couple of methods, so that I can define the associations in the customary way and

Can I set up VMs in a "Flat" network?
Our small network is 10.10.11.0/24, gateway 10.10.11.252. dhcp is set up. I'm using virt-manager to install VM's with kvm-qemu on an F14 host - 10.10.11.100. qemu-kvm-0.13.0-0.6.rc1.fc14.x86_64 libvirt-0.8.3-2.fc14.x86_64 I'd like all the VM's to be on the same network as the physical machines with an address range of 10.10.11.110-10.10.11.130. I have virt-net set up. ifconfig
