string_to_sid: Sid MYDOMAIN\mygroup does not start with 'S-'.
I've been struggling for almost 2 weeks to get Samba working on two new
servers.
When I try to open a Samba share from a Windows 2003 computer, I always
get a logon challenge. I always get the following lot message

string_to_sid: SID @groupname is not in a valid format
Hi all,
I've installed samba (Sernet 3.6.22 on CentOS 6) on a NATed system and now I'm not able to connect or write to my shares.

Wbinfo -Y couldn't work with idmap_rid for BUILTIN groups
Hi,
wbinfo -Y BUILTIN\group can work without idmap_rid in Samba-3.0.14a. But
I'm experiencing wbinfo -Y with idmap_rid failed for SID to GID
conversion of BUILTIN groups.
Since idmap_rid only works in a single domain, and captures workgroup's
domain sid as a real domain sid in rid_idmap_get_domains(), when running
"wbinfo -Y BUILTIN/System Operators", the function

Hyper-V Virtual Machines fail to start on Samba shares
Hello,
I have problem with Samba 4.4.3. I'd like to use SMB 3.02 file shares as
shared storage for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2. I am able to create
Virtual Machine on Samba share using guest access, but when I try to start
VM I'm getting the following error:

How to grant access to file shares by AD groups that have spaces in their name?
Hi,
I hava a Samba4 file server joined to a Samba4 domain.
I made a share for all members of the INFINITY domain 'Domain Users' group to access:
[demoshare]
comment = Test share
path = /usr/local/samba/demoshare
read only = no
valid users = @"INFINITY+Domain Users"
but no group member can access it. Any ideas what is wrong?
It works if I change the group to

certain users can't map home directories
Very odd issue. Transitioning over to a new samba 3.6.9 (from 3.0.33)
server. Majority of the users are ok, but a handful of users cannot map
their home directories from windows7 clients. Logged into XP their homes
map fine. They pass authentication:

Winbind problems

Now I assign a gidNumber.
I'm following this article:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_a_Share_Using_Windows_ACLs
But in "Setting Share Permissions and ACLs", the acces is denied, as the

Winbind Troubles... string_to_sid: Sid S-0-0 is not in a valid format.
Hello!
I posted before, figured I'd try again and provide more information in
the original post. I'm running samba-3.0.22-1.fc5, joined to a W2K3
domain. All features appear to work - I've been running it this way for
a month. This message appears not to actually affect anything, and it
occurs every 30 seconds or so. I'll be happy to post my configs, if
necessary. This set

can I fix this, or stop winbind from logging to syslog?
Thanks!

string_to_sid: SID <username> is not in a valid format
I'm not quite sure why this is happening, I used to be able to connect
perfectly fine to my share. Then I updated and rebooted and now I'm greeted
with this message, and a login prompt where my credentials are never
accepted.

string_to_sid: SID .... is not in a valid format - Any clue?
Hi,
I do get a lot of „string_to_sid: SID .... is not in a valid format“ in our samba 4.6.x Logs. What might be wrong or what might I check. Users can login to the domain and we don’t see any problem on the user / client side …
Thanks for suggestion and hints . Regards . Götz

Access to Windows 2016 server works with IP but not with netbios name
Just for reference, on a working Samba 4.x server in an AD domain I have the following entries
Idmap config *:backend = tdb
Idmap config *:range = 2000-2999
Idmap config MYDOMAIN:backend = ad
Idmap config MYDOMAIN:schema_mode = rfc2307
Idmap config *:range = 1000-1999
I use active directory users and groups to explicitly set the uid and gid numbers (this was to keep everything happy

Samba 4.2 AD member accesible by name but not by IP
Hello,
I have a strange problem with Samba AD member:
It is accessible via \\server or \\server.domain.local
But when I try to access it with its IP address, ex. \\10.15.10.1 I get
access denied error and prompt for user and pass. Entering username and
password with or without DOMAIN\ has no effect.
The server is FreeBSD 10.1. It behaves the same way with Samba 4.1.18
and now with Samba 4.2.2

Group Permissions Not Working
Test 1:
User User1 is a member of group Group1.
Group1 has R-X rights to the shared folder SITES.
When User1 connects to the server over SMB he sees SITES but when he tries to access it he gets access denied.
Logs for the attempt show “chdir (/srv/SITES) failed, reason: Permission denied”
Test 2:
The same user can connect to the server over SSH and access the folder according to the group

Fwd: Client fails to mount with Samba running as daemon. Fine in foreground.
Hi all,
Experiencing a really weird issue on my Samba instance (4.7.5). It is not
allowing users to browse any shares when running as a systemctl daemon, but
it is working fine when running as a foreground service.
Contents of systemctl service unit:
# cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service

Description=Samba SMB Daemon

Samba 4.4.16 %g translation fails for some users
Hi all,
Just migrated users to a samba 4 server on built on Solaris 11 samba pkg. Some users are mapping all required drives (G:, H:, and I:) but some are not able to map them. The affected users user log files indicate that the %g variable is being translated to '-1' instead of the users Unix group.
I would welcome any feedback or suggestions on how to resolve this issue.
