imap + unmounted home disk
dovecot 0.99 still (RHEL4), I'm sorry to say.
The config is for mbox's to live on the user's home disk.
If the user tries to make an imap connection when
his home disk is unmounted, various permission denied
messages are logged, as expected, but then the imap
process seems to hang around instead of aborting.
The result is that eventually the imap process
limit is reached, and even

Question regarding performance of dovecot-1.0.15
Hi,
I have a dovect 1.0.15 on my mailserver and as a Client I use
offlineimap.
Since some time now my mailsynchronisation got slow - I don't know
exactly where the problem is, but I tried to track it down. Usually
the UID-Searches are fast (according to the offlineimap-debugging) but
as soon as it comes to big folders it takes a long time:

Mixing MBOX and Maildir?
Is it possible to have some folders be mbox and some be maildir format?
Why you might ask? Sometime for diagnostics I have the Exim MTA archive
certain messages in MBOX format and then I want to copy them into an
imao folder to look at them with Thunderbird. When I used MBOX all I had
to do was copy the file into a folder and it worked. So what I'd like to
do is have a folder with a

How to debug slow operation
Hello,
I am no programmer at all. I have dovecot set up on two very similar
machines. On one of the boxes, the dovecot server has recently been
showing slower response times. It feels slower. Where it is slower,
dovecot works as an auth server for postfix. I have replaced exim with
postfix on that box and I think since then dovecot started to slow down.
On the other machine the MTA is exim.

Fixes:
- Crashes in non-x86 64bit systems
- Bugs in cache file header caching (you probably should delete all
dovecot.index.cache files to be sure the bug won't haunt you in future)
- FETCH ENVELOPE patch by Chris Wakelin (I'll try to figure out what
to do with the list patch later)
Known bugs left:

extremely slow delete/move operations?
I've been working to migrate several hundered users on to our new mail
servers, which run dovecot 0.99.11 (RHEL4). The problem I'm seeing is that
deleting or moving a message seems to take a very long time. It's not
uncommon for Thundirbird (1.0.7) to have delays of 5-10 seconds to delete a
single message from my Inbox (<500k) and place it in my Trash folder (~100MB

MBOX to MAILDIR conversion
Thinking about going from mbox to maildir. Started with mbox way back
when but thinking about making the conversion. The main reason is that I
use rsync for backups and when these huge mailboxes are touched I have
to copy the whole thing. With maildir I only copy the files that change.
So - my questions is - what's the easiest way to make this happan. I
assume there are conversion

Feature request - umask for index files
I'd like a separate feature for setting umask for index and cache files
differently from email files.
The reason is that I'm putting indexes in a separate location and I need
group create rights in directories. Otherwise what happens is that the
first user creates the directories, but the second user for the domain
that has a different UID gets an error.

Dovecot Version Numbers - Let's drop the Alpha?
I'd like to make a suggestion. Let's drop the Alpha and come out with an
official version 1.0.
Here's my reasons. The 0.9x version are obsolete and people should be
using the 1.0 Alpha versions which seem to me to do everything the
previous versions did and more. It's as full featured and stable as all
other IMAP servers and in my opinion is ready to be called 1.0.

Running the nightly from two days ago.
The Dovecot log shows no errors, but I keep getting login errors for a

Dovecot 1.0-test45 indexing issues
We're currently on dovecot 0.99.10 with a few modifications (including one
very nasty hack for the blank line at the beginning of the mailbox bug).
We're using mbox all around.
Everything works smoothly but we still ocasionally get corrupt mailboxes
and indexes that need to be wiped out.
I setup 1.0-test45 on one of our mailservers to start testing it and ran
into a few issues. The

expire-tool and userdb returned mail location
Hello,
I'm having problems with expire-tool in Dovecot 1.2.6 not finding the
mailboxes. I had
mail_location =
mbox:/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/mails:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/indexes
in dovecot.conf, but that doesn't work with expire-tool. So I commented
that out from dovecot.conf, all the data is in a database anyway. A
userdb lookup returns the following for userid at

subscriptions vs mailboxlist
Is there a way to change the name of the .subscriptions file that
dovecot looks for to .mailboxlist to be compatible with WU-IMAP? It
would be handy for testing and conversion if you had that.
BTW - I'm a new user and your software is very well designed.

1.0alpha1: too many open files
Help...
Dovecot 1.0alpha1 hung up today with nothing working and
the following spewing to my syslog:
pipe() failed: Too many open files
My setup: Solaris 9, just using imap, mbox format. The
various "max" settings in dovecot.conf use the defaults.
Suggestions on what to change in fovecot.conf to keep this
from happening?
