Convert bytes to kb or mb in words
Using File.size(myfile) I can get the size of the uploaded file in _bytes_.
Does anybody know of a function to convert bytes into a more human readable
format?
If I had a wish list for a "file_size_in_words()" function, it would do
this:
10752 bytes becomes "10.5 Kilobytes".
2213814 bytes becomes "2.1 Megabytes".
238 bytes becomes "Less Than 1 Kilobyte".

Mongrel Now Recommended Setup?
I see that the RubyOnRails.com site has migrated to Mongrel with Apache as a
front-end proxy.
Is that now the/a recommended setup for Rails apps? We''re still using FCGI
but I''m always interested to learn more about other folk''s successful
deployment choices.
Across all of our sites we''re pumping out about 300k pages per day so
anything that saves memory or has

MongrelDay Documentation -- Memoirs Of A Web Server
Happy RailsDay!
While everyone else was out having fun with RailsDay I spent my time
wisely and wrote up tons of documentation for Mongrel and cleaned out
some of the docs I''ll never write anyway. I also took the time to apply
some nice patches from Jonas Pfenniger for easily setting up redirects
in Mongrel.
Some of the highlighted documents people will be interested in are:

Rails 2.0.2: Some new defaults and a few fixes
Now that we have the big Rails 2.0 release out the door, it''s a lot
easier to push out smaller updates more frequently. So that''s what
we''re going to do. Rails 2.0.2 contains a bunch of smaller fixes to
various bugs, no show-stopping action, just further polish. But it
also contains a few new defaults:

Markaby Installation Issues
Ok,
So I followed the directions.. I did a ''gem install markaby'' (which sounds
like its enough to get me going for rails), but I wasn''t sure, so I tried to
install the plugin as well.
Plugin installation fails looking for a file:
Script/plugin install http://code.whytheluckystiff.net/svn/markaby/trunk
Outputs this error:
+ ./trunk/svnindex.xsl

starting WEBrick
I''m doing some testing and want to start WEBrick as a daemon on my RHEL 4
server. How can I start this to run as a daemon from the command line so
that I can close my ssh session and leave WEBrick running?
Thanks,

Can someone help with this error?
Hello all,
I get this intermittent error saying OpenURI::HTTPError. At the bottom of
the email is what is reported in my backgroundrb_server_<port>.log file. The
process_netflix_reviews method is parsing (in the background) Netflix''s RSS
feeds. This error also pretty much brings down the BDRb process and to
recover, I am forced to do a
./script/backgroundrb stop

memory issues -- mongrel part of the problem?
Hi. I''m a fairly new mongrel user and have a scenario that I wanted
to run by you all, see if anyone''s synapses connect -- mine def.
aren''t!
I''m running a fairly simple rails app through a mongrel cluster (2
mongrels). This site is consistently sloooow -- memory on the server
is regularly paging (and shouldn''t be). ssh-ing in and running top

ANN: svn_conf generator -- making "svn import" easy and fun
Rails make it easy to start a new application. At the same time, import
a new project into Subversion is not that simple -- there are quite few
files that should be ignored.
I used to manually remove added log files and tmp/cache, tmp/sessions,
tmp/sockets files after the import and then go through the painful
process of setting svn:ignore properties.
There is an easier way -- simply

new mysql gem
Hi everyone,
For those who have/had problems with Webrick not properly closing MySQL
connections, there is a new MySQL gem. (Actually the version was
released some time ago, just nobody took the time to make a gem)
So run "gem update" or just "gem install mysql" to update (not sure if
the latter also updates).
Special thanks to Tobias Luetke, who forwarded the gem to Chad

REST Client
Hello,
I would like to make some REST calls in my rails application which will
then parse the XML results and display them in a view. What I am having a
hard time doing is figuring out how to make the actual REST Call?
I have figured out how to use XMLRPC , but the site only supports REST. Is
there an easy way to initiate the GET/POST REST Calls that I need to make
and analyze the returned
