What is the Ruby Shell and how do i get to it
I am using Ruby 1.84 19 installed on a Windows XP home edition machine.
I am using the pragmatic programmers book "Agile development with

how to access a hash within a hash in ruby?
Simple question:
I know how to access a data field in a hash by doing
hash_name[datafield_name].
But what if the datafield itself is a hash? I tried a couple of
variations but nothing seems to be working and tutorials do not go into
such details.
Is there a simple way or should I create separate instances?

R for web browser
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know of any projects for running an interactive R session within
a web browser?
I'm looking for something similar to the one on the Ruby website
(http://tryruby.org), except for R.
Thanks for your responses in advance!

Linux 2.2 + borken mmap() round 1
The following is just a simple 'if ANON|SHARE is broken, disable
compression'. We don't have time for fancy stuff until we have time for
long term testing.
I have one friend of mine testing this. Can I get a few other people to
test. This is against --current, but maybe work against 3.3p1. Unsure.
BTW.. those on NeXT platform (if you have autoreconf) should also test
this. this

What do I need to learn Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, AJAX?
So I''ve sort of come to the conclusion that if I wanna get stuff done, I
need to either A) Find some dang money and pay people to do it or B) Do
it myself. I''m opting for B. Soooo...now I''ve got some
programming/technologies to learn. I''m self-employed and I can afford to
take a month (or 2) off to totally immerse myself in this and learn how
to do it.

Suggestion for New User
I, like many people, am starting to learn Ruby because of Rails. I am
going through several tutorials and am understanding the concepts
without too much difficulty, but the one area I am having trouble with
is learning the new language.
I am not a trained programmer. Rather, I learned how to program out of
necessity and therefore lack some of the background that many of you
have.
I am

How can I create OrderItems that go in a Order?
I suspect my problem is similar to having an order and wanting to have
order items as part of the order, so I''ll explain the problem in those
more familiar terms and then explain what if anything makes my actual
situation different at the end.
In an Order lets say you have: shipping_address and a shipped bool.
OrderItem has quantity and name
So Order has_many :OrderItems, and OrderItem

Camping on Media Temple?
I''m getting into camping in a big way--I love that you can put
together full-fledged apps with so little code and overhead.
Does anyone know of any documentation about getting Camping apps
running on Media Temple''s GridServer? Of course I''ve found the
Camping server page[1], but I can''t work out how to associate running
camping apps with a (sub)domain

SuperRedCloth inserting <pre><code>
I maintain a web application frozen to version Ruby 1.8.6 and RedCloth 3.0.4
Whenever I insert a newline followed by a white space, SuperRedCloth, wraps the text with <pre><code> tags.
Say for example I write
###############
Hi
This is me
###############
This piece of text gets translated to
<p>Hi</p><pre><code>This is me</code></pre>

hard_breaks issues
Hello,
I''m new to this list, so first of all, many thanks to RedCloth''s
developers, it really helps me in many ruby apps :-)
I post here because I''d like to have a clear view on "hard_breaks"
related issues. I saw old references on the web and on the archives on
this ML, I''d like a fresh view !
It seems that RedCloth 3.0.4 does not handle

OT: any recommendation for scripting language
Right now, I am using SAS and S+/R. As a new year resolution, I am
planning to learn a scripting language.
from statisticians' point of view, which scripting language is worth
to learn, perl, python, or any other recommendation? (Most likely, I
will be learning it in windows.) Since I am not in research, I will
prefer one widely used in industry and related to statistical work.

Export ZFS over NFS ?
I''ve got my first server deployment with ZFS.
Consolidating a pair of other file servers that used to have
a dozen or so NFS exports in /etc/dfs/dfstab similar to;
/export/solaris/images
/export/tools
/export/ws
..... and so on....
For the new server, I have one large zfs pool;
-bash-3.00# df -hl
bigpool 16T 1.5T 15T 10% /export

Problems with UsePrivilegeSeparation (was: port fwd as user != root?
I just upgraded to OpenSSH3.2.3p1 as it seemed that
UsePrivilegeSeparation yes
might help with my problem (connections forwarded
are owned by root instead of the user I logged in as
on the server), but instead, sshd barfs on receiving
a connection. Without UsePrivilegeSeparation
the server works fine.
# strace -o /tmp/sshd.str sshd -d

Look for:
* The new Markaby features.

* The Camping::FastCGI class.

Sorting by two fields
I have a list of TimeSheet objects from an ealier AR query, which I
can sort by the full name of the user like so:
@time_sheet_entries.sort! { |a,b| a.user.full_name <=> b.user.full_name }
I can sort by the started time like so:
@time_sheet_entries.sort! { |a,b| a.start_time <=> b.start_time }
My question is how do I do a sort so that the list is sorted primarily
by user.full_name
