Migrations: only one table per migration file?
Hi all
I have a new migration file created that adds some tables and fills one
with some data:
create_table :sound_styles do |t|
t.column :name, :string, :null => false
end
create_table :show_types do |t|
t.column :name, :string, :null => false
end
create_table :countries do |t|
t.column :name, :string, :null => false
end

Can migrations be used for these cases?
Hi
A newb question.
Can I use migrations if all of the following requirements are imposed at
the same time.
1. Copy data from an old schema to a new schema, the difference in the 2
schemas is about 25%, 3 new tables and 4 new columns.
2. Copy data from Oracle schema to DB2 schema, around 25% difference in
2 schemas as above.
3. Neither old nor the new schema tables have an

Rake migrate and creating join tables
Just wondering if there''s a way to use migrations to generate join
tables (where the table columns comprise only of foreign keys to other
tables, and where the primary key is all the foreign keys taken together).
I made the changes manually in MySQL, then did rake db_schema_dump and
it gave something like this:
create_table "apples_oranges", :id => false, :force

HABTM << producing incorrect insert sql ?
Greetings railsers -
I''m trying to add to a collection through HABTM, but the sql
insert is trying to insert a PK rather than letting mysql produce the
auto_increment''ed PK.

migrations in rails?
Are migrations used only when you''re making changes to a database? Does
it just allow the developer to avoid using raw SQL when working with
databases?

Ruby on Rails & FastCGI 500 Error
I''m getting an error 500 and I''m at my wits end as to what could be
causing it. I''m sure the path to the ruby executable is correct so what
else could be causing it?

rails on Oracle 10g - missing controller ?
I am trying to generate my first scaffold but I am getting a 500 error
from http://127.0.0.1:3000/foo . Below is the information about my
system, as well as the commands I am typing. I have also included the DDL
( Oracle 10g ). I am mid way through chapter 6 of "Agile Web Development
w/ Rails". Why aren''t there any files under app/controllers/ ?

Q: Timing of render :update in an action ?
Hey folks, am hoping someone can set me straight with a solution to an
issue that has come up involving the timing of rendered page elements in
relation to the completion of an action''s execution.
I have an ror search app which searches through two tables consisting of
7,000 page urls and a table w/ 87,000 related keyphrases within those
pages. Search results can take anywhere from 2

Database Triggers?
Hi,
I''m new to RoR and exploring its use with an existing application. One
thing I can''t seem to find much detail on is using database triggers.
All RoR examples and tutorials I''ve seen are very basic saving data back
to a single table. My use case includes a somewhat denormalized DB that
uses triggers to store data in multiple tables on occassion. I

Are migrations executed within a transaction?
Hi all,
Can I safely assume that each migration is excuted within a
transaction, so that''s it''s safe to have migrations executing failing
statements?
Thanks,

Branchable migrations -- A plugin to let you organize your migrations
I just put a new plugin named branchable_migrations on Github.
Branchable migrations lets you separate your migrations into
"branches" (i.e., a director under db/migrate) that each have their
own version. Using the forthcoming UTC timestamped migrations and
this plugin, you can separate migrations by table or feature. Doing
so should alleviate many of the problems that seem to pike up

Legacy association without primary key
I have a legacy database with which I need to interface. There are two
tables that are joined together by two fields, and neither field is the
primary key of its associated table. Is constructing an association
between these tables beyond the capability of Rails?

Strategies for Unit testing 2 databases
Hi,
My application spans 2 (or more) databases for some very specific
reasons... My models are working fine, even dynamically establishing
connections as needed at runtime, and spanning relationships across the
databases (which really impressed me). The problem is, I can''t seem to
force Units for these models (that use a secondary db) to load their
fixtures into and use the

How to run direct DML (insert or update)
I want when the user clicks on a button on the browser
"Perform monthly billing run" the controller to lanch a sql DML

select item, qnt, item*cost as total_cost, timestamp
from services
where service_end_date is null"
How can I run a DML

Rails Migrations and database views
I have a DB2 schema with many ''views'' and table partitions defined in
it. As per our new project requirement we have to support multiple
databases (DB2,Oracle and MYSQL to be specific). The frontend
application is implemented using Ruby on Rails. I am interested in
exploring the possibility of using Rails Migrations to abstract out
the schema to a DB independent layer. I could

Connecting to Oracle (Solaris Sparc 10)
My company''s System-admin installed Ruby and Gems (using Sun Coolstack
package) and I have sudo access to ruby, gem etc. Now I need to get my
app to talk to oracle db (through network).
From what I understand, it requires three steps:
Step 1: Install oracle instant client ( I installed it in my ~/oracle/
instantclient_11_1)
Step2: Install OCI8 libraries (this is where I am stuck). Here is

single transaction migrations
Hi!
It seems that migration doesn''t use single transcation to execute the
needed migrations for the database upgrade, so if I have database at
version 5, and I wrote some migrations 6..10, and error occurs while
executing migration 7, the database stays in state 6?
I also think that migration taks could use some more verbosity, for
example if migration fails, there''s no

Oracle Adapter on Mac OS X?
I had previously gotten Maik Schmidt''s patch for Oracle working, but
now am trying the official Oracle adapter with the latest Rails. I''ve
been trying to get the OCI8 connector to install under OS X, but get
the following error. Has anyone gotten it working?

AMD64 + Debain + rails + Oracle ?
Hi folks,
Does anyone know how to install the OCI8 ruby interface on Debian64
without having to install Oracle?
My understanding, from experience with Debian i386, is that you need
Oracle (specifically the SQLPlus) installed to be able to compile
OCI8. Since my new dev machine is AMD64 running Debian, I''m stuck.
My rails applications need to connect to a remote Oracle 10g, but
cannot
