Mutually exclusive Exim setup instructions
The correct way has to be one or the other:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Exim
are mutually exclusive with
http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DebianStable
It appears that exim can either call dovecot's LDA or make the delivery itself. There may
be good reasons to do it one way or the other.

calling dovecot exported auth from Java
As far as I have been able to figure out, dovecot auth always works over
a Unix domain socket. I believe it is not currently possible to operate
dovecot auth over an Internet domain (TCP) socket. Am I correct?
I want to call dovecot's exported authentication from a Java
application. Java doesn't natively know how to talk to a Unix domain
socket, so there are inconveniences. There

Dove LDA vs Exim LDA
Hello All,
I have built up my email server with exim + dovecot + clamv/spamassasin.
I am using exim as LDA(local delivery agent). I was reading about using
dovecot as LDA but I couldn't find why should I use it?
Now, I am looking expert advice on "Why should I use dovecot LDA" ? Is
there any benefit in terms of functionality or performance ?
Any advice/suggestion/feedbacks

Rule of thumb rule for x/x => 1/1 billing
Hi List,
I am writing some basic LCR (Least Cost Routing) AGI script for Asterisk
written in Perl which I intend to GPL when it's finished and properly
documented.
In order to have a way to compare rates, I'd like to have some 'rule of
thumb' rule - which will be overridable - and which converts, say, a
60/15 rate, or a 30/6 rate into an 'approximate average' 1/1 rate

using local-part delimiters in LDA delivery?
hi all,
i've exim 4.53RC2 + dovecot-cvs on OSX 10.4.2.
i'm working on implementing recipient-delimiters for delivery from exim to a
user's imap store using dovecot's cvs-lda.
reading on the wiki (Jakob's latest comments?):
" ... the part after the delimiter is passed to the lda as an additional
parameter. so dovecot-lda should handle that parameter and leave the

Multi Server Exim/Dovecot and NFS
In reading the Dovecot NFS WIKI entry:
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/NFS
It mentions a FreeBSD NFS client caching bug. I believe that bug only exists pre-8.x ? It seems that a patch in the PR notes was MFC'd and made it into 8.x at some point. (at least I checked the source in 8.3 and it was there). So I assume that FreeBSD 8.x mitigates the issue? Maybe not?
So our deployment is multi

quota only for oungoing

By I want to reject only outgoing messages if quota exceeded.
Is it possible to congi dovecot to not reject incoming messages? I use
dovecot-lda for mail delivery.

exim, LDA, quota
Hi
I configured Exim with dovecot LDA and added quota (dict/mysql).
It works but it seems that dovecot is not reporting situation back to exim
process - it looks like Exim returns OK(accepted) to smtp sender before the
message is actually delivered - if the quota is exceeded then LDA drops the
mail and sends DSN.
Is it possible to change that behavior to report problem immediately (within

Is it possible to use sieve when delivering via pipe to the dovecot deliver command ?
Hello,
I am using Exim with this delivery configuration:
virtual_delivery:
driver = pipe
command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -d $local_part@$domain -f
...
I have enabled manage-sieve and uploaded a simple sieve script that I
can see on the server.
man page of /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver says it supports sieve.
Mail debug is enabled:
$ dovecot -n | grep debug
mail_debug = yes

Memory Experimentation: Rule of Thumb = 10-15 Times the Memory
dear R experts:
I am of course no R experts, but use it regularly. I thought I would
share some experimentation with memory use. I run a linux machine

sieve redirect envelope address problem
Good day!
I have a problem with mail redirection through sieve rules.
I've configured sieve rule that redirects any mail coming to user to gmail mailbox (or whatever external mail system there is).
But when sieve redirects any mail it puts vmail@%dovecot_hostname% into envelope address, gives it to my exim for delivery and gmail rejects my mail because user vmail@%dovecot_hostname% do not

Migration questions...
Hi All,
We are soon to migrate our mail server from one piece of hardware to
another and we would like to take this opportunity to optimize things.
As a result, we would like to replace "uw-imapd" and "qpopper" with
"dovecot". The version we will be installing is 1.1.13-2, as this is
what is available through the latest Debian stable backports. We will
also be using

Size of data vs. needed memory...rule of thumb?
I have been searching all day & most of last night, but can't find any
benchmarking or recommendations regarding R system requirements for very
large (2-5GB) data sets to help guide our hardware configuration. If
anybody has experience with this they're willing to share or could
anybody point me in a direction that might be productive to research, it
would be much appreciated.

Disable maildir indexing and dovecot-uidlist on LMTP/LDA delivery
Hello all,
Is there a way to use LMTP (or LDA) so that maildir index and
dovecot-uidlist are not updated?
My setup is such that mail delivery sees user's maildir as write only. This
setup works well when using postfix for mail delivery, but when I try to
switch to dovecot LMTP the lmtp process wants to read the dovecot-uidlist
and fails on insufficient privileges. Is there a way around this

passing quota to deliver via command line
Is there any way to pass things like "quota=" for the quota plugin to
the deliver LDA via the command line or as an environment variable or
whatever? I've got all the info I need in my MTA to avoid a userdb
lookup in the LDA, but I still have to do the userdb query to get the
per-user quota number (the default quota works fine, of course).
