Migrating from UW: mbx detection and conversion
I want to migrate my big mail folder hierarchy in preparation for converting
from UW-IMAP to Dovecot. I've got a bunch of mbx format folders but some
remain mbox. Has anyone done this? Any scripts out there for automating the
conversion to all-mbox?
I believe the only format conversion available is mailutil (part of UW-IMAP)
and it works by opening an IMAP connection to the server and moving

Questions still about a uw-imap -> dovecot conversion
The more I read about all of this, the more I'm thinking about moving to
maildir format. My switchover this weekend is full of holes due to the
way user's imap folders were laid out. Some had folders in their home
directory and others might have folders in their /home/mail directory.
Some how, Horde/Imp seemed to keep track of it. Dovecot is not doing so
well.

Migrating from uw-imapd to dovecot
We recently switch from up-imapd to dovecot
But many users are reporting that they cannot access certain mail folders.
The log file has:
imap(dws): Sep 14 00:06:19 Error: File isn't in mbox format:
/home/research/dws/mail/TaskDL
The files in the logs are "MBX mail folders", not "ASCII English
text" as are the folders that can be read under Outlook.
Can anyone tell me

Subscription file
Background:
We are a UW-IMAP shop, using mbox format. (!)
We are in the process of upgrading to Dovecot, hopefully to 1.0 proper. :)
One of the modifications we have been using in test versions of Dovecot
involve the move of the user subscription file from:
IMAP-root/.subscriptions
to:
$HOME/.mailboxlist
Rather than having to make changes to Dovecot source code each time a new

Migrating from UW IMAP - pine - Thunderbird - squirrelmail
Hello!
In this email you can find a configuration primer for a Migration from UW
IMAP with pine, Thunderbird and squirrelmail as client. For compatibility
the mbox format is used.
A description for pine with imap acces without entering any password is
also discussed. Please use dovecot 1.0beta1 or later for correct handling
with pine.

MBOX to MAILDIR conversion
Thinking about going from mbox to maildir. Started with mbox way back
when but thinking about making the conversion. The main reason is that I
use rsync for backups and when these huge mailboxes are touched I have
to copy the whole thing. With maildir I only copy the files that change.
So - my questions is - what's the easiest way to make this happan. I
assume there are conversion

Migrating from UW-IMAP
Greetings.
I've got a poorly conceived and implemented system I'm trying to migrate
off of. Right now we've got 20K accounts or so, in mbox form, under
UW-IMAP. Eventually we're going to move to Maildir format, but the
first step is to move to Dovecot on one of our imap servers as a proof
of concept. In other words, all config changes have to take place on
the dovecot

.mailboxlist -> .subscriptions
I've mostly finished a conversion from an old Centos 3 UW-Imap server to
a new Centos 6 dovecot server. I did not copy the old ~/.mailboxlist
file to ~/mail/.subscriptions file, but notice some users have the
latter file now. These are all mbox folders on the old and new server.
I'm getting ready to do the same to another old/new pair of servers and
I'm wondering if there is an

uw-imap to dovecot conversion tool
i plan to switch from uw-imap to dovecot on a couple of medium size
systems and so i have written a conversion tool that understands mbox,
mbx, and mix formats and converts to maildir format while trying to
preserve uid info, keywords, flags, subscriptions, etc. it seems to work
for me now, but i think some feedback might be useful. so if you have
some files to convert and a desire to help,

Wiki relating to subscriptions
On this wiki page http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/UW appears this
information:
"It's possible to keep using the .mailboxlist}} filename (as long as
it's in the same directory) by modifying {{{SUBSCRIPTION_FILE_NAME
define in src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-storage.h"
However, if a user wanted to continue using .mailboxlist wouldn't

uw-imap and gnu-pop3d to dovecot transition/replacement
Hi
I am trying directly to replace old uw-imap + GNU pop3d with Dovecot.
Problems I am having with new (1.0-stable 22.02.2005) are:
- How to get SSL working with new config?
imaps_listen doesn't exist anymore.
cannot add protocol imaps for some reason.
- need to get Dovecot run on another port the test-phase, ie 144 for
imap, 994 for IMAPs
- need to use .mailboxlist (modified the source

Folders compat. problem ?
Hi
A user here has a strange problem when I moved my imap server from
UW-IMAP to Dovecot.
A folder created monthes ago with mozilla mail (windows client) became
suddenly invisible when I stopped UW then started Dovecot.
I really think that IMAP created folders a fully compatibles between
UW and Dovecot but I'm curious to know from where does come this trouble ???
Anyone had experienced the

IMAP Folder paths
Hello,
we like to use dovecot, but our old imapd used to store the paths of the
folder in the file ~/.mailboxlist. This file contains something like
this:
mail/read
mail/dovecot
.netscape/imap/mailbox
.Mail/foo
Each line with a path to one mbox folder. And please pay attention that
there is no path to the inbox, because this is stored on the server...
Is there a way to use this

SquirrelMail 1.4.6 and Dovecot 1.0.beta3 Folders
I migrated from UW IMAP, copied ~/.mailboxlist to ~/mail/.subscritions
When I access SquirrelMail, is sees the folders on the left side.
If I modifiy my folder subscription, they dissappear all but INBOX,
and the .subscriptions file gets deleted.
What am I missing.
Thanks

upgrade from version 1.0.3 to version 1.0.7
Im working on upgrading to dovecot-1.0.7 from version 1.0.3 which I
installed using yum. I backed up my init.d stuff so everything still
works. However, when I shutdown my old dovecot version and start the
new, I get an empty mailbox when logging into mail. My current config
for dovecot.conf on version 1.0.3 has this for my mailbox
location:mail_location = mbox:~/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

Namespaces and subscriptions
I've got a problem with subscriptions in 1.0-stable when migrating from
UW-IMAP.
I've modified the SUBSCRIPTION_FILE_NAME entries as suggested in the
Wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration and included the "~/mail/" etc.
hidden namespaces.
The .mailboxlist files contain entries like "~/mail/somefolder" and the
clients have "~/mail/" set as a prefix.

Mailbox formats
I'm currently using mbox and mbx with UW-IMAP, mbox for space efficiency
and mbx for folders with lots of messages for time efficiency without a
large space cost. I've avoided maildir because it has a relatively high
space cost; mbox has no inter-message cost while maildir wastes on average
half a sector plus an inode for each message.
What other formats are there, and has anyone come

subscriptions vs mailboxlist
Is there a way to change the name of the .subscriptions file that
dovecot looks for to .mailboxlist to be compatible with WU-IMAP? It
would be handy for testing and conversion if you had that.
BTW - I'm a new user and your software is very well designed.

folder subscriptions
Hi,
I've got a lot of users using uw-imapd(yah, yah, I know)
I'd like to get them off of that and onto dovecot at some point in the
indeterminate future.
so excluding bizarre path resolution things that uw-imapd has left
around. is it more or less cp ~/mailboxlist ~/mail/subscriptions?
It looks like that - but I wanted to verify :)
thanks
