mbox vs. maildir storage block waste
Hi.
I recently mentioned in several posts, that I'd tended to use mbox
rather than maildir, because you don't loose so much space (due to
always allocating full blocks per maildir file and thus per mail).
I made some tests of my archive, which consists of some 3,4 million
mails at a total of 42GB). Most of these mails are probably normal
sized, but there are also some with bigger

Modified Cups Backed pdf writer to keep the original document name.
Hi All,
I've got a samba/cups pdf writer going thanks to PeteFwee and Wolfram Q and
a few others... the cups pdf backed i used has a default of
username-date.pdf which I didn't like and wanted the name of the job that
got send in the printer q on the winslows client.
The only way I could see in my very limited experience was to grab the
%%Title out of the postscript file and make sure

Maildirmake equiv?
Since I am using dovecot I do not have courier installed, but Courier had a very handy tool for making maildir folders called `maildirmake` which I used in some automated backup scripts. How do I duplicate maildirmake in dovecot?
for example:
#!/bin/bash
# v1.2a Testing for new dovecot install
# Archive mail from folders without [0-9]{4} Maildirs
# after they are 21 days old to a yearly folder

restoring mails and directories
Good day!
is there an easy way to restore e.g. deleted mails and/or mail directories?
let me specify: I'm running dovecot 1.2.9 on a current ubuntu lts. It is set to Maildir and I backup the folder with the users maildata nightly via rsync.
now, when someone deletes a mail that they still need, and I copy it back from the backup, it will not be visible to mail clients. When I change the

fchown() failed
Hello all,
I'm not sure if this question is better posed to a Fedora group because
I have only had this problem since I upgraded from F9 to F11, but I
figured that the specialised knowledge here might help me more...
I have been getting these entries in syslog since upgrading. Today for
instance I got:

POP does not seem to be working
OK, I am brand new to this so please bear with me.
I have an FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE system. Postfix is installed with qpopper.
The mailboxes are standard mbox format.
I just installed Dovecot. At some point I want to update to a mdir
format, etc., but quite frankly I do not know how to go about that. In
any case, I shut down qpopper and started Dovecot. I modified the

XUIDL Migration problems
Hello All,
I am new to Dovecot and the Dovecot mailing list.
I am trying to migrate an existing Exim + qpopper - mbox (pop3 only) installation over to Exim + Dovecot using mdir (pop3 and imap)
And am running into problems with preserving the XUIDL headers.
I am running Dovecot 2.0.14
I have used the mb2md.pl script : http://dovecot.org/tools/mb2md.pl from this page

Dovecot chgrp actions on new files/folders
Timo,
I did further study of the user/group permissions. Applying the below
patch will make no difference to virtually everyone out there. Those
that have default uid/gid ownership won't see any change as the gid
already matches so the fchown() action won't be attempted. Those that
have sgid will still see the normal expected fchown() enforced by the
kernel which becomes a duplicated

webmaster in mqueue
Anybody finding a huge mailfile named webmaster in their mqueue? I'm
wondering what/how this gets there? Just found one on one server that
was over 2 gigs! Yuck!!!
So far, this has been on CentOS 3 machines using sendmail.
Best,

new user questions
Greetings;
Trying to follow along with the wiki2 setup instructions and thought I'd
hit a snag with the first "send me a mail" snippet as it took several
minutes to arrive, so I assume that somehow procmail was involved in the
delivery and my procmail runs mail thought a whole bunch of checks before
finally handing it off to a mailfile as /var/mail/gene.
Then the next script

dovecot-shared tries to fchown index+control files but fails
I have some public mailboxes setup in 1.0.0,
location =
maildir:/egr/mail/shared/org:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/dovecot/public/control/org:INDEX=%h/Maildir/dovecot/public/indexes/org
I also have a dovecot-shared file in the maildir folders so messages that are added
to the inbox get a decent set of default permissions. However, I think dovecot is also trying
to fchown the index files (stored in a user

Feature request for maildir style boxes
greetings,
i'd like to ask for a certain feature request.
dovecot:maildir_uidlist_recreate() to set the gid of new files based on
the parent directory group ownership and normally that's desired, an
appropriate security method. on our server, we use directory
permissions to more stringently isolate access between users and
services. we have three group ids used for this, and i'll

"dovecot virgin": 1st questions ...

"uncle"! i've thrown up my hands with cyrus, and am looking for a 'better
alternative' ...
i'm brand new to dovecot (haven't even built it yet ...), and have spent the
last while reading through the LIST archives here.
apart from the TECHNICAL aspects, which seem _more_ than adequate/competitive,

POP3 Performance
Hi,
We actually have a mail hosting solutions with aprox. 100 thousand
of email account, where about 90% of a customers use POP3 like email
configuration. About a few mounths (we perfomed a lot of migration
throught mbox email software to Maildir with dovecot) but i can see that
the performance is very poor and receive complaint about delays of
autentications of accounts.

Unable to (un)subscribe mbox with AIX, NFS and netapp filer
Hi Timo,
dovecot 1.2.0 is great! Faster and more stable on mboxes that 1.1.x by
far... good job :-)
Today I stumbled over a strange problem when I tried to subscribe an
existing Mailbox (mbox), which doesn't work.

"fchown() failed with file" and Operation not permitted with indexes
Dear all,
Getting lots of these errors in our maillog with the INDEX changed:
dovecot: IMAP(ghenry): fchown() failed with file
/home/ghenry/Maildir/index/.INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp: Operation not
permitted
For .log and .cache as well.
We have:
location =
maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/control:INDEX=%h/Maildir/index
I looked in safe-mkdir.c and saw:
fchown() failed for (line 42)
