Optimal File Permissions for Shared Access Between Windows and Linux
Hi Rowland,
Thank you for your feedback. I apologize for not including the global
section in my previous message. Here it is:
[global]
?? min protocol = SMB3
?? workgroup = WORKGROUP
As you can see, there isn?t much in the global section.
To answer your question about the permissions on |/mnt/shared|, here are
the settings:
drwxrwxr-x 30 john_johnk sharedaccess 4096 Oct 15 23:42 shared

I thought with the ACL it would be easier but it is the same nightmare :-(
john_johnk at raspberrypi:~ $ getfacl /mnt/shared/partage_de_fichiers
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: mnt/shared/partage_de_fichiers
# owner: john_johnk

Optimal File Permissions for Shared Access Between Windows and Linux
Hi Rowland,
Thanks to your guidance, I?ve set up permissions for all directories and
files under |/mnt/shared| as follows:
* *Directories* have ```|drwxr-xr-x| permissions and are owned by
|root:root|.```
* *Files* are set to ```|rw-------|, also with |root:root```|
ownership, except for executables, which have the necessary |rwx|
permissions.
I?d like to ensure

Optimal File Permissions for Shared Access Between Windows and Linux
Rowland,
I realized I forgot to mention a few details about specific folders with unique permissions in /mnt/shared that I need to preserve in /mnt/shared/nas:
1. /mnt/shared/video_surveillance: Originally, this folder had drwxrwx--- permissions, with reolink as the owner and surveillance as the group. However, since the surveillance group has been removed, only john_johnk and reolink need

Extended attributes not working on mac
I worked with Netatalk for years and want to switch to Samba now. Currently i use Ubuntu 20.04. and Debian 9 before, i had no issues with netatalk at all.
As soon as i try to add a color tag (e.g. yellow) with Mac OS 10.15.5, the tag appears shortly but hides one second later. The file system is ZFS with no special options configured.
I tried the Ubuntu package but also the builds from source

Extended attributes not working on mac
I?m not sure if this is related, but there was a regression a while back in handling resource forks in folder icons. It was supposed to be fixed in 4.10.13 but I don?t think it quite works yet and I haven?t had the time to test it further yet.

issues with Time Machine - did macOS change how they handle things?
TL;DR: Time Machine cannot create a *new* backup on my shared drive, but can add to an *existing* backup.
I'm running macOS Catalina and my Time Machine backs up to a Debian 10 server with NetAtalk and Avahi. Since Mavericks macOS has preferred SMB, and given SMB is marginally faster I decided to switch to using SMB for the Time Machine shares. On a fresh AFP share I can start a new Time

check_account: Failed to find local account with UID" issue / The university of Chicago
Hi Experts,
We encountered a weird issue after restarting the server. Seems everything working fine on the configuration side but the user?s not able to authenticate with the Samba server. Can you please help to investigate the issue?
Our setup details and configuration file + error logs + service status.
Samba:- 4.18.3-0
CentOS Linux release 8.4.2105
Authentication mechanism is SSSD

Extended attributes not working on mac
I changed the configuration and raised the log level, in my opion samba tries to access the non existent double files.
Samba is now probably writing the data in a netatalk compliant way in the extended attributes of the file but is not reading it.
new configuration:
[Global]
min protocol = SMB2
vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr
fruit:metadata = stream
fruit:resource = stream

Duplicate entry in macOS "Network" when using Samba 4.9.1 and avahi 0.7
Hi.
I configured a simple samba server. As I need this server to be available in macOS ?Network? list, I configured avahi.
When I start smb.service and avahi-daemon.service I get two results in the ?Network? section.
When I don?t use avahi I get no entry.
Why are there two entries and which best practice can I use to have only one entry?
Thanks!

OS X client symlinks
When you say “real symlinks on OSX” do you mean an “alias” that Finder would create? Or a Unix-type symlink using the “ ln -s file link” command in Terminal? A Finder alias is not the same as a Unix-type symlink.
My NAS runs Debian Linux with version 4.3.11 of smbd; my clients are all OSX Mojave.
If I create an alias using Finder on the NAS, it behaves like a normal alias in OSX UNLESS I move

Samba Issue for Mac
We are using the nss-db instead of SSSD on the Samba server.
The backend database is nss.
idmap config adlocal : backend = nss
Our issue is related to user directory discrepancy on the Mac OS systems. On the windows systems, we don?t see any issue.

Read-only permissions - incorrect user mapping?
I have a problem regarding permissions of a SMB share.
I created a share for my user ?steven? which has correct unix permissions (I have read/write access to this folder when I log in to the server via ?steven?)
drwxr-xr-x steven root share
When I export this share with no ?force user? entry in smb.conf I can access the share only read only.
When I use ?force user = steven? it?s the same.

Samba, Kerberos, Autofs: Shares get disconnected
Dear Rowland
of course, if the network is unreachable, this is also a problem for
autofs. However, when a CIFS share is in the fstab and the network is
unreachable, you cannot boot, as it waits forever to mount all your fstab
entries, whereas with autofs, you can still boot, as there is nothing
really mounted yet.
I show you below my configurations of the server and client machines.

vfs fruit disk_free fails on tmsize overflow with macOS Time Machine
Hi
I apt installed Samba Version 4.9.5-Debian (latest in their repos) on a fresh-built Raspbian Buster Lite release 2020-02-05. I put together the configuration outlined below by using the docs at https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X and https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/current/man-html/vfs_fruit.8.html. The underlying usb hard drive is an ext4 partition
