problem restarting mongrel_cluster outside RAILS_ROOT - patch and other option
Hey folks. Sorry for the SUPER long email but if you''ve been
experiencing the same problems with restarting your mongrel cluster with
Capistrano, then I have two solutions that have worked for me and I''m
pretty sure will for you as well.
THE PROBLEM
I was having trouble restarting my clusters using Capistrano. I''ve seen
this come up before on the mailing list and

Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi.
I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 -
things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are
uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice
status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I
tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via
Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,

Getting /etc/mongrel_cluster and startup script to work?
Hi,
I''m trying to setup my mongrel clusters to start on boot. I have
followed the instructions under the "On Boot Initialization Setup"
section at http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/mongrel_cluster.html.
When I try to start it up, I get the following error:
me at mybox.com: sudo /etc/init.d/mongrel_cluster start

Log problem on stop/restart
I''m using the mongrel_cluster recipes for Capistrano as laid out by
codahale.com and the new ed. of the Agile Development book, but I''m
having problems on restart and stop:
I can start:
[root current]# mongrel_rails cluster::start
Starting 3 Mongrel servers...
And I can see 3 processes running:
[root current]# ps aux | grep mongrel

cluster::restart doesn''t wait for stop before starting
Hi,
I''m calling restart from my Capistrano task. I have this in my deploy.rb file:
# until mongrel_cluster updates to cap2...
namespace :deploy do
task :start, :roles => :app do start_mongrel_cluster end
task :stop, :roles => :app do stop_mongrel_cluster end
task :restart, :roles => :app do restart_mongrel_cluster end

mongrel_cluster-0.1.1: the bird dog (capistrano support!)
Hey y''all:
mongrel_cluster provides management tools for running Mongrel behind
a reverse-proxy/load balancer. It is an extraction from Rails
Machine, a deployment service and Ruby library that simplifies Rails
application deployment. This release fixes bugs and adds a Capistrano
task library.
Changes:
-changed pid file format to include port
-only write configuration options

mongrel_cluster 0.1: easy mongrel clustering
Hi y''all;
A quick note to announce the release of mongrel_cluster, a gem_plugin
for Mongrel. This plugin provides commands for managing multiple
Mongrel processes behind a reverse-proxy server and load balancer.
To install:
gem install mongrel_cluster
Configure (use -h to options):
mongrel_rails cluster::configure
Start:
mongrel_rails cluster::start

Mongrel Cluster 0.2.1 prerelease
Hi Y''all,
Just a quick note announce an update to mongrel_cluster.
Changes:
- ''mongrel_rails cluster::restart'' now calls ''mongrel_rails stop'' and
''mongrel_rails start''. ''cluster::restart'' now accepts the ''force''
argument instead of ''soft''.
- Added ''.conf'' as

mongrel_rails cluster::start problem with multiple runs?
mongrel_rails cluster::start doesn''t seem to pay attention to whether or not
the processes exist or not. If you run it twice, the first set of processes
are created, then then second run will overwrite the log/{pidfiles} files
with the new process numbers. Problem is that the second group of processes
are gone, since the first ones had the port open.
I''d think that the right

mongrel_rails not starting
Hi,
Im a newbie to ruby and rails. I installed mongrel using the command:
sudo gem install mongrel --include-dependencies
When i try to start mongrel with
mongrel_rails start -d, its throwing the same error as it did to you:
/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:32:in

Not all mongrel starting (Errno:EEXIST)
I''m playing with the mongrel clustering, and am having a problem getting 2
mongrels to start up reliably.
This should be a pretty simple cluster, with just 2 instances running. My
mongrel config (mongrel_cluster.yml) looks like:
cwd: /deployment/installed/myapp/current
log_file: log/mongrel.log
port: "8000"
environment: production
address: 127.0.0.1

mongrel_rails start working mongrel_rails
Thanks Bill for the answer !
In fact, my application is working well with webrick and also with a
single mongrel instance lunched via
the command : mongrel_rails start
When I check what is the difference in the gem loaded in both cases
(mongrel_rails start and
mongrel_rails cluster::start) it seems that mongrel_rails
cluster::start does not load all the gems that the first command is
loading.

Cluster restart leaving orphaned processes?
First off, a big thank you to Zed and the development team for
mongrel and mongrel cluster. I''ve deployed it for two apps (through
an apache 2.2 proxy) and it''s amazing how much snappier everything
is. Previously we were using lighttpd and lighttpd-fastcgi proxying
through apache 2.0, which was turning into a hassle for lots of
reasons, most notably the ruby fcgi

capistrano+mongrel struggles
Hello,
I am trying to deploy on to OS X Server with capistrano+mongrel+apache2,
etc.
I''m trying to do a "cap cold_deploy" as recommended here:
http://blog.codahale.com/2006/06/19/time-for-a-grown-up-server-rails-mongrel-apache-capistrano-and-you/
I had a devil of a time getting cap to find the mongrel_rails command
(which is in /opt/local/bin) on the server. I set the

mongrel cluster issues, plain old mongrel OK
I just created a test rails app, and am having very wierd issues with
mongrel cluster. Here''s what I''m doing:
rails test
sudo chown -R mongrel:mongrel test
cd test
sudo mongrel_rails \
cluster::configure -e production \
-p 8000 -N 3 -a 127.0.0.1 --user mongrel \
--group mongrel
It correctly writes the mongrel_cluster.yml file to the config
directory. Now,

mongrel_cluster 0.2.2 - plugin cluster::status does not exist?
Hello all. I''ve recently installed the 0.2.2 pre-release of
mongrel_cluster to try out the new --clean option. However, after
installing, when I give a simple "mongrel_rails" command, the
cluster::status command is not listed. The error I receive when I do
try and run the full "mongrel_rails cluster::status" is...
