I just switched in a hurry one of our mailbox servers from UW-imapd to Dovecot in an attempt to address performance and stability problems. This server hosts ~5500 accounts, ~2000 are daily used, ~600 simultaneous IMAP connexions in rush hours, and lots of POP ones. Some accounts may be accessed simultaneously with IMAP and POP. The system is : - Debian Sarge (x86 with amd64 kernel) - MBOX files

I have understood correctly when thinking that all I need to do in order to restore mails, is to just copy the old maildir folder to the location where mail_location is pointing to and dovecot will find all the mails and display the old mails? mail_extra_groups=mail setting is often used insecurely to give Dovecot access to create dotlocks to /var/mail directory. If you don't use mboxes in /var/mail, make sure this setting is cleared. If you do use /var/mail mboxes and Dovecot gives permission errors without it, do one of the following (in the preferred order): a) Upgrade to v1.0.11 and use the new mail_privileged_group setting

When I install an SSL certificate, I can't find a config option to set configure the Server Certificate Chain file... Is this not possible or can I do it another way? I am setting up a new Dovecot server and I want to start from scratch, i.e. with an empty mailbox. But I want to have the same folders in my new mailbox that I have in my old. The server I am running Dovecot on is still using locale = ISO-8859-1 but I am thinking it is time to convert to UTF-8... Can I just use convmv to convert all the files in the mailboxes to UTF-8 or is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to run iconv to convert the content also or does dovecot/MUA fix this by it self? (i.e. they display the mail as encoded in ISO-8859-1) Regards, BTJ
