dovecot 1.0, namespace & mbox
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
i try to use a new namespace with mbox parallel to my working maildir
configuration.
With this i have a few interesting effects:
- - dovecot doesn't use the CONTROL statement and generate a
.subscriptions file at the namespace directory. The INDEX statement is used.
- - dovecot can work with subdirectories even mbox is used
- - I

mbox to maildir conversion - good idea regarding Outlook?
Hi list,
first of all, many thanks to the Dovecot authors for supplying an IMAP
server that works well with M$-Outlook! I have used UW-imapd for quite a
while and was annoyed by frequent "imap...timeout..." error messages.
Now I'd like to give maildir format a try because I want to use email
sub-folders. What are other Outlook users' experiences with maildir? Is
it as

What about saving your INBOX at ~/mbox ?
Hi, folks. I'm testing out RedHat's "Fedora Core 2" release, which has
switched from the old WashU imapd to dovecot-0.99.10. Overall, this
looks like a really, really good move on their part: it looks like a
very sweet little tool without some of the ingrained idiocy of Mark
Crispin insisting that every home directory consist of nothing but
mbox files and allowing you to use a

invalid mbox
dovecot-1.0-1.1.rc15.fc6
When I attempt to drag spam from one IMAP box to another it tells me
that I have an invalid mbox format for some emails. Occasionally too
when I click on that email box it gives me the same error. uw-imapd
never gave me those problems.
I use Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 and have the same problem on Windoze XP and
MacOSX.
Can I and how do I solve this problem?

mbox slowness in dovecot-1.0-test61
Hi,
We're trying out Dovecot to see if it's a good replacement for UW-imapd.
It seems to be very slow in opening an mbox file, even after it's been
indexed. (I mean way slower than UW)
Here's some info on the system:
Dovecot-1.0-test61
SuSE 8.1, Linux kernel 2.4
Using NFS to access mail.
I've tried turning off mmap, using dotlocking, using fcntl locking

Maildir/mbox on a per-user basis
Hello,
The Wiki indicates that Dovecot can do either mbox or Maildir on a
per-user basis:
default_mail_env can be overridden in userdb for each user. This works
with userdbs supporting the "mail" attribute (eg. passwd-file, SQL,
LDAP).
How exactly does one do this for passwd-file?
Thanks,

maildir and /var/spool/mail/$USER
I was told to use dovecot because it was easier than cyrus. I just
upgraded from fc1 to fc3. I am not sure what fc1 used but I think it was
cyrus and it worked perfect out of the box no configurations to do. The
new cyrus-imapd is not so simple so I got dovecot. I see examples saying
to use mbox=~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u but when I try that I
cannot map mail folders that reside

Cyrus MailDir to Dovecot mbox
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Anyone out there know of a tool that can convert a Cyrus MailDir format
to Dovecot mbox? I have a user that I need to move over from a mail
server running cyrus using MailDir format. At first I told him to setup
second account with Thunderbird to our mail server and then use
Thunderbird to move the messages over. But he has over 100K messages so

Migration from pop3 to imapd
Dear list,
I am planing to set up dovecot-imapd on my production-mail server
which currently only runs pop3 via qpopper on debian-sarge.
It would be best, if I could only use imapd and use the existing pop3-
server (qpopper) as it is.
Is this possible?
Can the user both use pop3 (qpopper) and imapd (dovecot) in
parallel then?
Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails? Does it store its mail in

mbox/maildir mixed setup with system/virtual mixed users
Hello Everyone,
I'm using dovecot 1.0.7 (not sure how relevant it is though)
configured to handle both sytem users and virtual users.
The system users are handled by default (PAM), while the virtual
users are handled pretty much like this:
passdb passwd-file {
args = /var/spool/vmail/%d/auth/%n
}
...And mailbox and folder location settings:
userdb static {

Setting up mixed mbox and maildir
I'm trying to set up a dovecot server for which mail arrives in an mbox,
and mail is stored in a maildir. The wiki (see
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces) refers to this as "Mixed mbox and
Maildir". It advises handling this situation by creating two
namespaces: one for the mbox and the other for the maildir. Each of
these namespaces starts with
namespace private {

Non-dovecot user looking for feedback
I've been using UW-IMAPd for neigh on forever (at least since 2001). But, as it's basically stalled, and I'm about to update the hardware that is my mail server, I thought it was time to review existing open-source IMAP servers. Dovecot is the top three in my looking.
The other of the top three candidates, because I know of people who've used it, is Cyrus IMAP. So, I should

CentOS-6 - LogWatch
The Logwatch imapd service script distributed with CentOS-6 does not
generate anything when I run logwatch --service all on a cyrus-imapd
host. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a separate script for
cyrus-imapd or are their configuration options required to get the
existing script to work.
I have found an ancient (2004) logwatch service script for cyrus-imapd
but I was sort of hoping that

IMAP Folder paths
Hello,
we like to use dovecot, but our old imapd used to store the paths of the
folder in the file ~/.mailboxlist. This file contains something like
this:
mail/read
mail/dovecot
.netscape/imap/mailbox
.Mail/foo
Each line with a path to one mbox folder. And please pay attention that
there is no path to the inbox, because this is stored on the server...
Is there a way to use this
