proxy errors with apache2.2.3 + mongrels
I''ve posted this to rails-deployment as well. I have to administer a medium size rails app (1''5 million requests each day), recently I''ve switched from lighttpd + fcgi to apache + mongrel. In the following lines I am going to describe the platform: All machines are running Debian Etch, with 4 gb ram and dual core intel32 processors. Web server runs debian''s

mod_proxy_balancer under heavy load.
So I''m still working on a ''perfect'' setup so I can document it on the wiki, and will submit some puppet patches against 0.23.2 next week, but here''s what I''ve done that has made a big difference to stability here. in puppetmasterd at line 261, I''ve modified the Mongrel instantiation from: server = Mongrel::HttpServer.new(addr,

problem with mongrel/apache2.2.3 and subdomain setup
Hi all I got a vps setup amazingly fast using the deprec recipes on Ubuntu edgy, but now I''m having a minor issue where my site loads for the main domain when I only want it accessible from the subdomain. This is a pretty typical setup, apache 2.2.3 -> mongrel_proxy_balancer -> mongrel cluster. I''m sure I''m missing something obvious in the config... I have the

dropping lighty+fastcgi and moving to apache+mongrel in production
Most of my machines have apache+mongrel running but the mongrels are using the localhost. In my production environment, I have 4 boxes. I have setup 2 http servers ( apache 2.2.4 ) and 2 app servers. They are currently using lighttpd+fastcgi. Which I am changing this week. I want to get advice from you guys before I actually do this since this is my production env. I have installed apache on the

[slightly OT] Apache 2.2.2 proxy config
Apologies, this may be off-topic. I''ve been wrestling with upload issues and Apache 2.2.2 / mod_proxy_balanacer / mongrel_cluster / Mongrel on Mac OS X Server 10.4.5. Typically the first upload would be fine but the next would make the mongrel instance remain running (ps state = "R") essentially locking up that instance. Apache would then eventually do: [Fri Jun 16 16:45:54

Design flaw? - num_processors, accept/close
Rails instances themselves are almost always single-threaded, whereas Mongrel, and it''s acceptor, are multithreaded. In a situation with long-running Rails pages this presents a problem for mod_proxy_balancer. If num_processors is greater than 1 ( default: 950 ), then Mongrel will gladly accept incoming requests and queue them if its rails instance is currently busy. So even

Apache 2.2.3 setup woes
Good morning everyone, I am running apache 2.2.3 compiled from source and proxy load balancer as described on the mongrel site. I have a total of three sites, this setup works really well for two of them but for one of them, I keep getting "Forbidden" errors and this error in the apache logs: [warn] proxy: No protocol handler was valid for the URL /. If you are using a DSO version of

my apache 2.2 conf
I just finished updating our internal site, which hosts multiple Rails apps, to Apache 2.2.3. It also has a TWiki rewritten into the root, ViewVC mounted on /cvs, and /server-status and /server-info. <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName int.example.com ServerAlias int CustomLog /var/www/logs/int.example.com/access.log combined ErrorLog /var/www/logs/int.example.com/error.log [...]

Exporting Load Balancer Worker Resources
Hi, Recently i''ve studying puppet by reading and doing the examples from this book: "Pro puppet". books.sysadmins.su/system/files/Pro.Puppet.pdf On page 145 from this book there is example about Exporting Load Balancer Worker Resources. I created the files inside already existing apache module. /etc/puppet/modules/apache/manifests/balancermember.pp define

mongrel tuning with httperf - suspicious results
Hello all, I''m attempting to test/tune a mongrel cluster according to the tuning instructions on the mongrel site (using httperf). Anecdotally, the site itself ''feels'' snappy, but testing it with httperf reveals what appears to be terrible throughput. I''m kind of at a loss to describe the results, and was hoping someone could verify that I''m testing

Session problem mongrel behind Apache proxy
Hi, I''ve configured mongrel_clusters behind an Apache 2.2 proxy using named virtual host. Session are saved as ActiveRecordSession. But the cookies created on client side doesn''t correspond to session data saved in database (keys are different). The RoR app react just like it doesn''t have a session at all. If I don''t use Apache as a proxy/load balancer

Apache2.2 + Mongrel: what do you think about these perfs?
Hi all, I''ve been spending quite a lot of time trying to install a decent RoR server on my dedicated server (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS), and now, everything works. However, the performances are not really what I had expected... I would like to know what you think about it. Here is my config: 2GHz VIA proc, 1Gb RAM, SATA-II HD. I have apt-got ruby 1.8.4, mysql5 and installed rails 1.1.4 by

mod_proxy_balancer mod_rewrite permission issue
I started the mongrel_cluster and tried to use the RewriteRule to forward the requests to proxy_balancer just as the http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/apache.html said. When I visited my site from a remote computer, I always got the error messages "Forbidden, You don''t have permission to access / on this server." Finally, I added the "Allow from all" property (in the

Load testing methodologies/tools
I tried a bunch of tools and ended up using Jakarta J-Meter b/c it works cross-platform (Unix/Windows in my situation) and has a gui which shallows the learning curve. I''ve been quite satisfied with it.. Search the archives on this list and you should be able to find some great info Zed and others wrote a while back on How to Load Test Correctly. I found that series of posts to be

trying to add another app
hey all, I have an app working great with apache2 and mongrel_cluster. However, I''m trying to run another application and now when I go to app1.comit falls to app2.com and the opposite. That''s probably because I messed up somewhere with the cluster. this is the content of my conf.d/app1.proxy_cluster.conf: <Proxy balancer://mongrel_cluster> BalancerMember
