"userdb didn't return a home directory" with v1.1.7
Hi all,
I am running Dovecot v1.1.7 in a relatively quiet and calm environment.
Suddenly overnight cron job started throwing out errors like:
/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool
Error: userdb(user1 at mail.example) didn't return a home directory
Error: userdb(user2 at mail.example) didn't return a home directory
Indeed, running this command produces:

Data loss from removing dovecot.index* files?
Hi there,
I've been rewriting the courier-dovecot-migrate script to handle
dovecot->courier conversions in addition to courier->dovecot. One
issue I've found is that when the courier->dovecot conversion is
performed a second time (using --overwrite) and the dovecot-uidlist
file is written again, Dovecot starts generating errors when accessing
the maildir. The simple

Dovecot NFS Indexes and IMAP Migration
Hi there,
After being extremely impressed from implementing it in some customer
installations, I've decided to migrate our mail infrastructure to dovecot.
Being able to have /bin/checkpassword support across the board for pop,
imap, and smtp authentication, as well as being able to ditch stunnel for
the SSL layer...where were you in 2001?!? :)
I have two concerns, the first is about the

PATCH: flexible array members in dovecot 1.1
It looks like the build problems with the flexible array members in
Dovecot 1.1 and GCC 2.95 has been raised several times already on this
list, but no one mentioned out that autoconf 2.61+ provides a macro to
deal with these.

Request for help with new plugin
Hi there,
I was having lots of trouble with the normal expire plugin so I
decided to try and come up with a plugin that handles the trash
directory in the same way as Courier (when the user logs out it should
clean messages from the trash that have been there for more than X
days.) I used the expire and trash plugins as a guide but there are
probably a number of things done wrong here

forward flag metadata
In testing the migration from courier-imap to dovecot I've discovered
that the forward flag on messages isn't kept track of in a standard way.
courier-imap seems to keep track of forwarded messages in courierimapkeywords/:list
dovecot seems to add an 'a' flag to the filename.
Unfortunately this 'a' flag information doesn't seem to be given out by dovecot.
It's

Courier-dovecot migration issue: Forward and Junk flags
Hello.. Another courier -> dovecot migrater here.. I ham having a bit of
trouble converting the courier maildir correctly, or actually i'm almost
there. The only thing i experience is that forwarded messages and
messages marked as junk (in thunderbird) are downloaded again (i am
using thunderbird and caching) after running the
courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script and connecting to the

migration and conversion from courier
Dear all,
back in January I posted about migration from courier and in
particular on the script courier-dovecot-migrate.pl.
That script had a bug on BSD (or should I say not-Linux?) type
systems*. On FreeBSD (6.1) and MacOSX (10.5) it appended a lot of
binary garbage at the end of dovecot-keywords files.
On a couple of systems I had not actually run the script with the --
convert option,

dovecot and firstname.initial.lastname mbox format archive
hi
Today I have been in a puzzling fight with 2 dovecot versions that I would
like to ask some comments on.
The situation is this:
- I have a considerable mail archive in mbox format (yes, I know, but that
is what I have..).
- My mail reader is mutt 1.5.20 by the way.
- Some of these mbox files have names like firstname.initial.lastname
Note the . seperating the parts of the email-ers name.

LDAP, MD5-CRYPT, invalid credentials, BUG or config issue?
Hi,
I read a lot of howto's and I got problems with LDAP and Dovecot to work
together.
I'm using:
Gentoo Linux 2008.0 hardened
Dovecot 1.1.7

OpenLDAP 2.3.43
My dovecot-ldap.conf is:

auth_bind = yes
auth_bind_userdn = uid=%u,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com
ldap_version = 3

Poor pop3 over nfs performance
Hi,
About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers
from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP
performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse
than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to
http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling
about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but
