Large compression test
A large test I ran on flac 1.0 recently finished so I thought I'd post the results. I took about 60 CDs, totalling around 30 gigs uncompressed, and compressed them all using all 10 of flac's default compression modes (-0 through -9). The CDs are of a wide variety of music; I think the only major genres not represented are country and rap (freudian slip). Anyway, the raw numbers: Opt

How to Reshuffle a distance object
I would like to randomly shuffle a distance object, such as the one created by ade4{dist.binary} below. My first attempt, using sample(jc.dist) creates a shuffled vector, losing the lower triangular structure of the distance object. How can I Ishuffle the lower triangular part of a distance matrix without losing the structure? Thanks. --Dale x1 <- c(rep(0,4),1) x2 <- c(rep(0,2),rep(1,3))

Released Pigeonhole v0.2.1 for Dovecot v2.0.4
Hello Dovecot users, There haven't been that many Pigeonhole developments lately, not even really significant bugs were reported. That is why this release is pretty small in terms of changes. However, one issue got some attention: the fact that not recompiling Pigeonhole for Dovecot v2.0.3 would result in rather interesting message delivery. Normally, Dovecot would complain about a

Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others
Hi, I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything works fine. I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a town hall. 1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and

Office 2007 saves files as read only on samba shares?
I've been running the same configuration for a couple of years now, and since I've upgraded to Office 2007, MS Word and MS Excel files save to my samba shares as -r-------- even when they are opened as being chmod 777. Files I create/edit using other editors or windows explorer are put onto the share with the correct permissions. My conf looks like this: [global] workgroup = WG

/var/www/html
Hi everyone, by default, /var/www/html/ folder is under user/group root. Is it a good idea to change this to apache user/group? I'm trying to set up web server box using CentOS 4.2. Any idea how this change can effect the system and php programming? Any pros & cons for this change??? Any security risk to have /var/www/html/ folder under user/group root? Thanks, JC

possible format change
After doing a lot of automated seek testing on files, it looks like the length of the sync code (currently 9 bits) is not long enough to enable a really robust AND efficient seek algorithm. Lengthening the sync code will require a format change (i.e. FLAC <0.8 streams won't play back on FLAC >0.9 decoders), so I'm sending this message out to see if there is any "NO DON'T DO

[LLVMdev] Building LLVM under Mingw. Part I: tools-only
Hello, Jeff. You wrote Saturday, April 29, 2006, 7:35:46 PM: JC> Bison 1.875 is known to have problems building LLVM. Please upgrade to JC> a newer version (at least 1.875d). The current version is 2.1. Hmm.. I haven't found any problem building LLVM with that bison. ;) The problem, when ld crashed compiling llc is much more serious. It seems to be linker bug. -- With best regards,
