Imap logout message on Dovecot restart
I'm trying to receive a "Disconnected" message in my logfile for the
connected imap-clients when I restart dovecot.
When you disconnect a client, you receive the following message in your log:
Mar 12 21:45:55 mail dovecot: IMAP(mailbox at domain.com): Disconnected:
Logged out bytes=7496/22441
When a IMAP client is connected and Dovecot is restarted, this message is
not shown.

Dovecot versions and index compatibility
I realize these are older versions, but I'd like to know specifically
whether dovecot 1.1.6 and dovecot 1.1.8 are compatible index-wise.
In particular, if we downgraded from 1.1.8 to 1.1.6 would there be any
issues with doing so?
I realize there are later versions, but we've tested both of the above
extensively, but recently loaded up a server with 1.1.8 and found that

Running dovecot master processes across multiple IPs
We are running dovecot 1.1.8 and are currently running it with 4 master
processes (one for each of the protocols: imap, imaps, pop3, pop3s).
The idea was to spread out the load so as to not overwhelm any one master.
This has worked well. To take it further, we're contemplating running
masters across multiple IP addresses, where the host/service name DNS
records would be something like this:

dovecot.conf pop3_uidl_format
From the Dovecot 1.0.1 sample dovecot.conf file:
# If you want UIDL compatibility with other POP3 servers, use:
# UW's ipop3d : %08Xv%08Xu
...
# Note that Outlook 2003 seems to have problems with %v.%u format
which was
# Dovecot's default, so if you're building a new server it would be a
good
# idea to change this. %08Xu%08Xv should be pretty fail-safe.

nfs_flush errors
I'm looking for some help with an nfs error that is filling our logs. I
get a constant stream of these messages:
Jul 8 10:47:08 servername dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error]
IMAP(username): nfs_flush_file_handle_cache_dir: rmdir(/var/mail)
failed: Device busy
I have two dovecot IMAP servers. All mailboxes are NFS mounted. The
INBOX is /var/mail and the rest are in

OT: Run Sieve On A Mailbox Manually
(Apologies for being offtopic.)
The subject basically says it all...does anyone know of a tool to run
a sieve script on a mailbox (in particular, Maildirs) manually?
Ideally, I'd like to do it without adding a bunch of new headers to
the mail.
So, could I just do a find (or for-loop, if it was just one maildir)
command and pipe all the mails into deliver..?
Thanks,
Neil.

mail archive
I'd like to download a complete mail archive so that I can browse
for problems concerning Mulberry. Is this possible, or can I only
get them in monthly gulps?
Cheers,
Terry.

Setting a Default Domain
I'm working on migrating to Dovecot. At the moment, I have a mail path
that includes the domain, so I'm using %d to get that. However, if users
authenticate without specifying a domain (i.e. using "bob" instead of
"bob at wiktel.com"), then %d expands to nothing. I'd like to have that
expand to a default domain (wiktel.com) instead. Is that possible?
Thanks,

Client workaround?
I have a phone (LG CU320) with a built-in IMAP client. However, it
has some issues. For one, the phone crashes if there are greater than
some-as-of-yet-determined-number-of folders. That can't be worked
around at the server, but this one can:
After a long session of staring at tcpdump, it appears that when it
logs in it does so like this:

[sfs@tc.umn.edu: Re: dovecot-auth file descriptor usage]
I hate to be a pest, but are there any revelations on file descriptor
"overusage" by dovecot-auth?

Dovecot and NFS with file locking
Greetings all,
I'm trying to get an understanding of a problem we are facing here.
We're currently running dovecot 1.0-beta3 and have a long standing issue
of system crashes on our mail server (Debian Linux 2.4.27-2-k7-smp).
Here's what is happening:
The machine hangs and the system load climbs as high as 80.0+. Yet, the
system response is not effected. Command line is still

Solaris/SSLonly/Lots of Users
Anyone running Dovecot on Solaris, requiring only SSL connections, and
servicing thousands of simultaneous users? Our past attempts to do so
have failed due to dovecot-auth using up all 256 of its file descriptors.
I say 256 since we are limited to that by the 32-bit libraries.
We are looking at either compiling Dovecot in 64-bit and letting dovecot-auth
file descriptors accumulate (not ideal),

UTF-8 mailbox names in filesystem
Currently mailbox names are stored in IMAP's modified-UTF-7 format in
filesystem. I was wondering about changing this in v2.0. The default
would still be to use mUTF-7 in filesystem, but just adding :UTF8 or
something to mail_location could enable UTF-8.
Any thoughts? Could this be dangerous somehow? UTF-8 enables a lot of
weird characters, perhaps no one really wants to see them on

[sfs: dovecot-auth file descriptor usage]
I am re-posting this message from last Friday, as I have seen no replies.
It is critical that we address this problem, since until then we cannot
put more than a few hundred users on our server.
If Dovecot-auth TRULY needs to keep open a file descriptor for every single
login session, we will have to start looking at alternatives.
In short: Help!

Index files in .imap directory
A few RC releases ago we had a problem where a user's restored home directory
contained a .imap folder either from a previous RC release or perhaps it was
a different server. In any event, restoration of the user caused problems
since Dovecot choked on the restored .imap index files. Removing those index
files cleared the problem. I'm wondering if this is still an issue, and

odd behavior with Dovecot LDA
Okay, to convince myself that quota handling was working okay with
Dovecot 1.0-rc27 on Solaris 10, I tested sending a message to an
account that was purposely over-quota. The account in question had
a vacation message set up.
For the first test, there was no $HOME/.imap directory at all.
I received the vacation message, but the message which was supposed
to be delivered locally queued in Postfix

I am trying to authenticate using "PLAIN" but I don?t know how.

Trying IP.AD.RE.SS...
Connected to conny.MYDOMAIN.de.
