imap locking spool?
How does IMAP lock the /var/spool/mail/user file? Here's my problem: I'm writing a script to expire old or oversize mail through a series of archive folders. I don't want to take the whole server down to do this, nor does it seem like I would have to lock the user out entirely if I can manage to emulate the locks correctly. I am able to lock /var/spool/mail/user (and ~user/mail/*)

Dotlock dovecot-uidlist errors / NFS / High Load
As of late our four node dovecot 1.2.13 cluster has been experiencing a massive number of these dotlock errors: Created dotlock file's timestamp is different than current time (1295480202 vs 1295479784): /mail/user/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist These dotlock errors correspond with very high load averages, and eventually we have to turn off all but one server to stop them from occurring. dotlock errors without using dotlock
I have a few clients that have more than one user in the same mailbox. I have my setup using fctrl for mailbox and index locking. My mail is stored on a network file system (gluster) and my indexes are stored on the local drive. I have a few issues: - My users mailboxes have issues where messages will be mixed up (you go to open a message and it gets a different message) - messages will

Autoexpunge is not working with dotlock locking
Hello, Autoexpunge is not working when used with dotlock locking. It seems to been broken since version 2.2.28. When autoexpunge is enabled and mailbox locking is set to dotlock all imap, pop and lmtp connections crash with the same error "file file-lock.c: line 287: unreached". Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR

Fwd: Re: Dotlock dovecot-uidlist errors / NFS / High Load
Stan, Thanks for the reply. In our case we have actually already done most of the work you suggested to no avail. We had rebuilt two new ntp servers that sync against two stratum 1 sources, and all our nfs clients, regardless of using dovecot, sync to those two machines. You bring up the difference between bare metal and hypervisor, and we are running these machines on vmware 4.0. All the

dotlock timestamp trouble
Hi there, I'm getting a lot of this message in production log: Created dotlock file's timestamp is different than current time (1232468644 vs 1232468524): /path/to/dovecot.index.log The IT guy swears the clocks are sincronized. Whe even have made a test in the machine running dovecot, inside the user's mailbox: # > foo; ls -l --time-style=full-iso foo; date -rw-r--r-- 1 root root

Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?
If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

locking questions
I have Dovecot 1.0 in trial use by the IT staff, and have some locking questions Background, the mail server runs procmail, sendmail and NFS exports the user homedir and mailbox to a) a login shell host and b) a mailing list services host. It runs UWIMAP on the usual ports and dovecot on a arbitrary port number. Because of concern with NFS and file access contention. I have the following

Quotas once again
Its been a while since I tried dovecot on my mail server where I have quota issues. I am using mbox file format. There still seems to be a quota problem. I have only /var with quotas and basedir is under /usr (not quotaed). default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u. I tried with mbox_locks = dotlock fcntl (1st set of logs below) and with mbox_locks = fcntl (2nd set of logs) dotlock:

change inbox dotlock name
Hi, Is there a configuration element that would allow me to change the dot-lock name for the user's /var/mail inbox when it is locked? dovecot (correctly) acquires <username>.lock, but I'm having a problem with procmail where some obscure code path is preventing procmail's acquisition of a lock when it's that default name in /var/mail. The issue is not permissions

nfs dotlock issues
Hi List, While testing with dovecot-1.0-test8 on our platform, I get al lot of these: May 11 11:42:50 mf1 dovecot: imap(user at domain.tld): Our dotlock file /var/mail/mounted/d/do/domain.tld/user/Maildir/.INBOX/ dovecot.index.log.lock was modified (1084268570 vs 1084268875), assuming it wasn't overridden This is probably due to some time-issues on our platform, and the load the

Quota count does not work with lock_method=dotlock
Hello, dovecot crashes when I switch the quota tracking from dict to count. The following is working since years: quota = dict:User quota::proxy::quota I'm using a mysql quota dictionary. Now I want to switch to the new "quota count" + "quota clone" combination. I'm loading the "quota_clone" plugin, and: #quota = dict:User quota::proxy::quota

mbox locking
Hello, I'd like to make sure my understanding of the mbox locking strategy is correct : - "mbox_dotlock_change_timeout" directive : a process seeing that an already locked (by another process) mbox he want to access hasn't change for this amount of time, allows himself to override the lock ? If it's using fcntl, is it only possible to override ? -

dovecot-lda can't create /var/mail dotlocks on debian
I've been using dovecot+postfix happily for many years, and I'm now configuring it for a new machine. However, I'm running into an old problem again, and thinking that there must be a better solution. The problem is that dovecot-lda is unable to create dotlock files in the /var/mail directory. Dovecot version: 1:2.2.13-12~deb8u1 (I'm guessing this is upstream version 2.2.13) OS:
