Has anybody noticed validates_uniqueness_of missing in rails 3.0 rc2? I''m not sure if this is a bug or I''m just doing something wrong. Here''s what I''m doing. Class 1: class Title < ActiveRecord::Base validates_length_of :language, :is => 3 validates_uniqueness_of :language, :scope => :book_id validate :language,

Table belongs_to either of two other tables?
Suppose I have a site about books and authors, and users can leave comments on either a book or an author. I''d want to have a table called "comments", which could belong to either an author OR a book. In my structure I wouldn''t be sure whether to include an "author_id" or a "book_id", or both. What would be the best way to handle this

Need help .. Rails Recipes, in_place_editor, selecting associations
Hi, I am currently reading the Rails Recipes book and like the chapter on providing your own in_place_editor for enumerations / selects. I understood so far, or I believe that I understood ;-), how to do that for a field that uses values only, like choosing from "red", "black", "green". What I fail to understand is how to chose from associated objects?!

URLS and Human Factors
This post addresses URLs generated by Ruby on Rails from a human factors point of view. Allow me to use Hieraki as an example. Hieraki is a great application. It was one of my first introductions to the power of Ruby on Rails. Scenario: When I navigated to Chapter 1 of a book the URL in my address bar was http://www.library.com/read/chapter/6. This inconsistancy ("Am I on Chapter 1 or

Scalability and Possiblity
I''m not sure this is the appropriate community to get objective unbiased feedback on this issue, but I suppose it''s worth a gander... Here''s my question: Is it possible to write a massively scalable application intented for millions of users (i.e. Yahoo, Google, MySpace, etc.) using Ruby on Rails? I''m sure apps like these can be built, but can they scale to

Help setting up relationships needed
This is a bit of a long question, but to those of you with some experience, it should be fairly simple I think. I have a notes page that should list all notes the user has entered for all books chronologically like this. Book One: This is the note. Book Four: This is the note. Book One: A different note, entered later. Right now my models are: User has_many :books Book has_many

Creating a comments system for multiple types of content
Hi all My site has news entries, it has a party calendar and it has a blog. Now I''d like to create a commenting system that in fact is quite simple, but I wanna use it for all these 3 types of content. My question: how can I do that? I maybe could add an association to all three types in the comment model: class Comment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :news_item belongs_to

How to query with calculations?
Hi, I would like to do something simple yet I''m confused. Lets say I have a table with 2 fields: rank, updated_at. I would like to show all records matching this condition: rank = rank ? (Time.now.to_time ? Updated_at.to_time) As you can see this is supposed to be a calculation on the field. How do I write a query to show this? I''ve tried with_scope, and regular find but did not

Customizing show
I''m trying to tidy up my first rails app, and want to customize the action ''show'' (created by generating a scaffold). It''s a recipe database, and some of the fields are not required when submitting a new recipe, such as the "History" field. However, when I want to show that recipe, I don''t want the column name "History" to show if

anything rails based app like pligg or digg out there ?
I am wanting to do something like digg but internally at our company and am looking for a rails based starting point. There is something out there called pligg which seems pretty good, but it is PHP based and I expect to be making quite a few changes/additions, so would really prefer a project based on rails ! - hope to hear from you --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You

Building a Search Page as part of CRUD
I''ve been experimenting with Rails over the past couple of days and have come across something that seems harder than it should be. In previous frameworks I have used (WebObjects, php) a full search page (which leads into a list view populated with search results) was part of the CRUD that was either dynamically or statically created after specifying table/object schema. why do text_fields appear smaller in IE than other browsers?
In testing my application on different browsers, I''ve noticed a few differences:- a password_field :size=>20 is smaller than a text_field :size=>20 on Internet Explorer. They are the same on Firefox and Safari. makes my login box look silly. the same can be seen on the login screen for this forum. the password box is a little shorter on IE6. more annoying however is I have

question about saving associations when using has_many :through
I''ve got a User model and a Book model. A user is required to submit books each month to be reviewed by other users. I have the following relationships defined: # the join model book_review.rb belongs_to :user belongs_to :book end book.rb # each book is reviewed by many users. This allows us to get the BookReview # objects associated with this book has_many :book_reviews,

Mock or Stub strategy for validates_uniqueness_of
Hi, I''m a bit stuck with mocking a unit test of a join model with regards to a validates_uniqueness_of clause. I have class Book < AR:B has_many :clippings various validates_presence_of etc end class Clip < AR:B has_many :clippings various validates_presence_of etc end class Clipping < AR:B belongs_to :book belongs_to :clip validates_uniqueness_of :clip_id,
