how can I control when to commit a transaction?
hello
it seems like this question has appeared a few times with no answer:
how do you get rails to issue ''write'' statements (ie ''CREATE/UPDATE'') to
the database without committing each time?
I tried setting
ActiveRecord::Base.connection.begin_db_transaction
before calling any action on my object, but as soon as
myObject.save
or
myObject.update
is called,

dynamic setting of username and password in database.yml
Hello
I''ve now read a lot about application-level authentication in Rails, but
I need to do database-level authentication.
The reason is that my database needs to have the current_user (database
current_user, not current_user defined in an ActiveRecord Model) set to
execute triggers for automatically updating audit tables. So it is not
enough to have a session check against a User

Namespace & Organisation Conventions
Hi All
I wanted a little advice on the convention for namespace usage and
organisation of code.
I originally used PHP and often had an "admin" backend that performed the
various admin tasks with users, and data
Then I had a front-end often situated at the root that had user services.
I''m trying to emulate this in Rails but feel I''m missing a significant point

Uploading photos using facebook & attachment_fu
Hi All,
I''m trying to use a form to upload a photo that I will save using
attachment_fu. I''m very new to Facebookr so I apologize if this is covered
somewhere, but I''m kind of stumped.
Here''s what I''m doing now:
<% facebook_form_for(:my_object, :url => { :action => ''upload_photo'', :id =>
params[:id] }, :html => {

Testing equality
Hello
How can I test equality with two objects when they include some
attribute that is BigDecimal?
if I make something like this:
it "should ...whatever" do
obj = Factory.create(:my_object)
...
MyObject.first.should == obj
end.
FAILS
This fails because the object expected is different from the object
gotten, and the only difference are the BigDecimal attributes, that are

Specifying that code is called in a block
Not sure if this is possible currently.
I have a section of code like this:
ActiveRecord::Base.transaction do
cow.save!
duck.save!
dog.save!
end
(Names changed to protect the innocent.)
I''d like to specify that the saves run in a transaction. I can do
ActiveRecord::Base.should_receive(:transaction).and_yield
But is there any way to specify that the code is

errors.add_to_base
What are the limitations on using:
errors.add_to_base
to display errors in views?
I have tried for days to add errors from my object.rb and they never get
displayed.

How to fake composite primary keys?
I know ActiveRecord doesn''t support composite primary keys, but I need to use
one, and I need it ASAP. I don''t need any composite foreign keys, luckily;
what I have is a table that stores old versions of rows in another table, so
the composite key is an id + date stamp. Would someone tell me a hack I can
use to support this?

RoR VS Rails ???
I didn''t get a chance to go to this meeting debating WebObjects Vs
Rails, but here''s a report about it:
http://desperatepundit.com/blog/cremes/technology/2006/02/15/WebObjects-versus-Ruby-On-Rails.html
I don''t get what he''s saying, hand coding the model? yeah, you COULD ...
but what about script/generate ???
And is that so what he said about security?

RoR: recognizing a defined class
Hi all,
I am very new to Ruby and I have a silly question: how do I get RoR to
"recognize" that I just defined a class? To be more explicit, I have a
controller and view, and then I want to create a class and get the
controller to "see" it. So, I created a file called "myobject.rb" in the
models/ directory and inside it defined "class myobject [...] end".

Transactions and migrations (lots of records)???
Hi all -
I know this must be really easy to do, but I can''t for the life of me
figure it out.
I have about 100,000 rows I need to migrate over into rails using a
migration.
Right now, I select all of them out of the old database and do a series
of:
...
new.col = old.col
...
new.save
...
Problem is each one is it''s own transaction. And it''s slow. I''d

rsync via ssh
Hi,
We have 2 problems with rsync over ssh that we
haven't been able to replicate all the time.
Basically, we have a developement server running
Solaris 2.5.1 and another running Solaris 2.6, the
development tree is shared via nfs. When minor
changes are made they are distibuted to various
mirror sites via a perl script which does some
checks (path, etc) and runs 'rsync -e ssh ....'

Samba BDC and mirroring Homes
We have samba 2.0.0 running on Solaris 2.6 (Sparc)
sharing out various directories and user homes.
Recently I've set it up for Win98 logins and all
this is working fine. Unfortunately this also
means that if the server has to go down so do the
clients, as we're pushing the users to use the
server as much as possible.
My question is what would be the best way to set
up a Backup Samba

testing with transactions
Hello!
I experienced problems with testing transactions which are supposed to be
rolled back, but are not, because of transactional fixtures eliminating the
inner transaction. Can this be worked around somehow without turning off
transactional fixtures? Maybe savepoints can help this?
Does anyone have any experience with savepoints to achieve nested transaction
functionality? Both Postgres

Implementing a boolean "switch" in a Class
I need a single boolean which would be "globally" accessible to all
instances of a class. Seems like the boolean should be in the class
prototype, but I was troubled by the difficulty of setting the prototype
boolean to true. Maybe I''m missing something?
var MyObject = Class.create();
MyObject.prototype = {

how to create a new data type
I am working on a new package to do fire department analysis. I am working
with emergency dispatch data from different agencies that all contain the
same information but have slightly different formats. Typically the
variable names and date-time formats are different. I am getting pretty
good at reading in and rearranging the data so that it is essentially in the
same format, but it is common

update_all not changing updated_at
Hi everyone-
Model.update_all works and changes the records, but it''s not changing
the updated_at field. Am I doing something wrong or is this by
design?
Thanks,
Dino
