ZFS + Raid-Z pool size incorrect?
I''m seeing odd behaviour when I create a ZFS raidz pool using three disks. The output of "zpool status" shows the pool size as the size of the three disks combined (as if it were a Raid 0 volume). This isn''t expected behaviour is it? When I create a mirrored volume in ZFS everything is as one would expect the pool is the size of a single drive.
My setup:

Help! ZFS pool is UNAVAILABLE
Hi All,
I posted this in a different threat, but it was recommended that I post in this one.
Basically, I have a 3 drive raidz array on internal Seagate drives. running build 64nv. I purchased 3 add''l USB drives with the intention of mirroring and then migrating the data to the new USB drives.
I accidentally added the 3 USB drives in a raidz to my original storage pool, so now I have 2

Moving a pool from FreeBSD 8.0 to opensolaris
I was wondering what the best method of moving a pool from FreeBSD 8.0 to
OpenSolaris is.
When i originally built my system, it was using hardware which wouldn''t work
in opensolairs, but i''m about to do an upgrade so i should be able to use
Opensolaris when i''m done.
My current system uses a Highpoint RocketRaid 2340. It has 12 1TB hard
drives an intel core2 quad

Mixed ZFS vdev in same pool.
I have a question about using mixed vdev in the same zpool and what the community opinion is on the matter. Here is my setup:
I have four 1TB drives and two 500GB drives. When I first setup ZFS I was under the assumption that it does not really care much on how you add devices to the pool and it assumes you are thinking things through. But when I tried to create a pool (called group) with four

ZFS thinks my 7-disk pool has imaginary disks
Hi all,
I recently created a RAID-Z1 pool out of a set of 7 SCSI disks, using the
following command:
# zpool create magicant raidz c5t0d0 c5t1d0 c5t2d0 c5t3d0 c5t4d0 c5t5d0
c5t6d0
It worked fine, but I was slightly confused by the size yield (99 GB vs the
116 GB I had on my other RAID-Z1 pool of same-sized disks).
I thought one of the disks might have been to blame, so I tried swapping it

zfs? page faults
Hi,
I have setup an old Compaq Proliant DL580 with 2 xeon @700MHz 2Gb RAM
two SmartArray 5300 controllers and 12 drives in an array enclosure.
I am running the latest opensolaris update bfu''ed from binaries since I
could not build from source. I am controlling the drives with the
cpqary3 driver (Solaris 10) from HP.
Initially the array had 7 drives and I created a raidz zfs pool

ZFS partially hangs when removing an rpool mirrored disk while having some IO on another pool on another partition of the same disk
Hello,
Sorry for the (very) long subject but I''ve pinpointed the problem to this exact situation.
I know about the other threads related to hangs, but in my case there was no < zfs destroy > involved, nor any compression or deduplication.
To make a long story short, when
- a disk contains 2 partitions (p1=32GB, p2=1800 GB) and
- p1 is used as part of a zfs mirror of rpool

How to have ZFS root with /usr on a separate datapool
Ref: http://blogs.sun.com/timf/entry/zfs_bootable_datasets_happily_rumbling
Ref: http://mediacast.sun.com/share/timf/zfs-actual-root-install.sh
This is my errata for Tim Foster''s zfs root install script:
1/ Correct mode for /tmp should be 1777.
2/ The zfs boot install should allow you to have /usr on a separate zpool:
a/ We need to create /zfsroot/usr/lib in the root partition and

ZFS mirror to RAIDz?
Hi all,
I currently have four drives in my OpenSolaris box. The drives are split into two mirrors, one mirror containing my rpool (disks 1 & 2) and one containing other data (disks 2 & 3).
I''m running out of space on my data mirror and am thinking of upgrading it to two 2TB disks. I then considered replacing disk 2 with a 2TB disk and making a RAIDz from the three new drives.

upgrading to the latest zfs version
Hi guys, after reading the mailings yesterday i noticed someone was after upgrading to zfs v21 (deduplication) i''m after the same, i installed osol-dev-127 earlier which comes with v19 and then followed the instructions on http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev/en/index.shtml to bring my system up to date, however, the system is reporting no updates are available and stays at zfs v19, any ideas?

zfs root pool on upgraded host
Hi,
I installed opensolaris on a x2200 m2 with two internal drives that had
an existing root pool with a Solaris 10 update 6. After installing
opensolaris 2009.06 the host refused to boot. The opensolaris install
was fine. I had to pull the second hard drive to get the host to boot.
Then insert the second drive and relabel the old root pool to something
other than rpool. Then the host was

Interesting Pool Import Failure
Hello... Since there has been much discussion about zpool import failures
resulting in loss of an entire pool, I thought I would illustrate a scenario
I just went through to recover a faulted pool that wouldn''t import under
Solaris 10 U5. While this is a simple scenario, and the data was not
terribly important, I think the exercise should at least give some piece of
mind to those who

raidz pool metadata corrupted nexanta-core->freenas 0.7->nexanta-core
I made a bad judgment and now my raidz pool is corrupted. I have a
raidz pool running on Opensolaris b85. I wanted to try out freenas 0.7
and tried to add my pool to freenas.
After adding the zfs disk,
vdev and pool. I decided to back out and went back to opensolaris. Now
my raidz pool will not mount and got the following errors. Hope someone
expert can help me recover from this error.

ZFS Filesystem Recovery on RAIDZ Array
This day went from usual Thursday to worst day of my life in the span of about 10 seconds. Here''s the scenario:

OpenSolaris+ZFS+RAIDZ+VirtualBox - ready for production systems?
Hi all,
I have been looking at various alternatives for a system that runs several Linux & Windows guests. So far my favorite choice would be OpenSolaris+ZFS+RAIDZ+VirtualBox. Is this combo ready to be a host for Linux & Windows guests? Or is it not 100% stable (yet)?
Greetings,
Evert

General question about ZFS and RAIDZ
Hello to the forum,
with my general question about ZFS and RAIDZ I want the following to know:
Must all harddisks for the storage pool have the same capacity or is it possible to use harddisks with different capacities?
Many thanks for the answers.
Best regards

ZFS root backup/"disaster" recovery, and moving root pool
Hi everyone
I am currently testing Solaris 11 Express. I currently have a root pool on a
mirrored pair of small disks, and a data pool consisting of 2 mirrored pairs
of 1.5TB drives.
I have enabled auto snapshots on my root pool, and plan to archive the daily
snapshots onto my data pool. I was wondering how easy it would be, in the
case of a root pool failure (i.e. both disks giving up the

ZFS panic while mounting lofi device?
I believe ZFS is causing a panic whenever I attempt to mount an iso image (SXCR build 39) that happens to reside on a ZFS file system. The problem is 100% reproducible. I''m quite new to OpenSolaris, so I may be incorrect in saying it''s ZFS'' fault. Also, let me know if you need any additional information or debug output to help diagnose things.
