Rails'' fixtures suck! But what about something like this?
Sorry about the very long email, but this is a hairy topic that''s been annoying me for some time and I decided to try to do something about. Also, if you got this twice, I apologize too, but it didn''t seem to have successfully gone out the first time. Background: ---------- I''ve been dealing with Rails for about a year and a half now. backgroundrb and rspec Stories
Hi, I would like to use backgroundrb inside a story, been trying to set this up for a while, but I think the only solution is to use fixture files and unit testing. The problem is that every time I call a new worker, the test database gets wiped out, and only has available the records in fixture files. Instead, it would be great if the test database maintains its state throughout the

creating a development db from existing db
Hi there, I would like to copy the schema and data from an existing database and create a development db with the schema and data. Is this possible? - I have heard of doing a ''schema dump'', what about a data dump. The data in the existing db is important - I worry that doing something could delete the data. Is this fear unfounded? Chris. -- Posted via

Converting mysql to postgres
Hi, Anyone got any cool tricks for converting a Rails site (in this case, a typo installation) from a mysql database to a postgresql database? I''ve got it almost working -- I''m doing a SQL dump from mysql and loading it into postgres. However, mysql does booleans as a tinyint with 0 = false and 1 = true. When I try to import that into a postgres database that expects booleans

Pre-populate db with yaml outside of testing?
Hi. What is the best way to pre-populate your database with records while developing, not testing? For example, I want to: 1) > [run this command to populate db] 2) > ruby script/server 3) now I can surf to localhost:3000 and my app will already have relevant data I''m hoping to use yaml to suck it in. Is there a way to use the Fixture class to handle this even though this is

Fixtures are not loading into instance variables. Why not?
Hi, I have a fixture in a unit test and I see that the fixture is loaded correctly into the database table, but no instance variables are created. So now I''m stuck. More background: this is my first RoR project and I have just installed the SaltedLoginGenerator and generated its output. Running the unit tests gives an error, so I cut it down to just 1 test:

load fixtures
I''m finally getting beyond using basic test fixtures, and a few questions have popped up. Has anyone found ways to do these? 1. Use a test fixture that is named differently from its table name? We''d like to have more than one possible fixture per table. (Or perhaps use test fixtures named similarly but in different directories.) 2. Load a test fixture for one test method only

Testing STI models
Hi everyone! I have a question: what is the preferred way (in terms of simplicity) to test models with single table inheritance. Right now I have 1 test case and 1 fixture for all of the STI models, but it''s very hard to maintain it (too many tests and records in fixture). It would be better if fixtures could be named separately from DB tables. I know, Engines plugin has

My first test - named fixture not autoloading instance variable
I''m trying to write a test like the one at the bottom of page 148 in Agile Rails. I''m using rails 1.0 I''ve created the fixture correctly I''m pretty sure because the test database table is being populated per the fixture. I have what I think is a simple unit test: ========= require File.dirname(__FILE__) + ''/../test_helper'' class CaseTest

nonstandard postgresql sequence names
I''m working with a legacy postgresql database where the names of tables, columns, etc., do not usually follow Rails conventions. I''ve been able to work around it for the most part, but I ran into this: I have the following test: require File.dirname(__FILE__) + ''/../test_helper'' class SponsorTest < Test::Unit::TestCase self.use_transactional_fixtures =

Manually loading fixture data
Hi all, I''ve got some tables with fixed amounts of data in them (a "states" table, for example). For tables like this I can easily put *all* of the data in the fixture. For general futzing purposes, and for those times I want to reload a database from scratch outside of testing (for whatever reason), what''s the best approach? I thought perhaps ActiveRecord::Base had
