[PATCH] isohybrid: Generate MBR even when in EFI mode
Various EFI systems insist that there be no active flag in the pMBR in order to parse the GPT. The only way around this is to also generate a valid MBR - the firmware will then pick that up and use the system partition provided there. In order to deal with other EFI "sanity" checks, the partition type for the non-EFI partitions is set to 0 to skip the firmware bailing because of

[PATCH] Update diag/mbr instruction to match the current filename.
From: Jean-Christian de Rivaz <jc at eclis.ch> I suspect that some instructions about how to use the diag/mbr was not updated when the source file was renamed to handoff.S. Here is a simple proposition to fix that. Unprivileged user can write to mbr
Hi, I'm having trouble rationalizing the behaviour described below. Is this a security-issue (bug) or a feature? - An unprivileged user 'bztest' with read-only access to /dev/ar0: %id uid=1004(bztest) gid=1004(test) groups=1004(test), 5(operator) %ls -l /dev/ar0 crw-r----- 1 root operator 4, 21 Nov 23 17:34 /dev/ar0 - Now, the device ar0 has the standard mbr installed: %cmp

mbr?
a bit unrelated, still I wonder: does syslinux contain an mbr? or does anyone know any app that contains an mbr and can install it, without overwriting the partition table? my experience is, that is wise to have an mbr and use the active flag to select the active partition (which might have a bootmanager installed). however every linux distribution I know installed the bootloader such as

If you read https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/installation_guide/sect-disk-partitioning-setup-x86#sect-bootloader-mbr-gpt-x86 carefully, it seems to say that if you have UEFI and an MBR

Re-doing the MBR
I tried to install CentOS 4.4. This was on a machine where I've got Windows XP on the first partition (hda1). CentOS, like most of the distros will automatically install Grub in the MBR unless you tell it not to. In fact it will wipe the MBR first pretty early in the install. Here was my problem. During the install, the second CD had some sort of read issue. So I had to abort the install

Sending Calls via SIP trunk from two different IP addresses from same Asterisk Machine
Hi All; I can assign for my Asterisk Machine a two IP addresses (xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy and xxx.xxx.xxx.yyz), how can I use these two IP's so I can let one call sent with a source IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy and another call to be sent with another source IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.yyz, I need this because I need the side to authorize my calls by the IP address, and some calls to be authorized with the

Dummy question on Syslinux and MBR
Hi, I've seen that syslinux does include also a MBR record. But how can I install it on a HD under Windows? And how can I backup the previous MBR? Does syslinux help us on this task also? bye! -- Paolo Salvan _______________________________ X v i s i o n Via Vigonovese 123A 35127 - Padova - Italy +39 049 8709427 tel +39 049 8709426 fax www.xvision.it

How to recognize an MBR suitable for isohybrid --mac ?
Hi, i have implemented in xorriso the equivalents of isohybrid.c options --mac and --uefi. There remains the question how to ensure that the submitted MBR is prepared for the 32 byte mock-up of an APM Block0. I see in git of may 2012 that all mbr/isohdp[fp]x*.bin begin by 33 ed 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90

RAID5 - MBR and default grub config on CentOS 4
greetings, i just know i have read several times on this list and in other places that on a RAID5 array that the MBR should be placed on the /boot partition. is this truly correct and if so, why? my experiences of putting the MBR on the /boot partition are contrary to that it will even work and boot that way... comments please? regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications

Moving/copying the MBR
Are there any tools for working with and moving or copying the MBR? My machine has 2 PATA drives (hda & hdb) and 2 SATA drives (sda & sdb). The MBR is on hda, but I would like (eventually or sooner) to boot from sda because it is two years newer, faster and, hopefully, more reliable. Even if I don't change that, I'd like a backup MBR on sda in case hda fails (hdb has gone sour a

[extlinux] mbr.bin starts windows?
I'm trying to install extlinux on my dual-booting computer, but when i try cat mbr.bin > /dev/sda the computer boots windows (it doesn't even come up with the extlinux menu). My partition setup is as follows: /dev/sda1 -> NTFS (Windows) /dev/sda5 -> Linux Swap /dev/sda6 -> Linux Root (/) /dev/sda7 -> Linux Home (/home) Now I presume that mbr.bin calls the bootsector of

centos 5.2 install: mbr or no bootloader ?
I recently used a purchased centos 5.2 dvd to install. It all went smoothly, and I am up and running automagically it seems to have upgraded itself to 5.3 Final One peculiarity: I believe I was given the choice of: --installing the bootloader into mbr or --no bootloader install I did not want my mbr overwritten, so I chose no bootloader Why is there no choice of 1st sector of root partition?
