current zfs tuning in RELENG_7 (AMD64) suggestions ?
I gave the AMD64 version of 7.2 RC2 a spin and all installed as
expected off the dvd
INTEL S3200SHV MB, Core2Duo, 4G of RAM
In the past it had been suggested that for zfs tuning, something like
vm.kmem_size_max="1073741824"
vm.kmem_size="1073741824"
vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable=1
However doing a simple test with bonnie and dd, there does not seem
to be very much difference in

kernel memory and zfs
We have a 32 GB RAM server running about 14 zones. There are multiple databases, application servers, web servers, and ftp servers running in the various zones.
I understand that using ZFS will increase kernel memory usage, however I am a bit concerned at this point.

ARCSTAT Kstat Definitions
Would someone "in the know" be willing to write up (preferably blog) definitive definitions/explanations of all the arcstats provided via kstat? I''m struggling with proper interpretation of certain values, namely "p", "memory_throttle_count", and the mru/mfu+ghost hit vs demand/prefetch hit counters. I think I''ve got it figured out, but

RELENG_7_1: bce driver change generating too much interrupts ?
Since last upgrade, I see much more CPU time "eated" by interrupts (at
least 10% cpu in top)
(see http://dgeo.perso.ec-marseille.fr/cpu-week.png)
The server behave correctly (Or seems to?), and high interrupt number
seems to come from bce cards (source: systat -vmstat)

FreeBSD 6.3-Release + squid 2.6.17 = Hang process.
Hi:
We have a machine running 6.2-R-p10 and squid 2.6.17,
and upgrade it to 6.3R yesterday,
but squid will hang and eat 100% cpu time after restart about 1 hour later,
machine still alive, and no response from squid.
downgrade to 6.2-R-p10, everything ok again..
here is some infomations:

bce reporting fantom input errors?
Hi,
After changing cables, switches, ports, I came to the conclusion
that bce is reporting input errors that are not there, or creating them.
I checked this with 3 different boxes, all Dell-2950/Broadcom NetXtreme II
BCM5708 1000Base-T (B2), and one of them, while running Solaris, reported
0 errors after a week, and freebsd after a few minutes its count was > 100.
The errors appear under

On-delivery deduplication?

Hi,
A feature of Cyrus-IMAPd I really missed after migrated to Dovecot is
their optional "duplicate suppression", which eliminates duplicate
message at deliver time, if their envelope sender, recipient and

and someone hit "Reply All" to reply to him, there

ZFS slows down over a couple of days
Hi all,
I have exchanged my Dell R610 in favor of a Sun Fire 4170 M2 which has
32 GB RAM installed. I am running Sol11Expr on this host and I use it to
primarily serve Netatalk AFP shares. From day one, I have noticed that
the amount of free RAM decereased and along with that decrease the
overall performance of ZFS decreased as well.
Now, since I am still quite a Solaris newbie, I seem to

[RFC] FreeBSD port for dovecot 1.1 series
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,
I have put together a preliminary patchset for dovecot 1.1 at:
http://people.freebsd.org/~delphij/misc/dovecot-1.1-rc4.diff
My intention is to repocopy the current dovecot port to dovecot11 and
make changes on the latter. In this version of patchset, I have
intentionally removed the following chunk of change which by default
allows gid=0

Why does ARC grow above hard limit?
I would appreciate if somebody can clarify a few points.
I am doing some random WRITES (100% writes, 100% random) testing and observe that ARC grows way beyond the "hard" limit during the test. The hard limit is set 512 MB via /etc/system and I see the size going up to 1 GB - how come is it happening?
mdb''s ::memstat reports 1.5 GB used - does this include ARC as well or is

Using Dovecot with ZFS
Hi all,
I'm testing Dovecot version 1.2.17 on FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE using ZFS as
filesystem.
Searching on google I've ridden about some problem concerning indexes and mmap.
I wold like to know if this problem persists on the latest releases.
Thanks in advance.

bind() on 127.0.0.1 in jail: bound to the outside address?
Dear folks,
It seems that doing bind() inside a jail (whose IP address is an outside
address), will result in some wierd behavior, that the actual bind is
done on the outside address.
For example, binding to 127.0.0.1:6666 inside a jail addressed 192.168.1.1,
will finally result in a bind to 192.168.1.1:6666. With this in mind,
it is possible that some formerly secure configuration fail in jail

Reproducible ReInvites sent by UAS after exactly 900s despite session-timers=refuse
Hello!
I'm facing ReInvites as caller from UAS despite configured
session-timers=refuse (which can be seen in the SIP trace) always after
900s. (The behavior is the same if session-timers is set to accept).
This just happens with one provider (German Telekom to callee at kabelbw).
- The incoming ReInvite is answered immediately by asterisk (Status 100
/ Status 200 - 0.02s). Media stream

[PATCH] Tighten /etc/crontab permissions
Hi folks,
While investigating OpenBSD's cron implementation, I found that they set
the systemwide crontab (a.k.a. /etc/crontab) to be readable by the
superuser only. The attached patch will bring this to FreeBSD by moving
crontab out from BIN1 group and install it along with master.passwd.
This change should not affect the current cron(1) behavior.
Cheers,

I'm following the security advisory to patch the cpio vulnerability (update to 6_0_0 RELENG p2, make obj, make depend), yet when it comes to make, it shows some error message as follows:

Opus on MIPS performance
Hi All,
First time poster to this group, please ignore my ignorance?
I?m trying to use Opus 1.1 on a 400MHz MIPS 24k CPU (AR9331, specifically, like in the Arduino Yun).
I?ve successfully built (I think) opus-1.1 and opus-tools-1.8 and they run, but are dog slow.
opus-1.1 does have the ?enable-fixed-point option set, as this chip only has soft-float.
My short test file (less than one

I see. Yes that's the same problem I have seen.
There is a behavioral difference (I think it's a FreeBSD bug) between
FreeBSD's iconv(3) and GNU implementation, and there is arguably a bug
with Dovecot that iconv(3) state should be reset for each multipart
part. The two together would trigger the problem
