NSCD, should it be used or not with LDAP, pam, nss
Again, another confusing issue in two how-to's I'm trying to resolve. In the SBE (samba-3 by example) Pg 161 in the PDF states. (It's actually page 200 of the PDF, but 161 of the numbered document pages.) "The name service caching daemon (nscd) is a primary cause of difficulties with name resolution, particularly where winbind is used." But the Authconfig in the IDEALX

NSCD On Linux Question
I finally ran across the following post: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2006-May/120798.html Turns out my earlier post to this list for help stems from the NSCD problem like this person had. I changed the negative TTLs in nscd.conf to 3s and changed the -t argument to 15 in my add machine script. This solved my join domain problem. Before all this, NSCD was not running. When NSCD is

CentOs6- Use nscd for offline LDAP
Dear All, I'm thinking about connecting the 15 or so laptops in our organisation to LDAP. Now I'm trying to use nscd in order to enable the users to work when being offline. The test laptop is installed for this occasion, updated CentOs6.3. Following the advise I found on a few posts I modified */etc/nscd.conf : * server-user nscd logfile

Problems with Openldap and nscd
The problem description below is relevant for those who use samba + LDAP. We installed four Intel Xeon servers with standard SuSE 8.2, samba + ldap. The W2K client complained about very, very, very slow reponse from the server. Below is we descripe the reasons and the solution. We have big problems with openldap version 2.1.12 (standard suse 8.2 rpm) and the name server cache daemon versiom

nscd segfaulting on centos 4.5
Does anyone know if there is a fix for nscd segfaulting after a short period of time. Googling for it came up with one result that suggested deleting the files in /var/db/nscd , but that didn't help. Another result was about run away processes which is not the problem I'm having. They are x86_64 boxes. output from /var/log/messages Oct 9 12:56:38 lyra kernel: nscd[11660]: segfault at

nscd crashes
I've had problems with nscd crashing every few days on my CentOS 4 mail server for a while now. The problems started maybe around CentOS 4.2, although I don't remember for sure. My debugging efforts let me to disable nscd's persistent cache, and that seemed to work for a while, but since upgrading to CentOS 4.4, the crashes have started again. When nscd crashes, the rest of the

pam_ldap + nscd
Hi, I'd like to use nscd for passwd+group caching. pam_ldap is configured and works (e.g. 'id foo' returns the correct user id if foo is present in ldap). If I start nscd manually (not started by default), 'id foo' returns 'No such user'. As soon as I stop nscd, 'id foo' starts working again. I suspect nscd is only looking at /etc/passwd because 'id

nscd and winbindd
Dear samba folks, I have a special question regarding the simultaneous operation of nscd and winbindd on the same host: We are running in a Samba file server setup where the nsswitch.conf looks like this: passwd: files ldap group: files ldap shadow: files ldap hosts: files dns wins networks: files protocols: db files services: db files

nscd problem
Hi All, I just enabled nscd to see if I can speed up some operations on our large NFS/NIS environment, however, now that I've enabled nscd I am no longer able to sudo. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Everything was working fine prior to enabling it. -- James A. openldap and nscd
Hi, This email is a follow-up to my previous email about "Postfix: user unknown", perhaps these are related. Every time I restart openldap i get an error message from nscd: --- May 15 14:53:02 mail nscd: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable --- This is due to a timeout, correct? Here is part of my /etc/ldap.conf --- timelimit 120

nscd
Has anyone had problems accessing random websites since going up to 6.4? Since about the day after I got partly upgraded, if I try to access nytimes.com, or orbitz.com, I get server not found. With a lot of work, I, my manager, and the other admin, found that setting options edns0 in /etc/resolv.conf fixed it - I suspect that the network folks updated their internal nameservers (which are M$)

nscd, ldap and the root/Administrator account
Hi, I'm using Samba 3 as a PDC with an Openldap backend and also have a number of Samba domain member servers that lookup the ldap directory for their account information. I use ssh to perform various administration tasks. There is an account called Administrator in the LDAP directory that has a UID of 0 . However, after nscd has been started, the next time i login to one of the member

Samba 2.2.8 - authentication and nscd
Hi We have installed and configured Samba 2.2.8 on a Solaris (Sparc) 8 server recently. This server is to replace an existing member server in a NT4 domain and will act as a file server. We want to perform as little user maintenance on the Solaris side as possible so that most of the user setup and maintenance for the domain is controlled through a NT4 server using usrmgr and want to use NT

[PATCH] Don't run new-kernel-pkg or nscd (RHBZ#557262).
This is related to this message I posted yesterday: http://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2010-January/msg00016.html fakechroot doesn't sufficiently contain dracut, which is what was very indirectly causing that problem. However we don't need to run /sbin/new-kernel-package (in the kernel %post script). It takes a long time because dracut is so slow, and it builds an initrd that we

getent/wbinfo and gecos field weird behaviour
Hello there, I'm having a weird behaviour with getent (and by extension winbind using wbinfo) when querying for specific user info. I'm running Samba 3.5.4 in Centos 5.7 (3.5.4-0.83.el5_7.2) with default options, and securty = ads Everything works fine, but now I'm working on some autoemails with reports and I want to get rid of the user names, using user's first / last names
