Clarification on Samba AD functional levels
Hello all,
Does Samba properly support 2012_R2 domains? If so, what is the earliest
version of Samba AD that supports it? I see that the most recent
versions support ad dc functional level = 2012_R2 in smb.conf but I am
unsure if I can safely run 2012_R2 functional level on older versions of
Samba.
A little background:
In my test environment I setup a Samba 4.20 AD Domain Controller with

Hello Marc,
thank you for your answer. I already added gidNumber 513 for the group. Now
I added the two additional attribute for the group. I installed RSAT, and
enabled the necessary modules according to the Samba wiki. I opened AD
users and computers, and Domain Users' properties. When I click on the UNIX
Attributes tab, I get an error: Execution denied. On the panel I see: NIS

Yes I've red this section and the docu is saying no FL above 2008. Might
be caused by incompleted docu? So far I understand if we don't use >4.19
we will not be able to use FL 2016 which is necessary since our DC WIN22
is configured as FL2016?

creating new users - missing uidNumber
I have a script which carefully manages uidNumber and gidNumber attributes
for users and groups. We just recently put it into production. I plan to
release it as open source software soon -- and get Rowland's blessing :-)

If you take a look at:
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows_2012_Server_compatibility
You will find your error message. I think your domain is running with FL
2012 and you are using a samba version < 4.19. So you can only go up to
FL 2008_R2. The new 4.19 is the first version supporting FL >2008_R2.
There you can go up to FL 2016.

So. I've builded 4.19.2 from source. building worked fine and I've
configured like the following:

?? ?--sysconfdir=/etc/samba \
?? ?--mandir=/usr/share/man \
?? ?--systemd-install-services \
?? ?--with-systemddir=/lib/systemd/system \
?? ?--enable-selftest \
?? ?--disable-cups

Default Samba version in Debian Bookworm
Hi folks,
I have tried to get some information about what Samba version will be
the default one when Debian Bookworm gets released, but without luck.
Will it be 4.17, or 4.18? Or even 4.19.x? Will there be Samba backports
for Bookworm?
I saw a post from Michael Tokarev in this list a while ago, that there
probably wont be a Samba 4.18 for Debian Bullseye. I also saw another
post about

Question about silos and Authentication policies
I was playing around again with Windows and when you add members to
silos, or remove them, it should not set/unset assigned silo on the user.
So I've got a new pull request in Draft state still where I remove that
functionality, as well as add some new commands to samba-tool user command.
It turned out to be easier to add sub commands to user, as edit user
wasn't quite what I thought

using the DC as a file Server in AD
You'll get problems with file permissions.
I've learned that you won't be able to just give a user access to a file without also giving him read access to every folder, down from the root of the share, that the file is located in. Example: You can't give accounting access to \\samba\IT\management\budget.ods without also giving them rights to \\samba\IT and \\samba\IT\management.
