mount -u -r drops nosuid ?
Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but it seems like potential
security risk: I have a ufs fs mounted rw+nosuid, then I needed to
downgrade it to ro, so I executed mount -u -r on it - imagine my surpise
when I found that nosuid flag was removed as well. I know I could have
used mount -u -r -o nosuid, but the present behavior seems to be
non-obvious (update one flag, orthogonal flags dropped

rc.firewall: default loopback rules are set up even for custom file
I've just realized that I see in releng/7 something that I did not see
in releng/6 - even if I use a file with custom rules in firewall_type I
still get default loopback rules installed.
I think that this is not correct, I am using custom rules exactly
because I want to control *everything* (e.g. all deny rules come with
log logamount xxx).

How to disable XFree86 and wdm listening ports
Hello,
what is the right way to disable XFree86 and wdm listening
ports tcp 6000 and tcp 1024.
I read in man XFree86 about the -nolisten tcp option
and tried to set in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp
but it was not successful.
What is the right way to close the ports without use of IPFW?
Your help would be appreciated.
Thank?s

Error on DomU with xencons=ttyS
Hi all,
I have a question on /etc/inittab for DomU booted with xencons parameter.
I saw the following error messages when I appended xencons=ttyS to DomU
boot option.

nfs umount soft hang
I have an NFS server and NFS client separated by a firewall. Both
servers are FreeBSD 7.1.
Server configuration:
nfs_server_enable="YES"
nfs_server_flags="-t -n 4"
rpcbind_enable="YES"
mountd_flags="-r -p 737"
mountd_enable="YES"
The firewall allows tcp and udp to port 111, but only tcp to ports 2049
and 737 (configured for mountd, see above).

CentOS 6: /etc/init/start-ttys.conf ignored
hi
why are tty3-tty6 started after this config change?
i would like to have only tty1 finally becasue on a virtual machine
there is no need for the other processes since CTRL+ALT+Fx is caught
by the own system and remote console mostly not needed at all

mouse problems [A4 Tech OP-3D]
After some poking into psm.c code I've got some results.
First, for the archives, debug.psm.loglevel tunable is much more useful
than a verbose boot for debugging PS/2 mouse issues. A good value is 2.
Second, I fiddled with various probe methods to force them to
"recognize" my mouse (by loosening their checks) and found out that the
mouse works perfectly if it is treated as

Trouble getting all my com-ports (ttyS*)
I just installed CentOS 5.1 on a Dell Vostro 200 (Intel G33) which has a
Sunix PCI-Express (x1) 8-port RS-232 card installed. For me it looks
like only 4 ports are recognized, but I'm not sure if it's even working
with those 4.

Programs run over ssh aren't getting real ttys.
I use OpenSSH on a number of machines. If I connect to most of my
machines and open a bash shell the first three file descriptors of
bash are something like /dev/pts/6. On these machines OpenSSH is as
good as a "real" terminal.
However, I am putting together an embedded system and I must minimize
the size of the installed system. I have OpenSSH working on this
system but, when I connect

Launching X-Windows at different runelvels
Hi all,
I need to launch X-Windows at runlevel 4 and 5. CentOS only start up x-windows
at runlevel by default. I have modified /etc/inittab to accomplish this:
x:4:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
But this returns errors every time that start and stop system ... Which is the
correct form to launch x-windows under centos at different runlevels??

sio => uart: one port is gone
This is a fairly standard and old machine with 2 COM ports.
Recently (last Friday) I decided to update my RELENG_7 system and also
to transition from sio to uart.
This what I had before the upgrade:

0x10 on acpi0
kernel: sio0: type 16550A

gdm doesnt work.
Try this:
/etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service -> /usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service
Only in your case it would be gdm.service.

ipsec vs. broadcast
Maybe this is already fixed in the newer code, I am still on 5.2.1 and
have a problem with traffic that originally goes to a broadcast ip
address but then gets encrypted by ipsec and should go into a tunnel but
when it is sent it has ethernet broadcast flag. Just to be clear:
traffic originates on the same host which is a tunnel endpoint.
It looks to me that a fix could be as simple as clearing

ARC/VM question
I have a semi-theoretical question about the following code in arc.c,
arc_reclaim_needed() function:
/*
* take ''desfree'' extra pages, so we reclaim sooner, rather than later
*/
extra = desfree;
/*
* check that we''re out of range of the pageout scanner. It starts to
* schedule paging if freemem is less than lotsfree and needfree.
* lotsfree is the high-water mark

Now that we have very convenient -C option for fsck, maybe we could use it in

mystery: lock up after fs dump
I wouldn't report this if not for one coincidence (which is described
below). I have too little facts, so this is more of a mystery problem
tale than a real problem report.
There are two systems:
1. old, slow, i386, UP, 7-STABLE
2. new, fast, amd64, MP, 6.3-RELEASE
Systems are located at different physical locations.
What is common between them:
1. they both have the same backup strategy
