Design changes are done in Fedora
I am a newcomer to CentOS and I appreciate the discussion. It would seem to me - and I am sure I am not the first one to state the obvious - Fedora is primarily a desktop OS while CentOS is primarily a server OS.
The user needs are very different, the features needed are very, very different, hence many of the current features, or future features, should remain in one or the other and not cross

Has Rails 2.1.0 changed the loading precedence? Does it now use a gem in
preference to a plugin if both are available?

Testing helper methods in rspec
This is perhaps a naive question, but what is the recommended manner of
testing a helper method in rspec? I have created a simple string manipulation
function and I want to write some tests for it. It it were a script then I
would just add if __FILE__ == $0 and add the tests below that but I do not
feel that this is the best way to handle a rails helper.
The code (I said it was simple) :

rspec and rspec-rails install hell
I am attending a training course covering rspec. I am using a MS WinXPpro SP3
machine. I have installed the cygwin environment. I am using git 1.5.4. I am
using ruby 1.8.6 (2007-09-24 patchlevel 111) [i386-mswin32] and rails 2.0.2
(albeit rails 2.1.0 is installed as well)
I had to install rspec-rails and rspec via git and as a gem.
Problem 1.
If one goes to the rspec.info website and links

Ruby-1.8.7
I have a situation wherein the version of SQLite-3 on

adapter to successfully build against. I managed to
obtain an rpm for ruby-1.8.7 but I cannot find one for
sqlite-3.6.16 or later. Does anyone here have a lead on
where such a beast, including the sqlite development
headers,

samab-4.10 nsupdate
I changed the entries in smb4.conf (smb.conf) to this:
[global]
. . .
dns update command = /usr/local/sbin/samba_dnsupdate
nsupdate command = /usr/local/bin/samba-nsupdate -d -g
And this is what results when I run: samba_dnsupdate --verbose -d8 --all-names
. . .
update(nsupdate): SRV

Two ftp clients? Why?
I had a problem wherein running a script with an embedded ftp call
would work in the login shell during integration testing and then
fail with an unrecognized option error in cron during acceptance
testing.
In solving this I discovered that RedHat, and therefore CentOS,
ships with at least two ftp clients, /usr/bin/ftp ( which I thought
I was using ) and /usr/kerberos/bin/ftp, which I actually

Why does freebsd put these things in /usr/local/etc/? Some questions have
answers that are not worth the effort to know.

NTP and virtual guests
We encountered a problem with respect to KVM virtual host restore and
NTP. Specifically, our VM test host was shutdown by an extended power
outage and when power returned all of the restored guests were
immediately shutdown by ntp because the time differential between the
restored systems and that of the ntpd sync servers exceeded the panic
threshold.
This is not an acceptable situation so in the

DNS configuration problem
I have introduced some error in my dns resolution and I would like
some help fixing it as I cannot seem to detect what I have done
wrong. Briefly the setup is this:
name servers:
DNS01 - 216.185.71.33
DNS02 - 209.47.176.33
DNS03 - 216.185.71.34
DNS04 - 209.47.176.34 - offline
DNS01 is a master
DNS02-04 are slaves of 216.185.71.33
All are listed as authoritative for the zone test.com
