putting a running app into trace mode
Suppose I have a USDT probe in Firefox and that I''m trying to catch the startup with a probe like this: proc:::exec-success /execname == "firefox-bin"/ { start = timestamp; } and stop tracing when Firefox hits this USDT probe: mozilla:::main-entry { exit(0); } How do I put the running firefox-bin into "trace mode" so that my USDT probe fires? Thanks, Joel

dtrace overhead and proper measuring technique
I''m trying to time a function within Firefoxwith a pid$target probe [2]. e.g dtrace -Zqw -x dynvarsize=64m -x evaltime=preinit -p 13954 -s menu- construct.d -s sigcont.d elapsed: 12.7942481ms cpu : 7.7911194ms count : 40 times I''m also measuring Firefox startup time by running it arguments like this: ... file:///Users/joelr/work/mozilla/startup/startup.html#`python

use tracemem to dump content in function read/write
Hi Expert I want to use dtrace to monitor the content change of one file. I made following scripts, #!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s inline int MYPID = $1; syscall::write:entry /pid == MYPID/ { tracemem(arg1, arg2); printf("\n"); } It always has an following error bash-3.00$ sudo dumpFIFO.dtrace 3836 dtrace: failed to compile script ./dumpFIFO.dtrace: line 19: tracemem( ) argument #2

Using dapptrace. Can't seem to trace user functions with defaults or specifying -u<lib>
Hi Folks, I''m trying to get to grips with dapptrace, running it on my Mac. Everything seems pretty straightforward, except for - of course - what I''m trying to do. I want to focus in on my code but I can''t seem to be able to output just the functions I want, i.e. user functions. The -U option gives everything. Too much of course. Leaving that blank means the

ustack()s of SIGSEGV''ed programs
Hi all, I am trying to write a D script which would print ustack() for every program in the system receiving SIGSEGV. All the stacks printed in trap()/sigtoproc() context do not have meaningful symbols. The following solves the problem to some degree but I''d much rather have a self-contained D script. dtrace -w -n ''fbt:genunix:sigtoproc:entry/arg2 == 11/ {

2 iosnoop scripts: different results
I am teaching a DTrace class and a student noticed that 2 iosnoop scripts run in two different windows were producing different results. I was not able to answer why this is. Can anyone explain this. Here are the reults from the two windows: # io.d ... sched 0 <none> 1024 dad1 W 0.156 bash 1998

hotuser and hotkernel
G''Day Folks, While I have a few minutes online (which is rare at the moment - travel), let me post about a couple of new scripts. I''ve just uploaded them to http://www.brendangregg.com/dtrace.html. They are to profile user-level functions and libaries; and kernel-level functions and modules. They sample, rather than trace (which can be both good and bad). Here is hotuser

Dtrace starts very slowly on T5440
Hi all, We just got a shiny new T5440, and one of the first things I noticed (besides the insane number of hardware contexts), is that dtrace takes 30 seconds to a minute to fire up scripts with 5-6 probes, where our T5220 usually takes under a second. Shutdown is similar, though slightly faster. This is mostly annoying because it takes so long to attach that it''s hard to tell when

Solaris Dynamic Tracing Guide gets Wikified!
Tracers, Good news! The Solaris Dynamic Tracing Guide has entered the participation age at last and has been converted into wiki format. The new and shiny guide can be found at: http://wikis.sun.com/display/DTrace/Documentation The guide has fallen behind with developments in DTrace since it was first released and needs some revising and some bug fixing as well. However, now that it''s

dtracing a forked process OR dynamic library
Hi, I am tracking down a problem and would like to know how I can follow a forked process with my dtrace script, or how I can trace a dynamic library. Here is the problem. I am tracing dtlogin, and specifically I am trying to determine what error libpkcs11`<routine> is returning. It turns out dtlogin forks a lot of processes, and I believe the second forked process is the one that winds

[LLVMdev] global variable
Hi all, I am newbie for llvm. I just create a global variable, there are some statements in my pass like: LoadInst* int64_64 = new LoadInst(pthreadPID, "", false, OptAplusOne); int64_64->setAlignment(8); int64_64->dump(); LoadInst* int32_65 = new LoadInst(gvar_int32_myFlag, "", false, OptAplusOne); int32_65->setAlignment(4);

Passing arguments to forked children
Hi - I have attempted to use the fork::fork() function to perform parallel processing. However, the child R function called needs to know a given set of parameters to complete its task. Specifically, I iterate through a vector, and output values based on the elements of that vector to a database. The output strings contain elements of the iterated vector. I mocked-up the following code as an

Determining Parent''s execname
Hi, I''m trying to trace the io of a given file, but I have a feeling that it''s been done via a script, as such I''d like to be able to tell the names of the calling processe tree, similar to what ptree produces. Is there any way to get this information without running ptree using system()? Thanks, Darren.

dtrace missing ''unlinkat''? showing process stack?
everyone, Just out of curiosity, I did a dtrace -n ''syscall:::entry { @num[execname, probefunc] = count(); }'' and looked at the entries produced by ''rm''. I see everything that rm did, *except* the unlinkat - which is unfortunate because I want to trace which processes have deleted which files. So - does dtrace contain unlinkat as a probe for a system call?

Request: Optimum value of cost complexity parameter "k" in "tree" package
Dear R community I have a question regarding the value of cost complexity parameter "k" used in "tree" package for pruning purpose. Any help in finding the optimum value of "k" is requested. Please give some suggestion in this regard. In the example below i used k=0 but i don't know why? But if i use k=NULL, then it will not plot the resultant tree.

Syslinux 2.10 does not load initrd anymore
Hello all, I just installed syslinux 2.10 on my usb-stick. It still boots then, but doesn't load initrd.gz (same config file..). Reverting back to syslinux 2.09 works fine, eg: initrd.gz is loaded. Something changed in initrd handling code? greetz, Jaap Crezee NB I am willing to share you more information or hints how to solve the problem. I am using kernel 2.6.7-bk20

SIGTRAP in Xcode
I downloaded and built the Ogg and Vorbis projects and added the frameworks to my project. It just SIGTRAPs before reaching main, in dylib loading code. I then built libvorbis.a, libvorbisenc.a, libvorbisfile.a and added them to my project. Still SIGTRAPs. I built a libogg.a target from scratch in the Ogg project, and added libogg.a, still SIGTRAPs. So I have tried everything I know

When does ufunc/func work?
I''m trying to profile the time spent in libc functions in a large build job (building Perl), and I have trouble getting ufunc and func working. (func() is not strictly needed; I was just hoping to use it in order to profile idle time.) Here''s the story. I''ve written a dtrace script to start a separate dtrace process for each invoked command: int fileid;
