I/O bottleneck Root cause identification w Dtrace ?? (controller or IO bus)
Dtrace and Performance Teams,
I have the following IO Performance Specific Questions (and I''m already
savy with the lockstat and pre-dtrace
utilities for performance analysis.. but in need of details regarding
specifying IO bottlenecks @ the controller or IO bus..) :
**Q.A*> Determining IO Saturation bottlenecks ( */.. beyond service
times and kernel contention.. )/

opensolaris dtrace page has bad link to dtrace documentation
The open solaris dtrace page (http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/dtrace/) has a bad link to the DTrace Guide(http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-6223).

Is there any way to check if DTrace is running or a DTrace probe is enabled?
Hi,
I am adding DTrace probes within NFS v3 client. In my current
implementation, I use some tsd_*() functions and kmem_zalloc() function.
These functions might be heavy and affect the performance. I want to
call this function only when DTrace is running or the DTrace probes are
enable. So is there a way to check DTrace is running or DTrace probe is
enabled?

Dtrace Snooping
Dear dtrace Experts,
I have seen some dtrace utilities like opensnoop and execsnoop etc.
My interest is to write a simple script that can snoop the files which
uses the 3 syscalls like open,create,unlink.
I have gone through dtrace oneliners that can do the same :
dtrace -n ''syscall::open*:entry { printf("%s %s",execname,copyinstr(arg0));}''
dtrace -n

DTrace unconference?
All,
With Jon Haslam''s exciting news about the DTrace doc wiki (if you haven''t
seen it yet, make your way to http://wikis.sun.com/display/DTrace), and with
some of the discussion with the Apple folks, I''m wondering if the time
isn''t right for something of a DTrace summit, perhaps as an unconference.
The idea here would not be a DTrace user group (though that

Dtrace scripts for performance data gathering
I am looking for Dtrace scripts that can be used to
collect data during performance tests. I am especially
interested in IO but CPU, memory, threads, etc are needed
as well.
Thanks,
Dave

variables in dtrace scripts
Greetings,
is there a way to specify probes and other dtrace operations via command
line parameters, like
"
BEGIN
{
usr_exec=$$1;
usr_syscall=$$2;
}
syscall::usr_syscall:entry
/execname == usr_exec && guard++ == 0/
{
...
"
[this does not work]
This would make it possible to create "generic" dtrace scripts.
Otherwise, some shellscript with sed-magic would

DTrace typewriter
G''Day Folks,
I''ve found another use of dtrace, this makes your console keyboard
sound like a typewriter.
http://www.brendangregg.com/DTrace/typewriter-0.70.tar.gz
I''ve only tested it on an UltraSPARC 5 and a Pentium laptop so far, more
to follow.
Ok, sorry, not actually a practical use of DTrace. :)
Enjoy!

Why dtrace doesn''t work on some workstation?
Dtrace does work on some workstation, such as as follows,

bash-3.00# uname -a

invalid probe specifier nge::entry: "/usr/lib/dtrace/procfs.d"
I recently did a backport of a couple of networking bug fixes from s10x_u4_b6 to s10x_u3_b10. I patched just /platform/i86pc/kernel/unix and /platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix in my existing u3 OS image and I''m seeing this dtrace problem when running any dtrace script:
NODE hcb101 ~ $ ./tcpstat.sh

boot-time dtrace
Hi,
I am using anon dtrace followed with normal dtrace to collect the data
of all fork,exec,exit .
I found that dtrace could not be able to collect all the data. Lot of
pids are missing.
This happence when we boot the system and expect dtrace to collect all
the fork , exec & exit it collects data but not all the pids are collected.
Any inputs in this regard will be of great help.
thanks

Passing arguments to program started by dtrace?
Hi all,
I''m trying to run dtrace -c on a program that takes command-line arguments... is there any way to tell dtrace where its args let off and the target''s begin, or will I have to write a shell script that checks for ''--'' or some such?
Thanks,
Ryan

Dtrace and java 1.5
Hi,
I have used dtrace in the past for diagnosing IO/filesystem related issues.
So I am a bit familiar with dtrace scripts
Now I want to diagnose performance problems in the java area.
May be memory leak etc.
The hotspot provider is not present.
How can I get them?
Does someone have any further advice?
regards Hans

Dtrace script compilation error.
Hi All,
One of the customer is seeing the following error messages.
He is using a S10U1 system with all latest patches.
Dtrace script is attached.
I am not seeing these error messages on S10U2 system.
What could be the problem?
Thanks,
Gangadhar.

autoconf test for building dtrace USDT probes?
X.Org has adopted GNU autoconf as its build configuration mechanism,
so when I integrated the dtrace probes, I checked to see if they
should be built using this test, checking for the existence of a
program named "dtrace" in the path:
dnl Check for dtrace program (needed to build Xserver dtrace probes)

dtrace reports different counts depending on what is being traced
We are using following dtrace script to analyze an application. However
we see different number of lwp_yield and yield calls reported depending
on whether we trace mutex_lock or mutex_unlock or not. The number
reported when we are not tracing mutex_lock or mutex_unlock is higher.
What could be going on here and which one is the correct number. This is
on S10 U2.
Thanks,
Rao.
