How do I reset rails in production mode on DreamHost?
Hello! I am testing rails on DreamHost. I believe it''s running on apache. In development mode, it ran very slowly. So I changed it into production mode and switched to fcgi. It''s very fast now. But the problem is that if I add actions to a controller, it''s not applied. I know that in production mode, I need to restart web server. But I don''t control the web

Rails, FCGI, Dreamhost
Is anybody getting acceptable performance with a Rails application on Dreamhost? By this, I mean response times no greater than 3 seconds, and no large numbers of FCGI processes that you have to kill manually. If so, how? I''ve ended up running a constant ping script (once every ten minutes), and still have to kill some number of excess dispatch.fcgi processes every day. Along with

capistrano and Dreamhost issue
Hi, i''m striving to capistranize a foo app on DH. Everything is hosted on DH to simplify a bit : - svn repository (http access) - the application - the DB I used the recipe of Jamis Buck modified by Geoffrey Grosenbach which you can find here : http://nubyonrails.com/pages/shovel_dreamhost I did the least modifications possible. As recommended. 1) When I launch the

404 Error on dispatch.fcgi
I''m a java/php programmer trying out Ruby/Rails on my Dreamhost account. I followed the wiki steps to the letter (2x now) and am still getting a 404 when I hit my dispatch.fcgi. http://mydomain.com/public/dispatch.fgci Can someone give me suggestions on how to debug this problem? Here is my dispatch.fcgi file: #!/usr/bin/env ruby # # You may specify the path to the FastCGI crash log

FCGI and the never ending saga of deploying on Dreamhost
I''m trying to setup an app on Dreamhost and running into no end of problems. The app is running with edge rails and I''m currently getting the dreaded ''Rails application failed to start'' white screen when trying to access it. I''ve gone through all the ''gotchas'' and troubleshooting docs at Dreamhost and the rails wiki to no avail.

Dreamhost FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) errors
Sorry to trouble the list with another Dreamhost problem, but looking through the archives I see nothing that can solve my problem. I have installed my app as per http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Ruby_on_Rails#Quick_Start_Guide_August_2006 with a symbolic link from my_domain.tld in ~/ to ~/apps/residence/public/ I get the Rails welcome screen. I have uploaded my app directory etc, and

Rails, FCGI, DreamHost, and endless frustrations
Hi all! I''m trying to deploy an application out to a subdomain at dreamhost. I am getting the dreaded "Rails application failed to start properly" error. The logs for my app are empty. In the DreamHost FTP app, when I look in the error.log file (I''m guessing this the Apache error log file) I see the following for each of my attempts: [Sun Jul 16 12:36:32 2006]

Hi, Just trying to get Capistrano working to Dreamhost. I''m hitting a permissions issue on the reaper file at the moment. Has anyone a copy of the capistrano DEPLOY.RB file they could post or send me a copy of please? Thanks Greg -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

fcgi_watch (reaper replacement for shared servers)
fcgi_watch is a supplement to (or replacement for) <rails_app>/script/process/reaper. The standard reaper script searches for all processes started with a given pathname using the output from a ps command, and performs an action on them. There are problems with this approach, at least on some shared servers: - The pathname seen from a script is not necessarily the same as the

Runaway FCGI Processes with Debian, Apache
Hi all. There is an issue with Rails, FastCGI and Apache2 on Debian that I''ve been dealing with since I started Rails development in late 2005. I''ve developed various workarounds but have not been able to solve the problem at the root. Every so often, for reasons I''ve never been able to determine, a load of dispatch.fcgi processes get spawned and take over my whole

How to restart server programmatically?
I need to be able to restart my server based on a specific database change. I''ve been trying a call to system("script/process/reaper -a graceful -d dispatch.fcgi") but that raises a transaction error which rolls back the save. I wasn''t aware that after_save would rollback. That''s potentially useful but pretty much not right now. Here''s my code: def

When is a site too small for Rails?
Hey, folks. Mainly, I''m looking for some guidance here. A couple months ago the buzz around Rails become too much for me, and I finally decided to give in and learn the framework. This was all very new to me -- most of my focus in the past couple years has been solely in design with static XHTML + CSS. I dabbled in PHP, but nothing significant. Well, I love Rails, and it

Forcing FCGI at dreamhost
Greetings all, I''ve got an app in production at dreamhost, but I can''t seem to force FCGI on it. I have it enabled for the domain in the admin panel, have checked the file permissions in my public folder, and tried firing the scripts from the command line. When firing either dispatch.cgi, or dispatch.fcgi from the command line, I get a 500 internal server error on BOTH.

fcgi_watch update
I''ve updated fcgi_watch to version 0.3.1. There''s no real functional difference, but I fixed a bug that caused it to report multiple copies of the same FCGI process as "running" under certain conditions. The updated version is here: http://www.alevans.com/dl/fcgi_watch-0.3.1.tgz For those just tuning in: fcgi_watch is a supplement to (or replacement for)

restarting fastCGI process
Hi, I am very new to this so please go easy on me... I am trying to deploy my app on dreamhost and I seem to be having problems getting it working. One of the troubleshooting items on the wiki states: Rails apps in production mode do not reflect changes made after they start running. So, if you found a bug, fixed it and nothing appeared to happen--this is probably because you

Capistrano /usr/bin/env: ruby: no such file or directory
Hi, I''m deploying to a prod linux server via Capistrano, but the last step, running the reaper, won''t complete. Ruby is stored in /usr/local/bin on the server, and I''m deploying from winxp. $ ssh mcalogin@lx07 Password: mcalogin@LX07:~> env | grep "^PATH" PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/b in:/opt/

switchtower, windows and dispatch.fcgi
I just setup switchtower and I am very happy with it. Just one thing is giving me some headache: My development machine is windows and my deployment host is Unix. Each time I deploy I need to make dispatch.fcgi executable. I wrote my own task for that. But does there exist any smarter way to get this automated ? I think Subversion offers some possiblity to declare a file as executable, but no idea
