hotuser and hotkernel
G''Day Folks, While I have a few minutes online (which is rare at the moment - travel), let me post about a couple of new scripts. I''ve just uploaded them to http://www.brendangregg.com/dtrace.html. They are to profile user-level functions and libaries; and kernel-level functions and modules. They sample, rather than trace (which can be both good and bad). Here is hotuser

Variable mpid - what is it?
DTraceToolkit has a dtrace script (Proc/pidpersec.d) that refers to a variable mpid as below profile:::tick-1sec { printf("%-22Y %8d %6d\n", walltimestamp, `mpid, pids); pids = 0; } Where is `mpid getting picked from (it isn''t declared anywhere else)? What does the character ` in `mpid signify? I do not see any reference to this variable in the dtrace

Dtrace queries - predicates & func arg tracing
[1] Predicates in one-liners I would like to list the probe modules in my executable and then dynamically create a dscript to trace execution of those modules alone (by excluding the 3rd party and system libraries). I tried the below script without success. The conditional given in the predicate is not taking effect. Why is this so ? $ dtrace -ln ''pid$target:::

Oracle 9 process on Sol 10 container, doing a pollsys, using high CPU
We''re running a Solaris 10 container, with an Oracle 9.2.0.4 database - every 5-10 min, an Oracle process shoots up (using 20% + CPU) and then goes down in CPU %, doing a pollsys (see it via dtruss). I tried using some of the trace scripts in the Dtracetoolkit to see what the process is doing, but without any luck - also tried with the following, but dtrace process goes up to 30%

LatencyTop
I see Intel has released a new tool. Oh, it requires some patches to the kernel to record latency times. Good thing people don''t mind patching their kernels, eh? So who can write the equivalent latencytop.d the fastest? ;-) http://www.latencytop.org/ -- cburgess at qnx.com

DTraceTools Update
Is there any work on keeping DTraceTools up to date with the latest snv builds. These scripts are pretty useful and help get a novice dtrace user like me doing useful work quickly. Specifically the tcp stack tools like tcptop and tcpsnoop don''t work with later OpenSolaris builds. Thanks, Gary -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Aggregation elements
Howdy, Is there a method to get the number of elements in an aggregation? Are the results stored in an aggregation guaranteed to be in any type of order? Thanks for any insight, - Ryan -- UNIX Administrator http://daemons.net/~matty

failed to resolve SS_TCP_FAST_ACCEPT
Folks, I came across an IPv6 snv_31 network driver problem during testing. I can "ping" an IPv6 address, but when I try and log on to the IPv6 address I get an RPC failure. Not knowing much about dtrace, I thought I would give some of the networking dtrace scripts a try that I found here: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/dtrace/dtracetoolkit/ (tcptop or any other script in the

expected system load from DTrace scripts/probes
Does anyone out there have any thoughts on the type of load common DTrace scripts would cause on a system if run 24x7? I know "common DTrace scripts" and their underlining probe calls a vague statement. So for the lack of a common and establish set of scripts in the OS, I''ll use the most popular right for my question...the DTraceToolkit from Brendan Gregg. Which by the

Why could I get function names from a stripped exec?
Hello, all experts. When I use pid provider, my Dscript with -F option output the codepath with flowindent as you know, e.g. -> main -> f1 -> f2 however I realized that the exec file I used at that time was stripped. Does anyone know the reason why I could see the function names? Thanks in advance. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

How can I watch IO operations with dtrace on zfs?
I have been using iosoop script (see http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/dtrace/scripts/) written by Brendan Gregg to look at the IO operations of my application. When I was running my test-program on a UFS filesystem I could see both read and write operations like: UID PID D BLOCK SIZE COMM PATHNAME 203803 4436 R 6016592 16384 diskio <none> 203803 4436 W 3448432

truncating aggregation output only
Hello dtrace-discuss, Sometimes I want to run a script for some time and every n second output N top entries. trunc() isn''t suitable here as it also removed keys/values. I want it ''coz over time if I use sum() entries which are normally truncated can actually get to top over a time. Maybe printa() extension, something like: printa(@b[10]) - to output top 10? --

ZIL FOID
I need some clarification on the FOID handed to zil_commit. I wrote a dscript to watch entry and return of zil_commit_writer. Here is an example output: <pre> 2009 Jan 23 23:34:36: ZIL Commit : Seq 183211310 : FOID 129644 Completed in 0 ms 2009 Jan 23 23:34:36: ZIL Commit : Seq 183211324 : FOID 129644 Completed in 0 ms 2009 Jan 23 23:34:36: ZIL Commit : Seq 183211386

NFS/ZFS performance problems - txg_wait_open() deadlocks?
Hi. System is snv_56 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440, zil_disable=1 We see many operation on nfs clients to that server really slow (like 90 seconds for unlink()). It''s not a problem with network, there''s also plenty oc CPU available. Storage isn''t saturated either. First strange thing - normally on that server nfsd has about 1500-2500 number of threads. printa stddev error
Hi, Searched for similar errors and nothing came up. Anybody know what this is? When using aggregate stddev, and then trying to print it at END, using printa, I get this error: dtrace: processing aborted: Invalid return value from callback avg works fine. Tried on two recent builds of solaris (build 89 and build 94), on two difference sparc systems. Here''s a sample script:

why dtrace is not quiet?
i''m running the following script: #pragma D option quiet profile:::tick-1sec / ++x >= 15 / { exit(0); } io:::start { @io_size[execname] = sum(args[0]->b_bcount); } on exit, the script prints out the value of @io_size, why? there''s no printa(), and i also specified "D option quiet" (i also tried -q). this seems to happen with any kind of probe: on exit(0) all
