newbie question on installation over existing Linux

I'm using both Solaris and FreeBSD quite extensively and, honestly,
have never heard of that assumption. In fact, on the machine that I'm
currently typing this message on, the file systems look like this:
# uname -sr; mount -t ufs
FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE
/dev/da0s1a on / (ufs, local,

Hello,
I have a RAID-6 Partition with the Areca ARC-1231 card on a S5000PAL
Intel system with 6 disks as part of the raid volume. The system has
been set up as Write-back cache and the raid card has a 2 GIG memory
cache on it. It is installed on Freebsd 7.0 STABLE with SCHED_ULE enabled.
I have a folder with a lot of small and big files in it that total
3009 files. In the user system we

Hi folks,
I've to create a dir (/usr/local/samba/server) for win users (group
@test), and I've to simulate a dir quota (50-55Gb) on my freebsd
system.
These are my steps:
1. kernel with 'options QUOTA'
2. rc.conf with enable_quotas="YES" and check_quotas="YES"
3. fstab: /dev/da0s1f /usr

Sep 21 08:57:54 belle fsck: /dev/ad4s1d: UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix
whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean?
Thanks,

mismatching vinum configurations
Hi,
I had a power failure, and the on-disk configuration for vinum went
bizarre. The logs read from disks are at http://biaix.org/pk/debug/
(log.$DEVICE files). The logs in da0 (barracuda) are the ones obviously
wrong, I'm pretty sure the others are ok. Is this a 'virtually' dead
drive? Can I force vinum to use the other's drive configuration? What's
the less traumatic

6.0-REL problems with ISA ed0, FFS corruption and ancient hardware
[ Asked on -questions on Friday; re-asking now on -stable without
cross-post]
I recently upgraded a 4.11-REL machine to 6.0-REL and have run into some
snags. While the installation from CD went fine, after configuring and
enabling my ed0 NIC, bad things start to happen.
FWIW, this machine is an ancient (hardware circa 1991, BIOS circa 1994)
dual-Pentium 133 MHz machine, with EISA/PCI and

Dynamic bandwidth control on htb
Hi,
I ve implemented htb queues for some ports on my computer by
filtering. when creating queues at very first, i defined rate and ceil
values (and made them equal to have a constant bw).
How can i change dynamically after this, to increase or decrease bw
then? Is there any way to do this?
I would be glad, if anyone could help me..

AHC Panic
I've finally been able to capture the panic, as now it occurs even with DDB
configured. Of the six machines I have running 6.1-RC (CVSupped today),
this is the only one that does this.

Bug#569843: logcheck-database: acpid filter misses trailing white space
Package: logcheck-database
Version: 1.2.69
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
The syslog messages for acpid when a window client connects
or disconnect all have a trailing single space at each line.
Therefore the existing two patterns in
/etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/acpid
fail to filter out the events. Furthermore, the disconnect
message includes a PID-numbered client, which is not present

ad0: READ command timeout....
This morning I found a frozen box. On the console was this:
ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting
ata0: resetting devices .. ata0-slave: ATA identify retries exceeded
done
After reboot, those messages were found in /var/log/messages.
I'm running FreeBSD 4.8-RC from Apr 4 10:45:49 EST 2003.
Any ideas?

FreeBSD 7-STABLE, isp(4), QLE2462: panic & deadlocks
Hello everybody,
we recently got three Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with Qlogic
QLE2462 cards (dual FC 4Gbps ports) and an EMC CLARiiON CX3-40 SAN.
The servers with the FC cards were successfully and extensively
tested with an older SUN StorEdge T3 SAN.
However, when we connect them to the CX3-40, create and mount a new
partition and then do something as simple as "tar -C /san -xf

Crash dump in umount
Hello.
I'm having a 4.7Rp9 server which is since months quite unstable, so I've compiled a debug kernel and got a crash dump.
I'm a programmer and I know a little how to use gdb, I'm not so expert about FreeBSD kernel insides however, so I can't
get much from it. Any kind of help is appreciated.
This is the crash message:
