Fast clock under VMWare
Hi everyone, I have been struggling with having the clock of Linux VM's (including CentOS 4.6 and 5.1) running very fast under VMWare, no matter what I have tried. My platform: - AMD Turion X2 TL-60 - AMD 690 chipset with integrated Radeon x1250 (probably doesn't concern in this case) - Windows Vista Ultimate x64, all Windows Update patches loaded (no SP1 yet) - 4GB RAM - VMWare

ntp on kvm
We've noticed our fully-virtualized KVM guests' time keeps getting faster, despite running ntpd. A quick google reveals this to be a known problem with virtual guests. It seems there are a variety of solutions, some apparently vendor-specific. What is the best practice as of now for KVM guests? * Setting independent_wallclock=1 (or is that a xen-only thing)? * Passing kernel

timekeeping on VMware guests
Howdy, I am having time-drift issues on my CentOS VM. I had referred to following documentation: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/VMWare_Server , however it didn't help. I used kickstart for creating this VM and I am listing important steps in ref to timekeeping issue. Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated. - CS. ------------------- # For EL5 virtual machines, Append the

Migrating from KVM to XEN - kernel panic
First let me say that I'm not a sysadmin, but am simply wearing that hat this week so please excuse my ignorance. I need to temporarily move some virtual servers from a CentOS-KVM platform to a CentOS-XEN platform while I do some upgrades to the CentOS box. I've created a local LV, and used DD and SCP to transfer the block device from the VKM machine to the XEN machine. For quite a

VMware and Time moved backwards
Hi, I followed the discussions regarding the "time moved backward" problem and the use of ntp in such cases. At our department we are running two dovecot servers within an vmware server environment, and unfortunately the timedrift (with ntpd active) exceeds sometimes up to 30 minutes virtual drift within 10 minutes realtime (mostly into future). This is due to some overcorrections

Follow-up on Fast clock under VMWare
Hi everyone: Just a follow up on the fast clock issue: "Can you double-check that 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq' outputs the same number as your 'cpuKHZ' setting in your config.ini file?" There is no cpufreq directory under /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0; all I see is "cache" (dir), "crash_notes" (a file) and

[PATCH 1/2] lguest: handle dodgy/non-existent TSC. Host code.
Lguest currently requires a TSC, which breaks older machines and Matt Mackall who boots the host with "notsc". In addition, there is no good solution to changing TSC speeds (informing all the guests about the TSC impending change before it happens would be a great deal of code and have issues with disobedient guests). This patch makes the host determine if the TSC is both constant and

tick divider bugs
Hi all, If you are using the kernel divider= option in your vmware quest, you are probably aware of the bugs reported at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=315471 Someone @redhat "confirmed" the fix is in the test kernel -92. I tried it but it seems to have the same problem as before - when used with clocksource=pit, it hangs on bootup. Wonder if some of you can test this

[PATCH 5/6] xen, tools: calculate nr_cpus via num_online_cpus
Once Xen calculates nr_nodes properly, all nr_cpu calculations based on nr_nodes * sockets_per_node * cores_per_socket * threads_per_core are broken. The easy fix is to replace those calculations with a new field, nr_cpus in physinfo which is calculated by num_online_cpus(). This patch does so and attempts to change all users over to nr_cpus field in physinfo. This patch touches

Boot fails unless "noacpi" option is present.
Hello, I am using Xen 3.2.1 and I cannot boot it on my machine unless I use the noacpi option. As far as I know noacpi option is incompatible with SMP, so I must not use it, because my machine is SMP. I am describing the problem in more detail below. If you could point me in the right direction, I''d greatly appreciate it. I downloaded Xen 3.2.1 official source distribution tarball from

Installing 4.4 - problem on 386
I tried installing with several options (noacpi noapm; noprobe; noprobe skipddc noacpi noapm nodma). Always I get the same error. BUT this is not in fac a CentOS problem at all, because I get the same error always when I boot from hd (Fedora Core), IF there is a CD in the CD-ROM drive. (I tried with CentOS 1/4, CentOS 2/4 and a HP printer software CD.) It must be something with the CD drive!

Fwd: Re: Dotlock dovecot-uidlist errors / NFS / High Load
Stan, Thanks for the reply. In our case we have actually already done most of the work you suggested to no avail. We had rebuilt two new ntp servers that sync against two stratum 1 sources, and all our nfs clients, regardless of using dovecot, sync to those two machines. You bring up the difference between bare metal and hypervisor, and we are running these machines on vmware 4.0. All the

8139 dropping packets
I have a CentOS 5.8 box that is dropping packets (just from ping). The network is 8139 RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ Rev 10 Adding the parameters "pci=noacpi acpi=off " has helped but it still happens. Is there something else that helps the network not drop packets? Thanks, jerry

cpufreq and suspend
With my OQO, I get the following message when I try to suspend: cpufreq: suspend failed to assert current frequency is what timing core thinks it is. I see in /var/log/messages: kernel: acpi-cpufreq: CPU0 - ACPI performance management activated There are a number of apps and such dedicated to 'cpufreq' on the system. I have done a bit of searching and have not figured out what to do
