Hmm, don't you just love changing terminology! I've been using HSM systems at work since '99. BTW, DMAPI is the Data Management API which was a common(ish) extension used by amongst others SGI and IBM. Back to lvmcache. It looks interesting. I'd earlier dismissed LVM since it is block orientated, not file orientated. Probably because my mental image is of files migrating to

I think there may be some confusion here. By HSM I was referring to Hierarchical Storage Management, whereby there are multiple levels of storage (fast+expensive <-> slow+cheap) and files migrate up or down. Originally it was used to keep data on tape with the metadata residing on disk though it has been expanded to allow a SAS/SATA hierarchy. Quite where PKI comes in I'm not sure,

Purely from interest, is there any current FOSS implementation of HSM? I note that XFS has dropped support for DMAPI, have other filesystems? HSM also stands for "Hardware security module" Maybe lvmcache would be interesting for you? HSM is more popularly known as "tiering". sam-fs on zfs-pool
Hi list, I''ve did some tests and run into a very strange situation.. I created a zvol using "zfs create -V" and initialize an sam-filesystem on this zvol. After that I restored some testdata using a dump from another system. So far so good. After some big troubles I found out that releasing files in the sam-filesystem doesn''t create space on the underlying zvol.

samba GPFS and HSM?
Hi - I was wondering if any of you may be able to point me in the right direction. I am in the process of designing a fairly large fileserver solution in an MS Active directory environment. I have setup and tested ctdb samba, however, after several discussions with a couple of my colleagues, i am now considering a more vanilla flavour of samba. The key features the solution requires are: •

Dovecot HSM
Hi. I'm looking for a tutorial/how-to for a HSM (Hierarchical /Storage/ Management). keeping old messages for a user in a cheap storage and recent messages in a faster one. I see on dovecot2 wiki an alternative for hsm as "Alternate storage", but I don't now if it's a good solution for me. The expected result is a faster imap/pop access for new messages on a

Setting (exposing) FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE for a share
Hi all, Back in 2002 I opened a discussion on the samba-technical mailing list regarding the WinNT FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE ( http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2002-April/020969.html). Meanwhile some FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE handling was implemented in the 'trunk' Samba. Currently (Samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.4) provides the 'dmapi support' option for representing the

ZFS Usage in Warehousing (lengthy intro)
Dear all, we''re currently looking forward to restructure our hardware environment for our datawarehousing product/suite/solution/whatever. We''re currently running the database side on various SF V440''s attached via dual FC to our SAN backend (EMC DMX3) with UFS. The storage system is (obviously in a SAN) shared between many systems. Performance is mediocre in terms

Enable XAT_OFFLINE extended attribute in Samba
My goal is to use the Offline file attribute of Windows when sharing with Samba: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.io.fileattributes?redirectedfrom=MSDN&view=netframework-4.7.2 It works when I share ZFS filesystem using the native ZFS CIFS sharing, but it fails when I share the same ZFS with Samba, that is the Offline files are not showed in Windows Client Il 3/4/2019

ZFS layout on hardware RAID-5?
Greetings, I followed closely the thread "ZFS and Storage", and other discussions about using ZFS on hardware RAID arrays, since we are deploying ZFS in a similar situation here. I''m sure I''m oversimplifying, but the consensus for general filesystem-type storage needs, as I''ve read it, tends toward doing ZFS RAID-Z (or RAID-Z2) on LUNS consisting of hardware

Customer questions
A few questions: 1. How does ZFS compare to Luster? 2. Is ZFS compatible with Veritas Netbackup Suite? 3. Does ZFS support bare metal restore (BMR)? Pointers welcome!! dmapi doesn't work on aix; possible fix included
I'm running samba 3.0.23c on aix 5.3 TL4. I'm using Tivoli HSM 5.3.4.0 on a JFS2 filesystem. Samba compiled fine, and I set "dmapi support = yes" in smb.conf, but samba wouldn't recognize offline files ("migrated files" in tsm terminology). After setting a higher log level I think I've tracked down the problem. The patch is at the bottom of this email.

statvfs change
An issue was found with the netBeans installer where the installation was failing on a large ZFS filesystem. This resulted in CR 6560644 (zfs statvfs f_frsize needs work). The issue is that large filesystems can cause EOVERFLOW on statvfs() calls. This behavior is documented in the statvfs(2) man page, but I think we can do better. The problem was initially reported against ZFS, and my first fix

understanding zfs/thunoer "bottlenecks"?
Currently I''m trying to figure out the best zfs layout for a thumper wrt. to read AND write performance. I did some simple mkfile 512G tests and found out, that per average ~ 500 MB/s seems to be the maximum on can reach (tried initial default setup, all 46 HDDs as R0, etc.). According to http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/ArchitectureWP_062806.pdf I would
