PHP probes
Hi all,
I remember at OSCON 2005 there was talk of adding DTrace probes
to PHP (in fact, I have a photo of Bryan and Wes working on it!).
Did they ever get into the upstream branch, ''cause I don''t recall
seeing a --enable-dtrace (or similar) configuration option when
I recently built PHP 5.2.1. If not, is there an ETA?
TIA,

Solaris 8/9 branded zones on ZFS root?
Hi all,
I have a situation where I need to consolidate a few servers running
Solaris 9 and 8. If the application doesn''t run natively on Solaris
10 or Nevada, I was thinking of using Solars 9 or 8 branded zones.
My intent would be for the global zone to use ZFS boot/root; would I
be correct in thinking that this will be OK for the branded zones?
That is, they don''t care about

Preferred backup s/w
Hi all,
What is the current preferred method for backing up ZFS data pools,
preferably using free ($0.00) software, and assuming that access to
individual files (a la ufsbackup/ufsrestore) is required?
TIA,

Renaming a pool?
Hi all,
I have a pool called tank/home/foo and I want to rename it to
tank/home/bar. What''s the best way to do this (the zfs and
zpool man pages don''t have a "rename" option)?
One way I can think of is to create a clone of tank/home/foo
called tank/home/bar, and then destroy the former. Is that
the best (or even only) way?
TIA,

External SATA drive enclosures + ZFS?
Hi all,
Space is starting to get a bit tight here, so I''m looking at adding
a couple of TB to my home server. I''m considering external USB or
FireWire attached drive enclosures. Cost is a real issue, but I also
want the data to be managed by ZFS--so enclosures without a JBOD option
have been disgarded (i.e., I don''t want to use any internal HW RAID
controllers).

ZFS and Linux
Hello,
I believe that ZFS and it''s concepts is truly revolutionary to the
point that I no longer see any OS as modern if it does not have
comparable storage functionality. Therefore I think that file
system/disk manager with similar qualities should be written for Linux.
Does Sun have plans to dual license ZFS as GPL so it can be ported to
native Linux?
If not, is it legal to write

ZFS questions
I will have a file system in a SAN using ZFS. Can someone answer my
questions?
1. Can I create ZFS volumes on a ZFS file system from one server,
attach the file system read-write to a different server (to load data),
then detach the file system from that server and attach the file system
read-only to multiple other servers?
2. Can I expand on the fly a ZFS volume within a file

ZFS for Linux (NO LISCENCE talk, please)
Hello. I''m a nobody.
I use Linux. I have a hard-drive. I want the best / sexiest / what ever
fs for my hard-drive, as it isn''t one of those flashy flash drives,
which I presume don''t need an fs (???).
I was THRILLED that the ZFS for Linux thread started. And, I was equally
horrified (and sufficiently annoyed that I am starting this new thread) when
it degraded in to

linux networking "falls asleep"
I have an issue on my gentoo xen server. If i create linux domU''s,
regardless of whether they are HVM or PV, my networking on the domU
eventually "falls asleep". If i log into the domU using the VFB or xm
console, then utilize the network in some manner (i.e. ping) the network
jumps right up and is working. This happens on fedora, ubuntu, and
ipcop (2.4 kernel)

network falls asleep on guest
Hi all,
I have a Debian Lenny domU running on an Etch dom0 (xm info output
below). It seems that the domU network falls asleep after some time.
After some activity, either trying to do something like a ping or dig
from within the domU or enough client attempts to connect to a samba
share, it comes back up. That wouldn''t be terrible, except that the
delays in reconnecting to the samba

Ways to speed up ''zpool import''?
We''re planning to build a ZFS-based Solaris NFS fileserver environment
with the backend storage being iSCSI-based, in part because of the
possibilities for failover. In exploring things in our test environment,
I have noticed that ''zpool import'' takes a fairly long time; about
35 to 45 seconds per pool. A pool import time this slow obviously
has implications for how fast

Mongrels 1.0.1 falling asleep w/ Rails 1.2
I''m a bit surprised I can''t find anything about this in the mailing
list archives. Basically since Mongrel 1.0.1 I''ve had Mongrels fall
asleep without any real cause. A deep sleep, actually more like a
coma. The mongrel in question (I''m using a cluster of three) can not
be revived. A cluster::stop, then cluster::start is nessesary.
A ::restart would not

Psssst. The US is asleep - let's talk intern ationalization !!!
And let's also spell things properly! Like 'internationalisation' ...'Weasels have got into your phone system' instead of 'gotten into your phone system...'
And 'please press the hash key..' instead of 'pound key'
There should probably be en_uk, en_us, en_ca, en_za, en_nz, en_oz, en_ie and en_in etc to allow each English-speaking country to localise

After spending a lot of time saying numbers and dates, the Asterisk I18N project now targets
voicemail. The voicemail prompts are very much based on english language syntax, which works
for some languages and doesn't work for a lot of languages.

Big JBOD: what would you do?
ZFS fans,
I''m preparing some analyses on RAS for large JBOD systems such as
the Sun Fire X4500 (aka Thumper). Since there are zillions of possible
permutations, I need to limit the analyses to some common or desirable
scenarios. Naturally, I''d like your opinions. I''ve already got a few
scenarios in analysis, and I don''t want to spoil the brain storming, so
