puppet: 3.1.1 -> 3.2.1 load increase
Hi,
I recently updated from puppet 3.1.1 to 3.2.1 and noticed quite a bit of
increased load on the puppetmaster machine. I''m using
the Apache/passenger/rack way of puppetmastering.
Main symptom is: higher load on puppetmaster machine (8 cores):
- 3.1.1: around 4
- 3.2.1: around 9-10
Any idea why there''s more load on the machine with 3.2.1?

simulating directio on zfs?
I had to let this go and get on with testing DB2 on Solaris. I had to
abandon zfs on local discs in x64 Solaris 10 5/08.
The situation was that:
* DB2 buffer pools occupied up to 90% of 32GB RAM on each host
* DB2 cached the entire database in its buffer pools
o having the file system repeat this was not helpful
* running high-load DB2 tests for 2 weeks showed 100%

What kind of system is that? How much memory is installed?
I''m able to hang an Ultra 60 with 256 MByte of main memory,
simply by writing big files to a ZFS filesystem. The problem
happens with both Solaris 10 6/2006 and Solaris

Sieve problem. Timo, is this mbox file size limitation hard coded? If so, why?
I would not have expected this upon implementing sieve. And I really need
to get around this limitation. LDA has no problem writing to these large
mbox files. Why does sieve have a problem with them? This is very odd.

Resliver making the system unresponsive
This must be resliver day :)
I just had a drive failure. The hot spare kicked in, and access to the pool over NFS was effectively zero for about 45 minutes. Currently the pool is still reslivering, but for some reason I can access the file system now.
Resliver speed has been beaten to death I know, but is there a way to avoid this? For example, is more enterprisy hardware less susceptible to

simulating directio on zfs?
The big problem that I have with non-directio is that buffering delays program execution. When reading/writing files that are many times larger than RAM without directio, it is very apparent that system response drops through the floor- it can take several minutes for an ssh login to prompt for a password. This is true both for UFS and ZFS.
Repeat the exercise with directio on UFS and there is no

ZFS bechmarks w/8 disk raid - Quirky results, any thoughts?
Hi All,
I''ve just built an 8 disk zfs storage box, and I''m in the testing phase before I put it into production. I''ve run into some unusual results, and I was hoping the community could offer some suggestions. I''ve bascially made the switch to Solaris on the promises of ZFS alone (yes I''m that excited about it!), so naturally I''m looking

Troubleshooting ZFS performance with SIL3124 cards
Hi!
I have a problem with ZFS and most likely the SATA PCI-X controllers.
I run
opensolaris 2008.11 snv_98 and my hardware is Sun Netra x4200 M2 with
3 SIL3124 PCI-X with 4 eSATA ports each connected to 3 1U diskchassis
which each hold 4 SATA disks manufactured by Seagate model ES.2
(500 and 750) for a total of 12 disks. Every disk has its own eSATA
cable
connected to the ports on the PCI-X

unaccounted for daily growth in ZFS disk space usage
We finally flipped the switch on one of our ZFS-based servers, with
approximately 1TB of 2.8TB (3 stripes of 950MB or so, each of which is
a RAID5 volume on the adaptec card). We have snapshots every 4 hours
for the first few days. If you add up the snapshot references it
appears somewhat high versus daily use (mostly mail boxes, spam, etc
changing), but say an aggregate of no more than 400+MB a

Puppet installation and observations
Greeting Puppeteers,
( I sent this from the wrong address so it may be a duplicate post
after moderation )
I recently discovered puppet from the debian administration site and
thought I might install it after BASHING my head against cfengine the
last 3 times I tried to install it.
I installed puppetmaster on my primary server and dropped puppet on a
couple of xen virtuals.
It worked

slog tests on read throughput exhaustion (NFS)
I have historically noticed that in ZFS, when ever there is a heavy
writer to a pool via NFS, the reads can held back (basically paused).
An example is a RAID10 pool of 6 disks, whereby a directory of files
including some large 100+MB in size being written can cause other
clients over NFS to pause for seconds (5-30 or so). This on B70 bits.
I''ve gotten used to this behavior over NFS, but

xen, fc4, bridging, iptables and conntrack problem
Hi,
I''m testing out Xen on FC4. I''m using bridging for networking, as
well as iptables to firewall, configured with the standard Fedora
''system-config-security-level'' tool. However I have really strange
problem with conntrack not seeming to catch outbound connections.
This prevents outbound connections working from dom0. Connections

Issues with exposing USB serial dongle to guest VM
Hi.
I have Centos 7 (updated) running as my host, and I?m using Qemu and KVM, version 2.0.0 and 2.6.0.
I have a Trendnet TU-S9 USB serial dongle attached to the host, which uses the Prolific 2303 chipset.
I blacklisted the pl2303 driver so the host doesn?t grab the device, and want to expose it to the guest.
On the client, I see 2 USB hubs (3.0 and 2.0), and I see 2 USB endpoints (even though
