ActiveRecord in Rails 2.1.0 misbehaving for Aggregate Attr.
I am not sure if this is a bug in ActiveRecord or is this the intended behavior. If it is then it does not make sense to me. In a nutshell: If you change an aggregate object attribute created via composed_of method (see Agile Web Development - Second Edition Chapter 17 page 313 onwards) and then save the model, the change to the model (composite attribute specifically) will not be saved UNLESS

Unexplainable failure...at least for me
I have an address model with country_id and province_id fields There is also a full_address method that returns an address that is in a format that the google maps api will be able to return a long-lat coords. Within the full_address method there is a call to obtain the province/state and country name. --------- def full_address ... full_address = [city, self.province.name,

ActionMailer calling shared methods
I''m trying to use a shared method from an ActionMailer template. The method was originally in ApplicationHelper, but I''ve also tried it in the base controller (application.rb), with and without helper_method. In all cases, I get an error undefined method `wgg_replace_crlf'' for #<ActionView::Base:0x324b230> Here is the relevant block of code from the email

One to Many example... please!
Hi, I am pulling my hair out trying to work out how to put together what should be a simple app in rails. The app is to CV''s so I have a table of CV''s and each CV can have multiple skills. Skills are in a 2nd table below; CREATE TABLE cvs( id INT not null AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, first_name VARCHAR(30) not null, family_name VARCHAR(30) not null, email

Model Validation - with a twist
I''m stuck in a catch-22 type problem. I have an insert form for a table that uses the validation in the model. i.e. When you click submit on the form and haven''t filled in the required fields then you get the nice rails error messages saying "field can not be blank". This works fine until I introduce some more logic. What I''m trying to do is to validate

Ruby EE: Problem with BigDecimal
I have a strange problem with my setup of Passenger and Ruby Enterprise Edition. Sometimes the loading of BigDecimals from the database and session fails (silently) and the variable containing the BigDecimal is just empty. I cannot pinpoint where/when/how it happens, and it IS only periodic. I am using the newest versions of both Passenger and REE - I have even tried to run with latest commit

cucumber - when to stub/mock
I''m just curious about this, since my solution involved stubbing a call to GeoIp. Is there a good rule of thumb for when you make exceptions to the ''no stubbing'' philosophy of Cucumber? My step was: "Given I am accessing the site from Japan," but I can think of other situations - mostly when interacting with web services, that I''d probably

Decimals are being converted to Bigdecimals!!!!!
Hi all, I''m working on a financial app, and have set up some columns in my tables as decimals with precision => 8 and scale => 2. My migration looks like: change_column :lineitems, :price, :decimal, :precision => 8, :scale => 2 change_column :payments, :amount, :decimal, :precision => 8, :scale => 2 I''ve run the migration and restarted the server. Mapping to BigDecimals instead of Floats
Hi everyone, I''m new to Rails and Ruby, and have been working my way through the Pickaxe and Agile Rails books for the last week or so. With a background in payroll apps I found that the default ActiveRecord mapping of decimal columns to float variables really bothered me! Financial calcs need high levels of accuracy and floats just don''t give you that. I know there are a bunch

Float -> BigDecimal
So, I''m personally cool with this change (patch from #5454, applied in [4596]), and I''ll make it work for Oracle tomorrow. But just wondering if folks considered the performance impact of the change? From a simple test it seems that BigDecimal math is about twice as slow as using Floats.
