Let''s say you are paranoid and have built a pool with 40+ disks in a Thumper. Is there a way to set metadata copies=3 manually? After having built RAIDZ2 sets with 7-9 disks and then pooled these together, it just seems like a little bit of extra insurance to increase metadata copies. The cache on the HW raid helps, and the CPU load is less... but the solution costs more and you _might_ not need the performance of the HW RAID.
