Cloning a ZFS compact flash card
I need some help please. I am currently using a compact flash as the boot drive (ZFS) on a thumper. I want to create a clone of it to a file and restore it to a new CF card on another thumper. Unfortunately, an exact make, model and size of the CF has a few less cylinders so a straight dd of the slice2 does not work. Now I have to navigate the intricacies of the trying to clone rpool etc, which

Using ZFS for replication
Fairly new to ZFS. I am looking to replicate data between two thumper boxes. Found quite a few articles about using zfs incremental snapshot send/receive. Just a cheeky question to see if anyone has anything working in a live environment and are happy to share the scripts, save me reinventing the wheel. thanks in advance. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

The ZFS Read / Write roundabout
Hey all - Was playing a little with zfs today and noticed that when I was untarring a 2.5gb archive both from and onto the same spindle in my laptop, I noticed that the bytes red and written over time was seesawing between approximately 23MB/s and 0MB/s. It seemed like we read and read and read till we were all full up, then wrote until we were empty, and so the cycle went. Now: as it happens,

How to set ZFS metadata copies=3?
Let''s say you are paranoid and have built a pool with 40+ disks in a Thumper. Is there a way to set metadata copies=3 manually? After having built RAIDZ2 sets with 7-9 disks and then pooled these together, it just seems like a little bit of extra insurance to increase metadata copies. I don''t see a need for extra data copies which is currently the only trigger I see for that.

raidz "ZFS Best Practices" wiki inconsistency
<http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#RAID-Z_Configuration_Requirements_and_Recommendations> says that the number of disks in a RAIDZ should be (N+P) with N = {2,4,8} and P = {1,2}. But if you go down the page just a little further to the thumper configuration examples, none of the 3 examples follow this recommendation! I will have 10 disks to put into a

3510 JBOD ZFS vs 3510 HW RAID
Hi there Is it fair to compare the 2 solutions using Solaris 10 U2 and a commercial database (SAP SD scenario). The cache on the HW raid helps, and the CPU load is less... but the solution costs more and you _might_ not need the performance of the HW RAID. Has anybody with access to these units done a benchmark comparing the performance (and with the pricelist in hand) came to a conclusion.

ZFS Space Map optimalization
I have a huge problem with space maps on thumper. Space maps takes over 3GB and write operations generates massive read operations. Before every spa sync phase zfs reads space maps from disk. I decided to turn on compression for pool ( only for pool, not filesystems ) and it helps. Now space maps, intent log, spa history are compressed. Not I''m thinking about disabling checksums. All

ZFS Raidz2 problem, detached drive
I have an X4500 thumper box with 48x 500gb drives setup in a a pool and split into raidz2 sets of 8 - 10 drives within the single pool. I had a failed disk with i cfgadm unconfigured and replaced no problem, but it wasn''t recognised as a Sun drive in Format and unbeknown to me someone else logged in remotely at the time and issued a zpool replace.... I corrected the system/drive

Compatibility of Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723030ALA640 with ZFS
Greetings, Quick question: I am about to acquire some disks for use with ZFS (currently using zfs-fuse v0.7.0). I''m aware of some 4k alignment issues with Western Digital advanced format disks. As far as I can tell, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (HDS723030ALA640) uses 512B sectors and so I presume does not suffer from such issues (because it doesn''t lie about the physical layout

LVM and ZFS
I''m curious about if there are any potential problems with using LVM metadevices as ZFS zpool targets. I have a couple of situations where using a device directly by ZFS causes errors on the console about "Bus and lots of "stalled" I/O. But as soon as I wrap that device inside an LVM metadevice and then use it in the ZFS zpool things work perfectly fine and smoothly (no

understanding zfs/thunoer "bottlenecks"?
Currently I''m trying to figure out the best zfs layout for a thumper wrt. to read AND write performance. I did some simple mkfile 512G tests and found out, that per average ~ 500 MB/s seems to be the maximum on can reach (tried initial default setup, all 46 HDDs as R0, etc.). According to http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/ArchitectureWP_062806.pdf I would

ZFS works in waves
A little back story: I have a Norco DS-1220, a 12 bay SATA box, it is connected to eSATA (SiI3124) via PCI-X two drives are straight connections, then the other two ports go to 5x multipliers within the box. My needs/hopes for this was using 12 500GB drives and ZFS make a very large & simple data dump spot on my network for other servers to rsync to daily & use zfs snapshots for

login fails if smbusers is used to map domain admin to root.
Hi, i am trying to map the domain administrator to root using the smbusers file in order to be able to set file permissions from windows. Unfortunately, while the map itself seem to succeed, the logins fails. If i remove the relevant line in smbusers, login succeed but i lack superuser privileges. Here is log.smbd while trying to map administrator to root [2008/07/09 12:50:42, 4]

MDAC not installing
MDAC is proving to be a pain for me to install. I have so far had nothing but failure. Here is a breakdown of what I'm working from. I am using Ubuntu Linux (Hoary 5.04) and the 20050725 binary install from the instructions here: http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb Wine installs fine and I can get some core software installed w/o a hitch. I am using the script from here to get IE6,
