Some questions I had while testing ZFS.
I''m looking at bringing up a new Solaris 10 based file server running off an older UltraSPARC-IIi 360MHz with 512mb ram. I''ve brought up the 11/06 release from scratch no patches installed at this time. I have 4 externally attached 36gb scsi devices off the hosts systems scsi bus. After setting up a few different zpool scenarios with mirrors, raidz, raidz2 to familiarize

NOTICE: spa_import_rootpool: error 5
IHAC Who has an x4500(x86 box) who has a zfs root filesystem. They installed patches today, the latest solaris 10 x86 recommended patch cluster and the patching seemed to complete successfully. Then when they tried to reboot the box the machine would not boot? They get the following error NOTICE: spa_import_rootpool: error 5, Inc. All rights reserved. Cannot mount root on /pci at

ZFS and Caching - write() syscall with O_SYNC
IHAC using ZFS in production, and he''s opening up some files with the O_SYNC flag. This affects subsequent write()''s by providing synchronized I/O file integrity completion. That is, each write(2) will wait for both the file data and file status to be physically updated. Because of this, he''s seeing some delays on the file write()''s. This is verified with

cvs bulid breaks on slackware
cvs code from this morning (about 9am PST) breaks on slackware 7.1 w/ gcc 2.95.2.1 with an undefined reference to session_setup_sia in session.o. this seems to be the culprit here: #ifdef HAVE_OSF_SIA #else /* HAVE_OSF_SIA */ session_setup_sia(pw->pw_name, ttyname); since i have no idea what that's trying to accomplish (and seems to be a bit backwards to me from looking

tracing blocks behind I/O
Hi, I know how to trace the number of bytes read/written by a program by summing the argument of that read/write syscall. However, the way the OS services read/write calls is in blocks. I wonder if it''s possible to trace the actual number of blocks read/written caused by the syscalls? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All Some background first I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines 1. A windows 2000 client 2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client 3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on the SGI. When users want to test their application software they ssh from their windows client into

Samba replacing NFS
Hi, I have a number of web servers that mount their /htdocs (and /log and /cgi-bin) directories from a large file server. I am currently using NFS for this. The web servers are Linux, the file server a Sun E450. NFS seems dreadfully slow, and I keep reading about how it doesn't do file locking. Is there a good reason not to simply use samba, and share the volumes with samba from the Sun, and

performance issue!!
we have an SUN E450 server with soalris 2.6 and 512mb RAM running samba. we have a network and all the machines are connect through a switch. there are about 40 users who simultaneously use the server running samba for file service. The set up is like this. there is an application on the server which is shared and all the users have mapped their drive letter to that share. this application when

IO probes and forcedirectio
Hi, I''m working on some performance analysis with our database and it seems that when the file system (UFS) is mounted with forcedirectio, the IO probe are not triggered when an I/O event occurs. Could you confirm that ? If so, why ? Seb -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

performance problems with rc10 and solaris 10
Hi, i have 2 dovecot imap server running on solaris 10 The primary server with dovecot 1.0.alpha4 is running with best performance on Sun Sparc E4k5 with 8x 450MHz The secondary with rc10 has ugly performanceproblems on Sun E450 wth 4x 450MHz. Every new imap process takes permanent 25% cpu usage List the folder and fetch message are both slowy! Both servers are configred with ldap backend

Unsolicited oplock breaks
Dear All, we've been having some intermittent problems with students who's home directories are on a Sun E450 running Samba 2.0.6. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is caused by the server, but may be the network. However, I've had a look at the log.smb file and I'm seeing some error messages that I've not come across before: [2001/02/23 18:20:40, 0]

Load balancing Samba print servers on Solaris 8...is is possible?
I'll try to keep this short, but feel free to ask for more info if needed. Basically, we were given two Sun V480 servers and told to make high availability windows print servers to replace our current config of two windows 2000 clusters (4 Windows 2000 server nodes, 2 in each cluster, configured "active/active"). Solaris 8 was installed (and preferred over Solaris 9 in our

Severe problem with Samba
Dear All, we are experiencing severe problems with Samba 2.2.0 (with quota support) running on a dual processor (400MHz) Sun E450 running Solaris 2.7. This is used as a central file server for student diskspace, accessed by approx 1200 PCs running NT 4. Up until recently we experienced some, what we assume to be, loading issues with connections during the middle of the day being slow.

Samba 3 use of /etc/passwd /etc/shadow
We've been running Samba2.2.x and relying on the underlying Solaris user authentication (/etc/passwd /etc/shadow). For historical reasons, we've allowed plaintext passwords. Now as we've upgraded to Samba 3.0.3. we would like to continue this method of authentication (at least until we can implement ldap). The docs are sketchy at best (you can use plaintext authentication, etc.), but

Samba 3.x performance bug?
Hello All, IHAC who is experiencing a strange samba problem, the problems started when they wanted to migrate a existing Samba installation onto a Sun Cluster node. They are running Sun Cluster 3.x on a 6800 with 12 CPUs, the operating environment is Solaris 8. Its a quite annoying problem, since the Samba instances runs nicely on other Solaris 8 boxes, but on this cluster node it runs very

OCFS2 CLUSTER HANG
Hi, IHAC with an OCFS2 1.4 2-node cluster in RedHat 5.3 x86-64. Basically for explanation simplicity the software uses the cluster for writing in a log file up to 500Mb size, among other things (file read, etc) Last monday there was a problem somewhere (software is a two-node application server) that caused the software to hang, and it seems both application servers was waiting each other for

MAX_LUNS SIZE LIMIT ON RHEL 3.0 and 4.0
Dear List Users- IHAC planning storage layout and is looking for the following MAX_LUNS size limit on RHEL 3.0 and 4.0. Details are below. Customer database size is estimated to grow to 5 TB and worries that they will not be able to present enough devices to the system if used with EMC powerpath and RHEL 3.0 max_lun limitations. I have advised on using OCFS or ASM as this is a 10g Database
